Q: iOS 4.3 breaks Wireless N (802.11n) in 2.4 and 5 GHz bands on iPad, iphone4

It's not just in the 5ghz band as I first thought.

I put 4.3 back on things and did more tests..

4.3 prevents ANY iDevice , including the ATV2 from using 802.11n in any band.

Many ppl don't see this because their routers are in mixed mode. So for 5ghz ppl , the devices drop to 802.11a, and for 2.4ghz ppl, the devices drop to G.

I hate mixed mode on routers because it degrades performance(so I don't use it). So my 5ghz band is N only and my 2.4 is G only. So I noticed this right away. But once I set my 2.4ghz to n only mode , no idevice running 4.3 could connect to any band. nothing would touch it

This also is not a 40mhz vs 20 issue as my 5ghz was forced to 40 and the iPad and ATV used it just fine under 4.2.1, and i tried 20mhz N only on both bansd and still nothing would connect.

I'm a computer engineer and programmer so I troubleshooted every possible cause with this affecting all idevices, and what I see on the forums this is a HUGE screw up in the release of iOS 4.3

I'm just shocked there are NO press releases. 54Mbit is not enough to stream HD movies to an iPad. The iPad does not buffer to storage like the ATV2, it buffers to ram. So on a G/A network, HD video streams to my iPad then stops every 1-2 mins

However, I was able to downgrade everything to 4.2.1 again because apple is still signing it

I started a new thread , this one, with a better title so search engines, etc can find this info easier

Novice user here. Grasped using ipad2 but can't grasp how to hold my wifi connection. I have a sitcom wireless router 300n and continually losing connection even when sitting next to the router. Have read all the threads but don't understand tech stuff. Can you help?

It can't just be Wireless N.  I'm using a D-Link modem/router in one (DSL 2640B) that doesn't even have 802.11n, just b and g, and both my iPhone 4 and my girlfriend's iPad 2 drop internet connection like it's hot.  It only has 2.4GHz setting and some other rate settings that I don't know what to set to...  I'm still going to enable the WMM and see what happens and I'll post back here in a couple days.

Anyone else having this problem that doesn't use Wireless N?

Well, that didn't work either.  My Macbook and Airbook both work just fine.  Anyone have any other fixes?

Ok, on my D-link router, I've turned off "54g Protection" and set the 54g mode to "54g performance."  54g protection supposedly allows 802.11b devices to co-exist on the same network as newer modes, but I don't think anyone has those devices anymore so turning it off might help.  So far, it's been more stable--no drops for a few hours now.  Will post back later.

I've done a lot of searching.  And I have played around with a lot of settings.  On non-apple routers, I found the issue is iOS and handling of DHCP.

Without trying to "tweak" any router settings, merely making IP reservations in the router's DHCP settings, I have completely eliminated any issues with any of my iOS devices.  This is iPads (1 and 2) and iPhones (3G).  This IS a known issue (searh Google for Princeton iOS DHCP - they are working with Apple on it).

I have had no issues with my Airport Extreme.  Only with non Apple routers.  No issue with Android or Windows devices.

Most every message talks about changing router settings, and that is all well and good in some cases. But, what about when I use WIFI at a public location? Am I supposed to tell every restarant and coffe shop that they need to make changes so that my Apple iPad can use their WIFI? Heck no. This needs to be addressed by Apple at the iDevice level, not at the outer level. I connect to at least 10 WIFI routers daily which I have no control over, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

Apple please start getting involved in this disscusion and give us some answers.

    Regards,

    Bill

    Hi,

I had the same described problems with my iPad 2 Wifi 32gb connecting the Wifi (interruptions), I have AVM Fritz!Box 3270 as a router. Fortunately I found an easy solution: I just made an update of the routers firmware (just check the routers website for further information. It`s not that complicated, normally you have to run a specific website with a device (laptop) within the network.)

After the update everything worked perfect!

By using the special website entering the router firmware you also have the possibility to check which devices are within the wifi network and you can choose to give a fix IP to your iPad, this might help, too.

    Best regards

    Ibo

After the same problems with my ipad, I took it back to the Apple store (not from where I bought it).

The first time I had them re set the ipad to it's out of box state and after this it worked fine for a week.

I again went back to the store and they changed it for a new one. That was two months ago and I have

    had no further problems.

The answer is, take it back to an Apple store and ask for another ipad.

Why did you replay to this old thread that is so outdated.

I'd suggest you explain exactly what your problem is in a new thread.

I face EXACTLY the same issue. I am SHOCKED that Apple could have screwed up so badly.

My original iPad (the first version) worked fine

    Long story short:

I can connect my iPad 2 to Linksys E3200 in N only mode 5GHz but as mentioned I have to enable WMM.

But when WMM is enabled the AirPlay connection between iPad 2 and my new Apple TV 3G won't work.

I have to wait maybe 30 seconds for the iPad display to get synced to the Apple TV 3G.

But the connection is very very slow, swipes across the screen are not recognized on the TV at all, there isn't any movement.

Airplay Mirroring with Real Racing 2 is not possible at all, seems like Apple TV 3G is freezing.

Even if I want to play music it does not work!

I hear every 5 seconds a small outtake of the musik I attempting to stream from my iPad 2 to the Apple TV 3G...

The only solution is to disable WMM... but guess what... iPad 2 is not able to connect with N network 5GHz anymore

Why I'm not using mixed mode? Because the AirPlay Mirroring of Real Racing 2 has long response times, the game is stuttering every second and is freazing every 10 seconds... unplayable...
