Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

Wi-Fi is intermittent. Works sometimes, mostly not. Shows correct everything on connection... obviously it works some of the time. Loaded new IOS and it worked for 5 mins. then hung. All other devices in my home work fine. Tried every silly suggetion on help forums... brightness, resets, unlocking this and that, nothing works. But, at 4 in the morning, sometimes, it will work for a few minutes. Crazy. If it works for 5 minutes then everything is setup right, the point is why does it stop?

I was having issues with 2 new iPads. I tried a bunch of things, too. What finally helped was setting the broadcast channel on the router from 'auto' to a specific channel. I had to try a couple of different channels before one worked consistently.

Then I had a problem with the TiVo. Instead of messing around some more and tearing my hair out when fixing the TiVo made something else quit working, I decided to try a new router. Same brand as the old one, Netgear, but a whole different animal as it's several years newer. Works like a charm with everything now...!

Just bought an ipad 2 wifi 32GB. Opened it today and have the same issue. After researching online for a while, I found one possible solution which is to change the router setting. Basically, change security type to WPA2 (and select encryption type to TKIP). Tried it and now my ipad 2 works fine in about half an hour. Hope it continues to work well.

My issue was resolved as well - after a total reboot and still the same issue I was advised to take it to an apple store .. they gave me a brand new IPad, no questions asked and now it works PERFECT!!!!!

Does anyone think that increasing one's DSL speed would help this problem?  I currently have 3M but I can get 12M if it would help.  I'd have to pay another $10/month and get another modem/router.

No. The issue most people are having is related to the internal wireless network. Increasing your ISP's speed will have no effect on the stability of your internal wireless network, however if they replace your router with a newer one this problem may in fact go away. You may want to ask them to switch your modem/router without increasing your speed? Is that possible?

I was having problems with streamming live online videos to my tv from my ipod and I found that every few minutes the internet would cut out and i would have to keep resetting my ipod internet..Yet my laptop was fine!! However after lots of messing around and reading forums I tried a simple change on my ipod and wow.... I can now watch my online videos without the ipod's intenet stopping... I simply went into the ipods wifi settings, clicked on my wifi then dhcp settings and changed the http proxy from off to auto)

It works perfectly for me now, No skipping or loss of intenet ....

I have iPad2 32G AT&T 3G+WiFi with IOS 5.0.1 (9A405) for a while now.  It works fine until recently.  3G has no issue.  WiFi will locked up the iPad2 and not able to connect to my home network.  I have multiple Netgear routers (WDNR3400 V1.0.0.50_20.0.59) with 2.4Ghz (b/g/n) and 5.0GHz (a/n) dual-band running.  Followed some of the suggesstions by turning off dual-band (in this case 5.0Ghz (a/n), reboot routers, reboot iPad2 -- fixed the issue.  No need to change WPA2, or upgrade router's firmware.  Thanks for the help.

    PROBLEM SOLVED!

I read and tried everything to get my iPad2 to function on my router (Wi-Fi). EVERYTHING!

Two days ago I went to my doctors office and used his Wi-Fi connection. Everything worked fine. I stayed there for 30 mins to make sure because, at home, it would occasionally work in the early morning for a few minutes then stop. In Settings everything was totally normal. The connection was there, everything checked out. But if I went into Safari it would say it couldn't find the Server! Frustrating!

Amazingly, after exercising the unit at my doctors office it has now worked perfectly for three days! I now have essentially have a new iPad2. iOS 5, and a browser! What else could I want? (except my wife and I bought two Amazon Kendal Fires, just to see what the non-Apple people are doing.

But, I believe, somehow, exercising my iPad at my doctors office fixed my problem that had been going on for months!

    Wild! Huh!

I am having this problem with my iPhone 4.  It began a week ago.  My iPad 2 & my kids' 2 iPod touches stay connected to our wifi just fine.  DH has even set my iPhone to a static IP on our router and its still not working.

I found a somewhat successful resolution to this. First, updating my comcast router's firmware did help for a while, not huge but it was better.

Second, the issue only seems to affect me when the wifi is idle, meaning if I'm browsing, the wifi seems to drop out when I'm reading a page.

So, since I have no issue with streaming content, I just keep Pandora (try with your favorite streaming service) and it seems to keep the wifi running non stop. Lame? Sure, but effective.

I have the exact same problem, bought the iPad 2, Wifi 16GB, iOS 5.01 on Dec 16. It was working fine until Dec 31. Intermittent wifi connection, could only get connected under 5 minutes. FRUSTRATING!!

The iPad use to work fine on public wifi, at home, at the office and also using my Mifi. Tried restoring several times to no avail. I use the iPad for work, so its extremely frustrating that everytime I need to go online or transfer presentation files and pictures, I still need to go back to my MBP. It's not a router issue, it's an iPad issue, We can't expect to change other people's router settings, the office, the cafes or other public places. I dont think that solves the problem.

So far no updates have been released and I see a lot of people are having the same problem. FIX THIS APPLE!! ITS BEEN GOING ON FOR TOO LONG!!

I am having the exact same issue.  I have an iPad 2, 64MB, WiFi only, iO5 5.0.1.  I regularly connect to 3 different wireless networks, and over the last week or so, the iPad intermittently recognizes the internet connection on those wireless networks.  My computer is connecting to those networks fine.  During this last week, it has mainly NOT been connecting to the internet through the wireless networks.  I have re-set the wireless networks and re-set the iPad several times to no avail.

I am going to be traveling soon, and I need to be able to connect to the internet on my iPad, because I am not taking my laptop computer with me, and changing the settings on the wireless networks that I encounter is not an option.  Any other solutions or causes to the problem (perhaps an app that I installed) would be greatly appreciated.

Exactly what I have been saying. Most of the time I use WIFI at locations other than at home. It is obviously a problem with the iPad2 and not the routers. My iPad2 worked great for 3 months until upgrading to iOS5. But, it's becoming very apparent that Apple has NO intension on fixing this issue.
