Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

I hope this helps you guys...

I've been researching my iPad 2 wifi problems since I got it (launch day... so a good month).  I finally concluded that I needed to buy a new router in order to get my iOS devices to all work flawlessly.

I narrowed it down to the D-Link DIR-655, as well as the Apple Airport Extreme.

I bought the Airport Extreme, and it literally solved ALL of my issues.  No more ipad 2 disconnecting wifi, no more throughput issues, no more dropping anything.  It all works, and it's worth the price of it to have my sanity back.

I know it shouldn't have to be this way, but sometimes you just can't fight city hall.  Good luck!

My iPad1 wifi works great. Just got an iPad2 - worked for a bit, now does not despite all maneuvers - I presume a fix will be coming...

SInce the 4.3.2 update, I have no more issue with the intermittent Wifi connexion...

    Router : Orange Livebox 2

Airport Express 7.5.2 : via Ethernet

NAS Synology DS110j for all the media files

    Security : WPA2-AES only

Fixed IP address for the iPad 1, NAS and Airport

Hope the bug is fixed...I will let you know after some days

I upgraded to 4.3.2 and continue to have the issue with the wifi connection being dropped whenever the iPad 2 is put to sleep and turned back on. My Rounter is SMC Networks Barricade SMCWBR14S-N4. I confirmed all the router settings match with Apple recommendations, spoke to Apple Support, and also spoke to SMC Networks tech support several times and I have come to the conclusion after many days of trial and error that there is no router setting that fixes this issue with the iPad. Conversely, it seems almost any setting I choose on the router works fine with my Dell laptop. Seems to me the fix either needs to come from Apple or I will need to buy a new router that works better with the iPad 2. Of course, that begs the question - which router is assured to work well with the iPad 2?

The problem is when you have an "triple-play" offer for TV-Internet-Phone, you can not change your router so easily...sorry for you..Hope that Apple will definitely fix the Wifi issues on the iPad 2 for all users...

Hey Plan-X - I got the exact same SMC Router; same problems, NO solutions in sight.  My best guess reading back through this discussion is to go with the D-link DIR-655.  (and what a long read it is!)

This new IPAD 2 is my first (and probably only) Apple purchase, a gift for my wife.  It's the least expensive 16gb WIFI only model, but still .7 the cost of our 50" plasma, so I am very disappointed the the bang for my buck.

I just got my iPad 2 and am experiencing the same problem while connecting to my airport extreme.. None of my other 11 apple devices drop the wifi connection.. Originally I contributed it to too many devices on my airport extreme... Checking out the discussions I see where the extreme supports 50 connections (so that's not it)... I'll keep checking back for that golden ticket.

This is simply unacceptable. Apple needs to be accountable here. My iPad 1 was fine. iPad 2 was for a couple days and then, like everyone else, it went to crap. My fix was to put a Linksys router running HyperWRT in my bedroom running as a wireless Ethernet bridge. A fairly geeky fix, unreasonable for the non-techy. As I type this, My signal wanes from full strength to one bar and it is 10 ft from me. That's right, people...10 feet. If was only consistent I might be able to work with it but smells like bad engineering both in hardware and, possibly, software.

When it is working it is a great product. Now I have to determine if I can live with this workaround or try for a replacement. I'm strongly considering the latter.

So called in this morning and after I convinced Apple support I wasn't an idiot and I had tried everything their only suggestion was to do a full restore and if that doesn't work, take it in to a local store so they can "look" at it.  Going to do this today.  My hunch is I'll be at the store before the end of the weekend with the same problem.  I hope I'm wrong.  I'll keep folks posted.

After speaking to Apple Support, they suggested I go to the Apple Store so they could run diagnostics on my iPad 2 to rule out any hardware issues that would be causing my wifi connection to drop. As it turned out, other than turning my iPad on and seeing if it connected to their unencrypted in-store wifi, there were no diagnostics run in the store at all. Instead, they simply gave me a new iPad 2 (fortunately they had the same model in stock).

Well, the new iPad 2 they gave me still has the exact same problem. Wifi connection is dropped when the iPad 2 is put to sleep and turned back on. So I guess these issues are not an issue with hardware / manufacturing inconsistencies - if you have the issue it likely won't be solved by replacing the iPad.

My rounter is SMC Networks Barricade SMCWBR14S-N4 provided as part of my Comcast cable internet. As I've stated in previous posts I've expended all options making sure this router has the latest firmware, is configured to Apple recommended settings, etc. none of which helped. I love my iPad so I guess I need to get a new router if I want the thing to work on my network. Will post again if / when I get a different router and if that resolves the issue.

Same here. Just received my iPad2 hoping it would have better WiFi than the iPad1 - which is terrible. Nope, still constantly drops connection - every few minutes. Meanwhile, I have a 4 year old windows laptop, and PS3, and even an iPhone connected just fine! The PS3 is at the other end of my house to the router, and never drops the connection. The iPad2 is literally 2 feet away and shows 1-5 bars randomly, and no connection. If I turn wireless off/on it regains a connection for a few minutes.

Sorry, but this is utter crap. I know Apple fired their phone ariel guy over iPhone4, I hope they do the same with whoever is responsible for the pathetic performance of Apple's iPad WiFi.

By the way, buying an Apple router is not an acceptable solution.

I'm experiencing the same issue. However, changing my router to accommodate the one device is not an acceptable solution. Hopefully Apple elects to do something about this. It is frustrating when my iPhone 4 and MacBook Pro all have full signals with no issues, but the iPad pulls in two bars and sloooow to no connectivity.

i'm also having the same issues...i have 2 other iphone4, apple tv2 and ipad1 connected without any issues. its just the ipad2. did the restore also. still wifi issues. looks like i've to do an exchange once they fix the hardware issue.

btw somewhere on another post it mentioned that WMM enabled on the router fixes this issue. but not for me. i also have WMM enabled.

Just got a brand new ipad2 wifi 64GB and have the same problem.  Firmware is updated to 4.3.2 and the WIFI connection runs great for about 5-10 minutes then loses all internet connectivity without any notification.

Turning airplane mode on and off in the Ipad settings restores the connection, however the icon shows WIFI connection even when it is not working.

I still have a wifi Ipad 1 and iPhone 3gs that have no problems with this same D-Link G router....Very disappointing.

you should bring your ipad 2 into a genius bar and have them take a look. you might have a defective unit.

also, have you tried updating the firmware of your router? that has helped me with a similar problem in the past.
