How can I delete e-mails only on the iPhone and not on Outlook in my desktop PC at work?

iPhone 4, iOS 4, iMac

Not possible. By design and intention, all server stored mailboxes with an IMAP account are kept synchronized with the server automatically with each email client used to access the account.

    Thank you Allan.
However, why with the previous smartphone (Blackberry Storm) I was able to only delete messages on the smartphone without deleting them on Outlook on my desktop? Am I missing something?
Is Blackberry working in a different way?
Don't they rely on IMAP too?
Sorry for the hassle but it is a real problem at work not to be able to delete message only on iPhone.
Is there any other way to do that?

    You're welcome.

Different from a Blackberry, the iPhone's Mail app communicates direct with the incoming mail server with each email account no different from accessing an email account with an email client on your computer such as with Outlook. The Blackberry doesn't. RIM provides a dedicated email delivery service for the Blackberry located in Canada that all email accounts accessed with a Blackberry are routed through. This provides some features that are not available when accessing an email account with an email client on your computer and with the iPhone's Mail app.

Apple can't change the design and nature of an IMAP account. Make use of server stored mailboxes to sort received messages by category. This will at least remove select messages from the account's Inbox mailbox on your iPhone without deleting the messages since this seems to be important on your iPhone.

    Hi Allan, again many thanks.
I will try to duplicate the mailbox or store messages by category.
    Keep well.

Did something change recently with gmail accounts then? I used to be able to delete gmail emails off my iPhone without deleting them off the server, so they would still be available to my PC.

Nothing has changed. Nothing can change in regards to the design and nature of an IMAP or POP account.

A Gmail account can be accessed as an IMAP or POP account with any email client, and now with the iPhone's Mail app a Gmail account can be accessed as an Exchange account.

The only way you could have been able to do this is by accessing your Gmail account as a POP account with the iPhone's Mail app.

    It was just a question...

But thanks for the snippy reply.

    Snippy?

Good grief. Not hardly. Wear your feelings on your sleeve much?
