The solution you described doesn't work anymore for Chrome version 59.0.3071.115. Google changed the location for the protocol handler settings. I found a solution here.
1. Close Chrome
2. Open "/Users/[my user name]/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Preferences" in a text editor.
3. Look for the line "macappstores":true , under "protocol_handler":
4. Change this line to "macappstores":false and save this file
5. Reopen Chrome and test a MAS link. Example here.
Hey,
this worked for me in CHROME since the launch of the Mac App Store.
Since a few days (maybe 2 weeks) it doesn't work anymore - in CHROME.
In Safari it still works.
I didn't change any settings in CHROME (how to open links etc.).
Maybe a CHROME update broke this?
I am surprise to hear feedback that it works or has worked because I have been under the impression that Chrome, like other third party browsers hasn't yet provided external protocol handler support for the Mac App Store. Wasn't it only recently that iTunes was able be to launched properly from Chrome?
Anyway, I use Chrome as a default browser too and would like to see a solution to this, I have posted the issue on the Google Help Forums: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=0487ff5040a0703c&hl=en and on Lifehacker: http://lifehacker.com/openthread/forum?comment=39148745 so if I get any feedback, I will fill you guys in.
Cheers
hey folks,
good news - at least for me here ;-)
with my current chrome version it works again - don't know what else might have changed.
12.0.742.100
anybody else who noticed it working again?
cheers, Tom
It would be helpful if you all understood the OP's explanation. He clicked on a link to open an apps page in the Mac App Store and was presented with this dialog box;
He must have selected Do Nothing and checked the box to remember this choice. Now when he clicks on one of those links in Chrome it remembers his previous choice and it Does Nothing, it will not open the page in the MAS. He would appreciate some help in canceling this previous decision so that he can now open these pages from Chrome.
So his question is, how does he reverse his previous descision? What setting or file must he edit to get this external protocol back?
I do not use Chrome, so I cannot help in solving his issue.
You can make Chrome the default browser in Preferences/Basics/Default browser in the Chrome browser.
Sorry for not answering your question juniorhernandez (got caught up replying to latest feedback and not the original intent)
Here you go:
* Close Chrome
* Open "/Users/[my user name]/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Local State" in a text editor.
* Look for the line "itms": true,
* Delete this line and Chrome will start to prompt you to open itunes links.
* Change the true to false and itunes links will open without prompting.

I can confirm ThomasFromMunich that v12 has fixed it - now it should work for everyone.
Unfortunately, Junior is not asking how to recover opening links to the iTunes Store! This is the Mac App Store forum.
Again, he has asked for help in recovering the ability to open links to the Mac App Store from Chrome.
Which I would guess is perhaps a similar routine, but editing a different item in that same file.
Perhaps it's like v1ct0r described
and just replace "itms" with "macappstore".
At least in my file this line is there with "false" which then seems to mean "handle externally"…
What do you think?
I tested this a bit and came up with this;
1. Close Chrome
2. Open "/Users/[my user name]/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Local State" in a text editor. TextEdit will do fine.
3. Look for the line "macappstore": true, under "protocol_handler":
4. Delete this line and Chrome will start to prompt you to open MAS links.
5. Change the true to false and MAS links will open without prompting.
6. Save the file and Quit the text editor.
