Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

    Hi there,

    try this solution

    Reset network settings

To reset your network settings, tap Settings > General, then tap Reset > Reset Network Settings.

When the device restarts, try to locate and join the Wi-Fi network again.

    It worked for me.

    Thanks

    Deepika

THere have been several suggestions made by the members here in the 91 pages I've been reading. (and yes, I solved my own problem following these suggestions):

    1. Change encryption to WPA

    2. Increase display brightness

    3. Turn off "Ask to join other networks"

    4. Reset the iPad

    5. Use a fixed IP address

    6. Change channels or turn off "Auto" channel selection.

    7. Use "n" instead of "b" or "g".

    8. Update firmware of access point / router.

    9. Bring the access point nearer to the iPad.

    Good luck.

Thank you for the answer but probably I didn't explain my problem well....

The entire wifi network crash randomly when I use ipad2. All the mac/pc can't access to the network and so to the router administration page.

I get he same problem....nothing in this 90+ pages solves it. I have to turn the router off and on again. My wife wont let me use the ipad when she is working.

And the emos at the apple store pretend they have never heard of the problem.

I will never spend another cent on an apple product again.

    100% agree with you.

Apple unfortunately have great ideas, as always, but in the last 3 years care more about design and marketing instead of quality.

I'd like that Woz has control on the entire company but I understand that it will never happen.

Anyway, I'll never buy an Apple product anymore and for the iPad I think I'll call the apple care everyday since the warranty ends and replacing it every time...

p.s. there is a powerful tool like this forum for Apple and no one from the support reply or say "ehy we're very sorry about the problem. we'll try to fix it in the production factory or redesigning it or whatever.... and we extend your warranty for an extra year as refund for the inconvenience..." something like that, I don't know.

I spent 600€ for the iphone 3gs and extre 69€ for the apple care...it broke up 12 days after the warranty end and they ask me 211€ for replacing it...****!!

    Hello everybody,

I had read a lot of stuff about this kind of problem here and I had tried differents posibles solutions and nothing yet, my problem still on and it's really annoying.

    This is my case:

I have an iPad2 since september last year and this wi-fi intermittent conectivity issue starts last week, my wireless router is a NETGEAR (802.11 b/g) using WEP encryption (since forever), I also using an iPhone, my HP laptop and my xbox 360 console and none of this products present this type of problem only my iPad.

I reset the wi-fi settings, last night I reset my iPad to factory settings (brand new), I change the wireless channels in my router, I add the mac address to the "secure" list in my router and the problem continues, I also spoke with Apple Technical Support and he recommended change the encryption from WEP to WAP2. I will try this later at home.

Does anybody have a real solution to fix this problem??? or I just need to send my iPad to a Apple support center and wait if my iPad do have a hardware problem???

Thank you and I hope you guys can help me.

Try not holding your iPad on the edge which has the home button. Holding it at that edge seems to deteriorate the wii signal and I can drop out. Try laying the iPad down so your not holding it and see if that makes any difference.

    Thank you iainwilkie,

But the problem is not the signal or the reception, because I can be in front of the router in the same room or the room next to it (with 2 o 3 bars in the signal) and the wi-fi connectivity still intermittent, the funny thing is sometimes my LAN doesn't appear on the list and when this happened I need to turn off the wi-fi and turn on but sometimes this solution doesn't fix the problem so I turn off the iPad and the turn on in order to wait if my LAN appears on the list and as you can see thin could be very frustrating and annoying because you expect a quality product if you paid for it

Are there other networks or wireless devices like cameras or baby monitors close by or even in a neighbours. A whole back before I had the iPad, I had the same kind of problem with a wireless camera which interfered with my network. A laptop on the network kept dropping off the wifi and was very annoying. I then switched the camera off and that cured it.

New Apple Store refurbished iPad 2.  I like Re-furbished, to me - it means it should have went back and should have any fixes that were figured out after the bulk initially shipped.  I buy a lot of items refurbished - and this is the first time I have felt burned.

