Necessary to have Toslink for Apple TV?

I'm planning to get the 2nd Gen Apple TV but I came across something called the Toslink cable and did some reading online though but ain't sure is it necessary to have for Apple TV? Any advise? Will it affect the sound output as in no sound? Thanks

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

What's receiver? Can I have it directly to tv via hdmi?

Toslink gives separate audio out over optical fibre for people who connect AppleTV via HDMI to the TV rather than to an AV amp/receiver - they can run HDMI to the TV and have sound/audio there, but can also run optical to the hi-fi/surround system to get better stereo or surround sound.

If you have an amp/reciever capable of HDMI input you probably don't need optical, but older ones won't have it.
