Reasons for 2-3 weeks shipping delay!

I was intrested in fiding out why the shipping in the USA was 2-3 weeks for the iPad 2, so I did abit research and emailed a few tech-sites for some confirmation.

Anyway MacRumours and ElectricPig got back in contact, the reason for the 2-3 week shipping delay is becuase USA was allocated so many units of the iPad 2 and these units were mostly for the retails stores Apple, Walmart, Best Buy etc etc, hence no online pre order until the 11th.

Intresting to know is that in a reply email I got, I was told that Apple did not want to make the mistake of repeating last years poor international delayed launch! Because there are rival tablets coming out very soon (PlayBook April) Apple do not want disgruntled customers going elsewhere.

Thus the reason for the 2-3 week delay is down to the international launch of the iPad 2

I have Ipad 1st gen, Iphone 1st gen Iphone 3g iPhone 3gs, iPhone 4 MacBook Pro Apple G5 x 2 32 GB Apple white 5th gen ipod classics and a whole array of apple stuff.

However I also have other tech stuff by Sony, Blackberry, Canon. I dont think you should just stick to one brand of product!

it is an American company, so Americans get it first. Anyway, what is the rush?? I'm in Canada and we'll get online access to the product on March 25th. When it gets here I'll use it. In the mean time, I can cruise the forums watching for problems and if there are any, wait until they have been corrected before I buy one.

You should know sylo, that you cannot be guided by the negative reports on this forum about problems with iPad 2. (even if yourself have some problem with any other product you own)
People come here to look for help when there is a problem and a lot of them are first time posters, who because of suffering some problem can easily be frustrated with their new product and even be critical.
However many thousands and thousands have no reason to come as the product works fine.
The forum members are here to help if they can, this is in most part the reason for these apple discussions being created.

I got in early with my online order because I won't wait in line for hours at a store to get it. My order was placed at 3:50am and at 4:20am I got my confirmation email telling me it will ship in 3 to 5 days and that's fine with me. I would also be upset if I tried to order online and got the 2 to 4 week time and now today it's 3 to 5 weeks. That's a little long for me and I would probably just not buy one at the 3 to 5 weeks and see what comes along from other companies. For me its a toy and not an important piece of equipment.

With all that said retail is all about supply and demand. They got the demand and I guess you can only make so many but you would think they could have been a little more prepared for the first day sales. It's like they announced the thing and then decided to make them. I never understood why they made us wait to order online. They could have taken those orders and given you a ship date after the release date and had a pretty good idea how many they would need to fill that part. I guess that's why they're such a successful company, because they know what they're doing even though we don't understand their thinking.

It's wonderful to have conspiracy theories, they are entertaining at least.

A counter idea though - perhaps, just perhaps, it is simple supply and demand, with demand far, far outstripping supply and production capacity? I know, a radical idea and very dull and uninteresting in comparison.

I'll await the "explanations" as to shipping delays after the international launch - it will be entertaining to see the twists and turns in the Apple global conspiracy threads.

Keep in mind that it's not just manufacturing, folks. Sure, parts and assembly are important factors and much of that takes place outside the US. But after the darn things are built, they have to be packaged, prepared for shipment and shipped. You think FedEx, UPS and international carriers are going to suddenly produce temporary staff and transportation just because Apple is launching a new product?

Add to that the fact that estimated first weekend sales were more than double that of the first iPad, I think Apple was about as prepared as it could have been. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been able to stick to the international launch date and decrease current ship times from 4-5 weeks back to 3-4 weeks.
