iPad 2 iMovie

Is there a way to get the video shot on an iPhone 4 to the camera roll on the iPad 2 to use in iMovie, besides the camera connection kit? Syncing through iTunes through Photos only brings pics, not video, and syncing through iTunes through Video brings them to the iPad, but they do not show up in iMovie. Thanks!

This is really dissapointing. One of the main reasons I bought the ipad 2 was for imovie so I could make and share small videos of my daughter growing up with her grandparents. I researched the ipad 2 and imovie beforehand, and nowhere did I see mention that the app was limited to only videos taken on an iphone or ipad2. They should really make that clear somewhere noticeable

So rather than spending $20-$50 for a video editing program for your computer, you spent $700 so you could buy a $4.99 app that would do much less?

Do you have a Mac? You could use iMovie on that.

Surely you and Apple are smart enough to realize that some people heard about iMovie on the iPad and thought that it would be a perfect light mobile editing tool when they can't or don't want to use a computer. Maybe not.

I travel a lot and all I take is my ipad. I want to do some light movie editing. I need to get video source material from sources other than the iphone and ipad. I'm disappointed in Apple's initial offering. It has a lot of potential. The new ipad has the horsepower to convert videos to it's format locally. I'm hoping that Apple or a 3rd party will step up.

Thats one of the reasons why i purchased iMovie for my iPad 2 was the ability to edit videos on the go.. say if im on location and i need to quickly show a client something.. i can take my SD card and hook to iPad 2. then load into iMovie and upload very quickly.. atleast thats what i thought.. i believe if they made an update to itunes where it would automatically convert the video to a format that would be compatible with the iMovie app then that would be fine.. or when it imports from the camera kit it would convert them.. i didnt get any error when it imported the videos.. they play on the iPad.. just wont import into iMovie app.. strange.. hopefully apple will fix it.. i saw reeldirector on app store.. $1.99.. someone said it does ok.. but i wanted to use iMovie since its designed around the new iPad 2 ios..

+1 Also, Apple products are suppose to work effortlessly. Jobs made a big deal of imovie at Ipad 2s' launch. If you can't import videos from other sources then what is the point? Who has or would take fantastic "Hawaii" pics and video from their iphone or ipad 2? Also, if it did work without problems people would be more inclined to purchase a Mac laptop.

This poor ******* just purchased an Ipad 2 and has a Mac. He wants to edit videos on the road with his ipad 2 and he is having problems with the Ipad 2 and the camera connection kit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQWUzeG4qxo

If the person who made that YouTube video had done some some research about the video file format that the Sony camera makes... He would have found out that both the iPad 1&2 doesn't support the Sony AVCHD video format.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD

Supported video format for the iPad 1&2

Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

That's true but the problem is more like what iMovie on the iPad supports.

For example I converted a video to the exact 720p res that apple uses in h264. I put it in iphoto and transferred it to the ipad by using "include videos" in the sync.

The video shows up in the Photos app on the ipad and plays but will not show up in iMovie on the ipad.

William.. i did the same thing.. this is what i have tried.

1. camera kit - imported videos fine.. they play fine on ipad.. nothing in imovie
2. sync with itunes - they play fine on ipad - nothing in imovie
3. converted to 720p apple codec .mov and .mp4 compatible with ipad - nothing in imovie
4. put them in a picture folder and clicked 'include videos' on itunes.. they were imported but yet still cannot use in imovie..

so seems like a lot of people with the same problem. like someone said above.. im sure they had the ipad out there in the river filming or near the ocean running around with an ipad filming that video.. lol

I am also one who bought the ipad2 in hopes to be able to edit HD video from my Kodak Zi8 pocket HD camcorder. The ability to use the ipad2 to shoot video to me would be a 2nd choice if I didn't have a regular camcorder available. My kodak shoots in .MOV format and I thought it would work, but I guess not. Very disappointed and hope this will be addressed soon.

I have an iPad 1 and got iMovie to work on it. All my videos that I've shot with the iPhone 4 were imported via iPhoto and iTunes and I can select all of them in iMovie.

As I don't have an iPad 2 I can't try this out. Maybe for the iPad 2 all clips need to be in the Camera Roll, the same way they have to be if you want to edit them using iMovie on the iPhone.

I haven't tried any media that was shot on a different camera yet, but maybe converting them with Handbrake and then saving them to a photo album in iPhoto that you can sync to the iPad will work?

.MOV is not a format it is a video container.

I have not problems importing .mov videos that are properly formatted to play on the iPad and then edited in the iMovie app. I also have no problems importing the Flip Mino HD camera videos into the iPad using Apple Camera Connection Kit. These videos do import/work in the iMovie app on the iPad.
