Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

Oh...  Well, it has fixed my IPAD issues anyway.

I don't get sucked into the whole "security conspiracy" anyway, anti-virus companies, security consultants - they are all out to scare you into buying their products.

I don't think anyone is going to try and "hack my wireless"...

    Don't believe the hype!

You're right. Statistically, it is unlikely....but then again so is winning the lottery and yet it happens every week.

I have had this same issue with D-Link DIR615 wireless router.

    My two 'fixes':

    1. set your ipad a static IP in network settings, refresh the connection with the app IP Scanner (lite) after everytime it drops out

    2. I also have turned of 'auto-brightness' which I found on another forum. I have no idea how that interacts with wi-fi, but the ipad has remained connected since.

btw - D-Link doesn't show the iPad (or allow me to add it an allocated ip because it doeson't like its MAC address, but IP Scanner does?

    I have the same problems.

I've updated my router, which is a standard, Cisco RV 120W. No luck. FWIW, I doubt it has anything to do with my router. It's a standard consumer device, available on Amazon, etc. Reset my network settings on my iPad2. Nada.

What's worked for me, was to reset my router -- don't ask why I didn't do this first! Been going 3 days now on that one. I've noticed other weird networking issues with Lion, such as my network connections drop when my MBP goes to sleep. I'm sure it's all related. Hopefully, a fix is on the way.

i have also had a problem with the ipad 2 and the wifi connection. i have had it for nearly four months and the connection in my house is awful, it constantly jumps in and out of connection. we have tried moving wireless phone base stations as directed by apple and still no difference. the only place i have uninterrupted connection is in the office where the router is. any advice on what to do, its really frustrating.

I too had the same problem with my Ipad 2. I had had it for three months with no problems and then it started to drop the wifi connection. I tried various new settings both on the Ipad and on my router and the signal would stay on for a couple of days or for just an hour or so and then drop out again. I went back to the Apple shop and asked them to reset my  Ipad to it's out of box state, having first ensured that I had backed up everything on the Ipad. It worked fine for four days and then the same problem returned so I again went back to Apple and without hesitation, they offered to change it for a new one. This new one has been perfectly OK for the last two weeks now. I should say that each time I took the Ipad back to Apple it worked perfectly well in the store and the staff there denied that this problem is as common as support sites suggest. Only time will tell if the problem has gone away for me, but I suggest that you go back to Apple and ask for a replacement.

    Hope that this helps you.

My iPad2 just started this intermittent on/off cycle with wi-fi after having it for several months.  After reading many of these posts I unplugged my router and restarted it and the wi-fi has been stable for a good hour.  Keeping my fingers crossed that this will solve this frustrating issue.  Apple needs to get on the mark with this as it seems like hundreds of problems out there.

I really think the issue is with the router (in my case anyway).

I have changed my D-Link DIR 615 setting as below (and with a static IP set in the ipad) I haven't had any drop outs since.

Logged in to the DIR 615 as Admin:

Set up (at the top of configs page)
Network Settings (on left menu of 'set up' page)

DHCP Server Settings (second section in ' network settings'
"Use this section to configure the built-in DHCP Server to assign IP addresses to the computers on your network."

Always broadcast :  'Tick'   (compatibility for some DHCP Clients) <<< this was the setting that seems to have fixed it.

Tried reset network /. Renew lease etc.... But what worked permanently was to change wifi from automatic channel selection  to a set channel

I am sorely disappointed that the store did not let me know of this issue before I bought it. I got it for my wife and now she doesn't want it since she cannot connect to the internet. I know that Apple is aware of this problem, so what's taking them so long to fix it?????????? At this point I cannot recommend buying an iPad2 to anyone and wonder how to alert potential buyers.

