Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

I dont understand why so many confusion..

I have an ipad 2 with 4.3.3 and it had wifi problems too.. droped connection and when wake up have to turn off wifi and on again.

The problem is the router  encriptation I have always wpa2 and I had to changed it to WEP or with no passwd to ipad works.

Thats a conflitct between ipad encriptation and some routers encriptation. "Some" routers" because I have a Hub modem/router and what I did was to disable wifi in Hub and with a linksys wrt54gc connect the device to Hub and enable wifi on it and now everything works like a charm. I say everything because I have a photosmart premium and it had the same issues that ipad had, Wifi problems.

So many ppl dont have this kind of problems because they routers work fine and dont do that conflict.

So dont blame Apple... blame yours routers

Ah forgot to say  I went to my second house where I have internet with other router and there everything works fine too

In my office we share wifi routers  so changing routers or configs of routers isn't an option.  It's an Apple bug.  Seriously.

If you have two iPad2s one of which works on WiFi and one of which doesn't then you need to to get the non-functional iPad replaced.

Note that when your broken iPad2 was fixed it probably wasn't a repair the whole iPad2 was likely replaced with a refurbished iPad2. You may have gotten a defective iPad2 replacement. The replacement could still be under warranty (I believe that it is 90 days). You should investigate getting it replaced.

FYI: Apple is not listening here. This is a user-to-user help forum. Bugs and complaints should be reported to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

Well, I *DO* blame Apple when I have HP, Compaq, Motorola, LG, Lenovo, Samsung, Microsoft (Xbox) and a myriad of other brand devices that ALL work flawlessly on the same wireless network with the same wireless router with the same settings.

So you're saying that ALL these devices have some sort of problem that let's them work okay with my router, but my Apple iPad so perfectly adheres to the wireless protocol that it is unreliable on the same network?

I'm sorry, but that defies all logic.  You have to be a pretty big Apple supporter to excuse their faults that readily!

I just want my $600 iPad to work as well my other, less expensive devices!

I am frustrated by the same connection drops. No other device omn my network has an issue except my iPad 2 32G WiFi.

Test your iPad 2 on some other networks. If it doesn't work there then get it replaced at an Apple store or call Apple support.

Even more frustrated that apparently Apple doesn't see a problem.

Apple is not monitoring these forums for problem reports. Problems can be reported to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html However. if you have non-functioning equipment you need to directly contact Apple.

I have had my iPad 2 since April 32gb wifi 3G. I have the wi fi showing a strong signal but sometimes it will not connect to sites on Safari or allow email downloads. Yesterday I unplugged my Netgear router from the mains, waited 1 minute and plugged it in again. After starting up the iPad it works great now. Question: Does the router store up data and need to be cleared from time to time? This solution works for me so it may be worth a try by you who have the problem. Be careful not to press the reset button on the router or your settings will be lost! Just switch off the power to the router or unplug it as above. Good luck.

I did the same but the problem returned. I found resetting the network on the iPad gave me the best results but was only temporary. Never had to do anything to my router from day one and it's worked fine for the past 4 years. Only since I got the iPad has this problem surfaced. My cell and Mac work fine.

A common router problem is the the DHCP daemon will stop or hang. This daemon is responsible for allocating local network IP addresses to devices attaching to the local network (LAN). When this service is down new devices attempting to attach to the will not be able to obtain an IP address. In this state they will be unable to access the internet. Other devices which already have an IP address will continue to work. Restarting the router fixes this problem because, when the router reboots, it restarts the DHCP daemon and things return to normal. However, the restart does not fix whatever bug caused the DHCP daemon to stop in the first place and the problem may return. A firmware update to the router might provide a more permanent solution to the problem if new firmware is available and the underlying problem has been corrected in it. Other router problems like memory leaks, etc, will also be corrected with a restart.

Down grading to WEP is not an acceptable solution! Hackers refer to encryption systems that can be hacked by automated software trivial. WEP is trivial encryption and is not recommended by Apple or anyone else for that matter. The risk is that once having hacked yor WEP encryption, your system becomes available to other people in wireless range.

How incredibly stupid that would be if that were really the case. Other companies spend millions of dollars soliciting and gaining access to customer feed back. Do you mean that Apple hosts this forum and then are stupid enough to not scan it for common customer feed back? Is Steve Jobs just so brilliant and arrogant that he knows what's best for his customers without listening to them?

On the other side maybe you are right because if Apple understood the level of lost custoemr satisfaction they would also understand the downstream economic impact. It's amazing how quickly customer perception can damage/destroy companies, especially when customers think they are being brushed off (Firestone/Ford anyone?).

For many year Apple was the underdog to companies like Microsoft. The underdog can get away with really poor service and customers will still champion them as long as they do a few cool things. (Apple has done lots of cool things).  But when you become the 800lb Gorilla the Tall Poppy Syndrome takes over and customer tolerance to being fobbed off becomes almost non existent very quickly.

This issue alone won't cause Apple a problem but on top of other 'wireless issues' they have had in the past with iphones and one or two future wireless incidents customer resentment could very quickly hit critical mass.

Imagine the consequence of the iPhone 5 and iPAD 3 not having rock solid wireless performance. A very common theme of posts in this thread has been "all my other wireless devices work perfectly on my network except my iPad". Apple could become known as the technology company who just can't get wireless right.

Sorry, that's the case. There are far better channels to give feedback to Apple on it's products and to report problems. I posted the one for the iPad (http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html) previously.

These forums are primarily for users to help one another. They are not intended for problem reporting to Apple. The other channels are far better for that purpose.

See http://www.apple.com/feedback/ for all the feedback channels for Apple.

The feedback channels are not anonymous and provide a way for Apple to request additional information if needed.

i have found that calling the cable company and having them reset the cable modem, then i do a warm reset on my router  by just unplugging it, then reset not just network settings but all settings on my ipad2, has solved the problem i am 2 weeks in with no issues.. for a while i was tethering to my iphone using blue tooth and it never droped comming out of sleep, and seeing as that is the primary use was to tether it from my phone while im not at home so i had somthing a bit larger to view web pages on it was no big deal but ive since discoverd that for the last two weeks my wifi signal droping problem has stoped all together.. mind you i also was connecting to a wireless guest network at my place of employment as well and i would always loose the signal comming out of sleep. perhaps its more than one problem with more than one router.. it may be several issues with different hardware thats out there and maybe THATS why there isnt a single fix as of yet. im just guessing but  i would say its a few different issues that when combined create this headache, for instance an ipad2 with the latest software connecting to a router thats not been reset in a while thats connected to a modem thats never been reset would probably be a prime situation for this to occur. good luck to you all. hope my information helps some people.

I already typed my issue, which made no sense.... So I traded for a white one, works great with security enabled....connected fine.....clearly some flaw somewhere....

This is the first explanation that makes sense. Best of luck.
