Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

How many people does it take complaining about this before apple actually gets off their butts and does something about it?! I got my I-pad 2 just a few months ago and it was working fine when I got it home, but since then its ability to connet to the internet has been a joke. All my other wi-fi decives including my i-touch are working just fine. And I can't honestly believe its a router issue...or a screen brightness issue...or whatever other bs apple continues to remedy this with....the solution is simple...fix it....

    PLEASE DO SOMETHING !!

I REALLY WILL GO BACK TO THE APPLE STORE AND GIVE BACK THIS I PAD 2 !!!

As I'm reading all the chats I can find on the internet with this topic, it's seems to be a very common trouble with this weird IP address (169.xxx.xxx.xxx) for the Ipad 2 while the wifi connection is just fine for other devices connected !!

First messages I have found, posted about this problem were from begining 2010 ... Come on !!

As I'm from France, is that the same for all over the world ??!!

... I can't believe it from an Apple device !

This is a user-to-user help forum. You aren't talking to Apple here. We are all users.

If you are getting a 169.x.x.x IP address this means that your iPad is not being assigned a proper local network IP address by your router.

Try restarting your router to see if this corrects the problem (remove power to router to router for 30 seconds and restart). If that doesn't work look for a firmware update for your router.

If nothing works for you. try testing your iPad on some other WiFi networks. If it has problems there it may have a hardware problem and need replacement.

Since there are over 30,000,000 iPads out there what might seem to be a "common" problem actually isn't.

I have found several times that resetting/restoring them resolves the problem...but only for a few days at best. I have never had a restore resolve the problem for more than a few days.

"This is a user-to-user help forum. You aren't talking to Apple here. We are all users."

Smart companies monitor user-forums, and by most measures Apple is a very smart company. That said, same wifi issue here (MBP strong signal, iPad2 weak or none) so not an isolated issue and not resolved to date. Apple Store response... "try this one (replacement) instead."

I bought my iPad2 some months ago.

With the 3G Internet connection i did not have any problem whatsoever,

but the WIFI connection to my linksys wireless router would drop the connection to my iPad2

after at most a couple of hours, right from day one.

The only remedy being, to do a hard reset of my router,

after which the wireless connection would function again for some hours.

I tried a lot of proposed solutions given on this discussion-board,

none of which appeared to work out in the long run.

Then about 2 weeks ago I decided to try a wild guess:

I changed the channel for the wireless transmission on my linksys router,

from 6 to 1. From that moment on the WIFI connection to my iPad was much more stable !

At this moment, my WIFI connection is up and running for more than 2 days

    without any problems.

Can anybody confirm that this solution also works for him / her ?

I would like to hear that on this discussion board !

    Thanks!

A quick update on my own personal situation.

Since moving back to my own apartment (rather than trying the iPad while at my parents place) I have had no problems with the wireless connection, BUT I am in the same room as the router which worked fine like that at my parents too.   I am aware that the signal from my parents wi-fi router isn't the best anyway and while my iPhone may connect I can't rule out it just switching to 3G connection when the wi-fi drops out and I would expect my MBP to have a stronger signal anyway.

Bottom line is it seems to be working fine now, but just has insanely weak signal strength which I am concerned about since the whole point of havign the Wi-fi is to utilize wi-fi hotspots in pubs and libraries etc, which given the strength of signal required I am not convinced it is fit for purpose in this front.

Can't fault the rest ofthe iPad though since it is very sleek, apps run smoothly and the screen resolution for movies is outstanding, just a pity that such a nice package is slightly tarnished by such a dodgy wi-fi experience, something inherant to the iPad's full functionality as a we-browser...Hopefully something can be fixed, my return period has not yet expired.

Ii've tried a few different channels and admittedly some were better than others but I still drop out every 5 to 10 minutes.  It did help my sister with connection to her new MacBook air though!

As stupid as it sounds, this solution worked perfectly for me on an ipad2 that I was 2 days too late to return.  Had all of the problems with wifi, and the only thing that worked was turning it on and off.  I read this post last nite, did it, and haven't had a problem since.  Not an apple fan to begin with - but wife had to have the ipad.  Glad this worked... wasn't looking forward to trip to apple store.   Thanks for posting it.

Sorry - should have included the post that worked... here it is...

    Hello everyone,

Had the same issue and solved it! Read somewhere that turning off the "auto brightness" and moving the slider close to the max often solves the problem. Went to settings/brightness & wallpaper and did just that and now no more wifi problems. Don't ask why but it worked. Hope it works for you!