My iPad 2 began to have these troubles as well after working fine for several months.  I restored my iPad first with no luck so I started checking the site.  I decided not to try the various modifications suggested and instead I contacted Apple and indicating my problem and that I had read the comments on this thread.  Aside from asking me if I had done a restore, the representative immediately asked for my address (I have no Mac store in my town) so they can send me the shipping materials so that I can send my iPad back and they are going to replace it.  Clearly this is an issue that Apple is aware, so it might prove to be more effective and less of a hassle to contact Apple directly or go to a Mac store before altering all your router configurations and such. Here is hoping that the replacement will not have these problems and that Apple is fixing the problem...

I really hate going to the Genius Bar. I've been in 5 times with three problem Macs. One scored a groove in the middle track of any CD/ DVD. I waited 45 minutes after my appointment... only to be told "that's weird."

Here's my fear, everything you detailed is exactly what I wanted in a tablet. Running whatever app I wanted, when I wanted. Multitasking, Wi-Fi, and 3G for back up. My iPad 2 is a 64GB with Verizon 3G. Everything was great, until this morning, I got an alert that the network was unavailable. This has happened a number of times. I select a network and I'm back in business. Today, with a 100% charge from the enclosed charger, the Wi-Fi was grayed out. I did everything from restarting, to back up and restore as new, I put it over my head and shook it like an Etch A Sketch. I spent two hours on the phone with a customer service person, her manager, and an advisor. End result, I have an appointment with a Genius at the busiest and most crowded mall in Southern California.

I've read everything about a potential cause for the "Wi-Fi grayed out."  Whatever wierdness is going on, Apple should address it's loyal customers. My network is strictly Apple from off the cable modem to the 4 iPhones, 3 iPads, and 12 verities of Mac.

I have a confession to make. The iPad was not my first choice. I had an equally configured HP TouchPad and it's companion webOS HP Veer. It was a great three weeks of multitasking, running too many applications, etc. I set up the network once and it never failed. The TouchPad and Veer conjoined in a near perverted way (you placed the back of the Veer on top of the Touchpad home button and they exchanged information... well you get the idea). I rushed those puppies back to Amazon the day they announced the death of webOS.

If you haven't figured out by now, I'm just going to keep typing unto my name call out by a Genius Wrangler.

Here I sit. Two hours of listening to Orange County housewives trying to launch sing careers with Garage Band on their bedazzled iPad.

    Yeah, my turn...

Thanks for starting this tread. I am not tripping after all. Loosing wifi on the iPad seems to be a common problem.

I Just got back from some extensive traveling through europe and totally dependent on wifi access at hotels, cafe's restaurants, bars, etc. And found that my wifi was always showing a worse connection strength than others (laptops- MBP's, Lenovo, HP, whatever) around me, then the problem of dropping the connection which no one else was facing. This even at 2 meters from the router. There is no way that to ask a hospitality venue to do all the configuring, resets whatever just for me when wifi works perfectly for everyone else.

Now I'm back home and the same is happening. As pointed out earlier it is the iPad that is the problem.

Is it a hardware problem or is there any sort of software reset, update or whatever to help solve this issue?

I relay on this thing for my traveling, it's saving my shoulders and don't want to go back to a laptop.

Any suggestions, help, whatever would be great.

    Thanks.

If your iPad has problems on so many different networks it probably has a hardware problem; contact Apple to get it repaired or replaced.

Since more than 30 million iPads have been sold, based on the relatively small number of problems posted here, I don't believe that "loosing wifi" is a common problem. I've never had a problem with my iPad at any WiFi hotspot I've used.

My iPad 2 was dropping the connection periodically and failing to reconnect after hibernating. This is on the same Linksys wrt54gs v1.1 router that has reliably supported 4 laptops, 2 desktops and 3 iPod touches. Sigh... After minor tweaks to the router (I updated the firmware to the latest Tomato release and broadcast the SID) I continued to have problems with the iPad 2. I tried a new Netgear dual band N600 and the iPad 2 seems to hang onto the connection fine at 2.4ghz band as long as I broadcast the SSID.

It seems my iPad 2 does not have as robust wifi as any other wireless device I have owned. Great device, however I would not give the wifi 5 stars. When iOS 5 comes out I may put the Linksys back in service to see if the iPad does any better.
