Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

I agree with this, I moved my WAP closer to where I use my iPad generally and haven't experienced any problems since.  Having said that, it seems some people still have problems even when sitting on top of their access points...

I can hardly believe I have found a 79 page thread which more or less describes the problems I have with a nearly new Ipad2 with IOS5.

The Ipad2 has had consistent problems with wifi but they seem to have got worse lately.

It now won't connect to any of several access points - 2 x Linksys and 1 x Draytek. I have tried WPA/PSK/TKIP and WPA/PSK/AES, and 11b+g rather than 11b+g+n, etc, but it doesn't make any apparent difference. It finds the network OK but doesn't connect (doesn't say why, of course) most of the time and if it does it drops the connection after some minutes. The signal level is good.

Apple seem to have problems with gradually failing hardware, because we have an Iphone4 which stopped answering incoming calls. Quite weird, and the person in the Apple shop reproduced the problem, then upgraded the firmware, the problem was still there, so we got a new one. It worked for SMS but not incoming GSM voice calls. I am a hardware/software developer and this kind of thing is mysterious.

We are taking the Ipad2 back to the Apple shop tomorrow and hopefully they will swap it for a new one. The HDMI output also stopped working... after about half an hour.

i'm not bragging by any means, but i bought iPhone4 october 2010, and iPad2 in june this year, and have never had any issues with either one. My issues if any, are Server related problems, e.g outtages etc . i just love both these Products , if i'm to be without them i think i'd be a complete mess, but just wish i could have SIRI now.lol !!!

However when i read about all the the issues in this thread, i wish i could help, but feel helpless , i just needed someone to know that there is at least one Happy iProduct user. By the way, im looking at purchasing a Mac PC next year, fingers crossed it will be just as good. i mean they say third time lucky

I'm really disapointed with my new ipad 2, just bought it and i'm having the same problems most of the people here have. Tried changing the wifi router for another one i just bought with 802.11n capability but no success. The wifi signal keeps failing including a few meters away from the AP. What a shame.

HAve had this problem and variations of it since I got iPad a month ago. First I switched to B/G or G. Under channel I did NOT use AUTO. I used channel 11.  Right now I am getting fast speeds, close to 20mbs dowload. I am sure there is more but this seems to have made a IBG difference.  Still testing though.

    Well, here we go.

Took the Ipad2 to the Apple shop. They said they could not find a fault with the wifi, on their shop access points. However they did reproduce the HDMI output problem (the output would die after ~3 minutes) and this was the clincher - I got a new Ipad2.

Now, at home, the new one connects to my existing access points immediately! So there was a problem with it after all.

I first encountered this thread when it was at 75 pages. After trying pretty much every suggestion it contained, I finally gave up and got a full cash refund for my 32gb wifi iPad2 from Tesco (UK supermarket with a no-fuss returns policy, top marks to them).

It is a shame,  the ipad was my first experience of iOS and I was very impressed with it as a UI, and with the stylish build of the ipad2. But the random and erratic nature of it repeatedly losing connection to a stable router made my iPad unusable. Combined with Apples complete lack of acknowledgement of this issue,  I simply had no choice but to return it.  Incidentally, the router continues to serve a range of other devices without any issues whatsoever, only the iPad has ever had problems with it.

What surprises me is that I simply cannot understand why Apple are not doing something about it. This thread is now at 79 pages ; they cannot deny that there is a fundamental issue with (at least) a batch of iPads.

I am now patiently waiting for the announcement of the Asus Transformer 2 which looks a tantalising piece of kit. I believe its due to be announced 9 Nov.

For the sake of everyone on here, I hope Apple do resolve this. But for me, I'll go with Android.

Exactly what I had. No problems with many other wifi clients.

I think the Apple people know all about it, and are probably running around like blue ***** flies (a UK expression ) trying to keep a lid on it. I guess they will fix it ASAP.

A part of the problem, I think, is that Apple are not using the same (common) chips which others are using in consumer IT equipment. I cannot see any other way to explain these very subtle compatibility issues which, in the wider marketplace, were put to bed years ago.

One of my access points is a brand new Draytek 800.

My experience, which seems pretty similar to a lot of people in here:

I have had the issues with both generations of iPad. It seems much more frequent with iPad2. I also have an Apple TV 2nd gen with the same connection drops rendering it practically useless due to frustration. The iPad2 is much easy to cope with due to using it mainly for surfing.

.... while writing the above, I watched the wifi bars drop from 3 to 2 every 5 to 30 seconds. I've never actually just sat and watched it before ... there it goes again ... and again ... when it drops from 3 to 2, that means my wifi connection has dropped. You would think that Apple would have programmed the software to show ZERO bars when the connection goes, but no, in my case 2 bars means ZERO connection. I just sat and watched it then, roughly 1min30secs before it dropped again, and it dropped to 2 bars for roughly 10 seconds. I have had many many times when the connection hasn't come back until I've rebooted the thing. 2 bars again ... back again ...

With iPad 1 it wasn't a huge problem. With iPad 2 it is obviously a massive problem which is why I am here. I've delayed researching other people's experiences because I assumed Apple being the tech giant they are, would fix it with a software patch. I am starting to wonder if they haven't patched it because the problem is unfixable.

    FYI - we have:

    Netgear DG834N router, with:

    2 laptops - wireless - no problems

    PS3 - wireless - no problems

    3DS - wireless - no problems

    Apple TV 2 - wireless - PROBLEMS

    iPad2 - wireless - PROBLEMS

    Epson SX600FW - ethernet - no problems

iMac - ethernet - no problems

    Win7 machine - ethernet - no problems

(why does iPad insist on capitalising the word Ethernet?! madness)

    iPhone 3G - wireless off

    iPhone 3GS - wireless off

iPhone 4G - unclear if this has problems, have not tested

It would be great if people would submit their problems to Apple as well as adding their experiences here. It only takes a couple of minutes and it would really help them sort it out ... eventually.
