iPad 2 iMovie

Is there a way to get the video shot on an iPhone 4 to the camera roll on the iPad 2 to use in iMovie, besides the camera connection kit? Syncing through iTunes through Photos only brings pics, not video, and syncing through iTunes through Video brings them to the iPad, but they do not show up in iMovie. Thanks!

I just noticed that there is was an imovie update released yesterday....which should help with getting videos into imovie. Will give it a try tonight - i don't know if talking tom cat movies will work or just videos imported from external cameras...

What's New In Version 1.2.2

This update addresses minor issues and expands support for videos imported from external cameras.

Apparently not. I updated to IOS 5 and I Have the latest version of imovie. I am able to import videos to camera roll just fine however they will NOT work in imovie. My videos taken with my camera are h264 HD. I have tried 720 and 1080. I have tried various resolutions but so far none of them work. Accurate testing of this issue would require someone to take a camera that shoots h264, shoot some video and import it to camera roll then try using it in imovie. Many have suggested this works.( iphone does not count here) If that is true then the question is what format do the vidoes have to be in? Also there is a lot of talk about codec (h264) but no mention of container. I guess the way to be sure it work is to find out exactly what the Ipad uses when creating videos and find a camera that will do exactly that. Then again I am not so sure that is a fix in that you still have to jump through hoops to get the video imported. Odd how most other apple software and hardware "just works" and this does not. So far nothing has worked for me. The only thing I can do is use video I shoot with the ipad. I have access to several cameras and other applications so I plan to try testing some more a little later today.

this morning i did the following tests with success:

1) i am using an olympus digital camera that i bought several years ago and took a movie and used the camera connection kit to download the movie directly to my ipad - it works!

2) i grabbed a previous movie file taken with the same camera (copied from my pc) - added it to itunes, then chose under advanced setting to convert it to ipod then copied that file from itunes into a library that i have setup for itunes to sync with the ipod - synced it to my ipad and it also works. I had to do all of this because mov files from my computer will not sync to my computer...even though these are the same type of files that when synced directly from the camera work just fine.

I have updated my iPad 2 to iOS 5 and can confirm that since this I can now take movies from my Panasonic Lumix TZ7 recorded in motion Jpg (mov) format HD into iMovies directly via the camera connection kit, previously I had to go through an extra stage to place the movie onto the camera roll to allow iMovie to recognise it. The movies are not recognised if they are recorded in the cameras AVCHD format.

Ok After some testing this afternoon. I can confirm that if I use the camera connection kit videos from my Cannon power shot SD3500 IS will transfer and can be used in imovie. I can not however transfer movies made with this same camera from my MacBook Pro into camera roll and get that to work. The vidoes will transfer from my mac and play on the Ipad, I just can't get them into camera roll or imovie. Much better, not perfect but no major disaster either. I can simply import movie files directly to Ipad which is easier anyway and then just leave them on the camera for later import if needed. So all in all an improvment. I have a few other cameras I will test with later tonight.......... Be nice if folks could post what cameras work and what format they are using.

Thanks guys.

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou. I had given up hope of ever seeing my holiday video from France shot on my Sony compact. I was also sick of trying 'Handbrake' etc as a workaround. But now iOS 5 has allowed me to import and edit my video with iMovie on my iPad2 from a non Apple source. Brilliant. Love these forums and you and all others who helped.

I have a Canon 60d dslr which can shoot 1080p 25fps video, since updating to ios 5 I am now able to play these videos directly on my ipad 2 when importing via the camera conection kit (videos imported, but wouldn't play before ios 5 update). Problem is if I import the video into my aperture library and then sync the aperture library back to my ipad the video does not show up even thou I have the import video check boxed ticked.

I really want to love my ipad - help me PLEASE - i have video in mp4 format. I want to edit it in my newly purchased Imovie app.

1) How do I get the 1/2 GB files on the Ipad. Dropbox lets me view them only,

2) I think Ive read enough of this thread to get that the files have to be in exactly the right format for the program. If I can just get the files on there. Icloud?

Thanks!

Even more progress but not there yet. I added the videos to my iTunes on my laptop running windows 7. I connected to the shared library on the laptop, and low and behold, there are my videos for the video player on the ipad2. Cool! Now, syncing....*** does that mean and where is that set up?

And btw, when I launch iMovie it does not offer my videos as an option to open. The videos have not made their way into the camera roll, that probably why.......how do I get them into the camera roll?

I'll try one more time.

Do not import into the Movies or TV Shows tab/area of iTunes.

go to the photos tab,

and sync the videos into the photos app on the iPad.

They will not appear in the camera roll.

You will create a new album for them to go into.

If you can play the video in the photos app (not movies, or video app) then iMovie will see the video.