I have a substantial home wireless network, with many wireless laptops, desktops, and printers.  None with problems.  Most Microsoft Windows, except an Archos 70 Internet Tablet and my Mac Mini.  All work flawlessly with my Linksys E1500 wifi router.  HP wifi printers, Brother wifi printers, Canon wifi printers.  DELL, HP desktops.  DELL, Toshiba laptops.  All flawlessly.

New iPad 2 - right out of the box, initially saw the network.  Very intermittment.  Leave off, may get a connection for a minute - not long enough to even complete the setup.

Very disappointed.  I guess I need to call Apple Support in the morning.

    Very disappointed

Okay here's my fix -- I'd done all the earlier fixes for my Macbook Pro and I've had no improvement in Wi-Fi connection; my Wi-Fi is (was) intermittent and when connected, very slow -- losing packets like crazy. Here is my solution for you all to try to turn your slow machines into fast internet rippers! To start, I am not a computer expert. I just finally luckily found the answer after a hundred of wasted hours of research and tech support from Charter cable and Apple. My solution is the wireless router itself. I had done all the prior mentioned adjustments and found no relief. What did it for me is going into my Charter Netgear router and unactivating the IP FLOOD DETECTION. To quote someone much more knowledgable then me, "IP Flood Detection is a type of Denial of Service attack whereby the victim or system is flooded with information, using up all available bandwith thereby preventing legitimate users from access." I had to log onto my WI-Fi router and then use navigate to a special page to find this feature.

If this does fix your problem, feel free to send me a new iPad as a token of your thankfulness.

Okay, so I'm going to add my word in here. Might as well, I guess.

The WiFi on the iPad is the only thing that doesn't work. My iPhone seems to be working fine, and of course my windows machines work fine ( thank God they "just work". )

Acceptable: A product which has a bug that is fixed immediately, or a bug that affects some minor feature of the product.

Unacceptable: A product which has it's main feature ( or part of it's main feature ) unusable due to software bugs. This is where the iPad stands. Were it something else, something that was minor, I could understand. What I find unacceptable is that the product, which had plenty of time to be tested, has major, glaring flaws in major components.

If companies can't be bothered to test and/or fix their product, they should be required to refund the money on their products affected. This would be a hefty and well deserved reminder to stop ******* around and do their jobs instead of bilking customers out of money for a half-assed product.

I want to love these products, so badly, but it's difficult when they aren't making the effort. It really degrades their entire reputation.

This worked for me and I am no expert. I totally turned off "shut down" the IPad2. I shut off main PC, turned off power to router and ISP server. Then, one by one, turned on power to ISP, waited 15 seconds then turned on power to router. Turned on PC which probably wasn't necessary but did it anyway. Then turned the IPad back on and turned on WiFi. Selected my router connection and after about 10 seconds, got secure connection. Has been stable awhile now.

    Keeping fingers crossed.

    Good Luck.

Mine was a defective iPad.  Opened a case.  Took to the local iPad store, they verified - said probably the connection had bounced loose in shipping.  They refunded my purchase.  I ordered another - and it is just fine.  Not intermittent at all - it works!  Shipping, the local store, and everything went well.

It blows my mind that Apple doesn't take more ownership of this but I found the fix. You have to disable QoS on your wireless router. All Linksys routers have it on by default. It may also help taking your router out of mixed mode wireless and locking it in to G only. Just try it.

Turns out the Apple doesn't support QoS. Sure would have been nice of them to tell people this right out of the freaking gate!!! So technically nothing is "wrong" with the iPad or iPad2 except Apple engineers being difficult. This also improved speeds for my iPhone and my kids itouch drastically. When I mean drastic, the speeds changed from almost unusable to 15Mbit downloads!! I can finally use YouTube and downloading apps doesn't take 30 min.

I suggest everyone dl the speedtest app for free and experiment. When I started I was getting less than 1Mbit download speeds.

Of course an Apple wireless fixes the problem too! It doesn't have a QoS option because Apple knew they didn't support it. Thanks Apple for wasting my last 2 hours and costing many people tons of frustrations. Much appreciated.
