Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

This wifi problem has affected to tons of iPad 1 and 2 and the most surprising me is that until now apple still unable to solve this problem, I hope apple should provide the solution ASAP, if not I will never buy any apple products in future.

So many ppl dont have this kind of problems because they routers work fine and dont do that conflict.

So dont blame Apple... blame yours routers

I have just bought an iPad 2 myself and while there may be router issues with some, there is definately something wrong wiht the iPad itself which IS apples fault.   If the iPad wouldn't connect to the wifi at all then fine, but what people are saying is exactly what I am experiencing, and that is intermittent connection - i.e. it will connect but for no reason whatsoever the signal just drops out.

This would be a concern of the router if I didn't have both my iPhone and MBP sitting right next to me having no problems at all, so not sure how you can say this is a pure router issue when it is clear that it is somethign specific to the iPad.

Also, the iPad wifi signal is so weak that unless i'm in the same room at the router I don't get any signal at all, even in the next room - while again, there is nothign wrong with me iPhone or MBP signal.

All in all a very poor showing of something so integral to the iPad's daily use and I am going to take mine back and get a replacement tomorrow, if that doesn't work then i'llbe getting my money back and going to a different tablet option.   Very disappointed at Apple going so rapidly downhill with quality of product.  People don't mind paying the extra, because they've always been exceptional standard, if that goes then i'm sorry but "brand name" isn't enough for me to stick with faulty electronic gadgets!

This wifi problem actually is the apple own bug, i have asked a lot of my friends those using ipad currently, and all of them also facing this wifi problem. We have tested with android device and found that in 10 minutes, the ipad can drop the wifi for more than 6 times while android is 0 time, so obviously this problem is apple own problem, not the router.

My iPad 2 may be bad hardware. The Wi-Fi works fine at fullbattery. Once the battery is around 60%, then it works intermittently. At 50%of the battery, the Wi-Fi doesn’t work at all. How do I know it is the battery? Once I plugged in my charging cable, Wi-Fi started working again on my iPad 2.

Has anyone else noticed that the Wi-Fi doesn’t work as the battery level drops?

That doesn't sound good. If it's still under warranty I'd return it. Explain exactly what you you wrote down here. Anything that sounds like a battery problem is usually exchanged easily. If you have the same problem with the next one it's probably not a battery issue. In that case you have one of two options. Wait around for an answer like the rest of us or return it and purchase some other tablet.

My wife's iPad 2 is dropping signal all the time. She has to reboot the iPad to get it working again. She had it in June and it was fine - but the past few weeks it has been driving us mad.

We use a BT homehub and that is a good hub.

    Any ideas?

I too bought an IPad 2 in June. It worked fine until three weeks ago when it started to drop the wifi connection. I have an IMac a MacBook as well as a windows laptop and all of these worked ok from the same router.

Two weeks ago I took the IPad back to the apple store and got them to restore it to the factory settings. When I returned home I contacted my service provider and asked them to check the line. This proved to be working ok. After this I had the router checked and restored to factory settings and then my IPad worked perfectly. That is until yesterday when although I could" get a wifi signal there was no way that I could connect to the Internet.

Today I returned to the "Apple store " and they exchanged the IPad. This new one is working perfectly so far.

Judging by the vast amount of similar reports of wifi connection dropouts on the Ipad on support sites, I am very concerned that my hard earned money may have been wasted on what otherwise is a great piece of kit.

    Try the steps suggested here:

iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim

If these steps don't work your iPad 2 probably has a hardware problem - get it replaced.

No need to completely reboot crockers, just go to wifi network and 'forget this network', then retype password and it'll pick up your wifi signal again.  Still very annoying, but quicker than rebooting for sure...

I've got the same issue with a iPhone 4, iPad 1 & iPad 2 all running 4.3 and having wifi drop out randomly. When it does drop out I go into settings > wifi and turn it off then back on. The network can not be found but if I go back to safari within a minute the wifi has reconnected and everything works again ( until it drops out again)

Extremely frustrating and only with apple devices, windows laptop works perfectly.

Apple *****. This has been an issue with iPad since inception (iPad 1)

If this helps.... I have used my new iPad regularly at 5 locations over the last month. Only my home is a problem. (I wonder if it isn't interference from another wifi device nearby). Anyway, I am now sharing my tabletop computer's connection from ethernet over wifi (ie using another Apple device as base station, as someone recomended getting an Apple wifi cured the problem.) It has cured by dropout problems. What a pain.

You cannot both share and connect to internet using the same protocol though, (ie can't use Airport for both), so to do this you need either an ethernet or usb or other incoming connection to your computer that will be base station.

To do this you go to Sharing in Preferences. Highlight "Internet Sharing". Select the source of internet connection in pulldown. Select how you wish to share your connection "Airport" and voila.

    Good luck.

Same problem for me, too. It is time Apple sorted this out. What is the point of an IPad without consistent Wifi connection. This was it's main selling point given it's poor basic apps for documents and spreadsheets. It is mostly useful for browsing and we can't do it without interruption. Sound like a case of mis-selling to me. Perhaps we should take them to court unless they commit to sorting out what is a major problem for many of it's customers.

    Hello everyone,

Had the same issue and solved it! Read somewhere that turning off the "auto brightness" and moving the slider close to the max often solves the problem. Went to settings/brightness & wallpaper and did just that and now no more wifi problems. Don't ask why but it worked. Hope it works for you!
