Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

have you upgraded to iOS 4.3.2 or 4.3.1?  I went from 4.3 to 4.3.2.  I have used my iPad in coffee shops too and have had no problems until a week ago.  It literally will not recognize any signal now.  I will be taking it into an Apply Store.  I purchased it at Best Buy, and seeing I am a former employee from there, I know they can't do anything under manufacturer warranty.

I did some rudimentary testing on the connectivity issue with both 4.3.1 and 4.3.2. The 'WiFi iDon't-wake-up' experienced when the iPad WiFi tries to wake from WiFi-iSleep appear to be identical in both versions of iOS.

With both versions of the iOS the iPAD failed to reauthenticate (iDon't-wake-up) after WiFi-iSleep, with the Cisco/LinkSys router I was using.

However although not publicised as anything addressed by 4.3.2, the WiFi connection speed seems noticeably snappier when using youtube and generally downloading mail and web pages.

Every morning or after a break of a couple of hours, my new Ipad2 stops recognizing the Wifi. The icon states full strength but the wifi does not work. I have to power on and off  the ipad. This is extremely frustating and time consuming. I have the latest software update. ANy suggestions welcome. My wifi works fine with all the other devices. Waste of $600. I cannot even return it to best buy as this problem has started occuring recently.

In New Zealand our excellent consumer protection laws (primarily the Consumer Guarantees Act and Fair Trading Act) enables customers to return the iPADs for a full credit even if the units are outside warranty. It's a well loved piece of legislation and as a business owner selling to consumers I have no problems with the protection it provides my customers and the onus it places on us to stand behind what we sell. Although it does catch out some overseas suppliers/manufacturers who are not used to such stringent customer service obligations.

Under the Act, your consumer rights are expressed as a series of "guarantees" that a seller automatically makes to you when you buy any good or service ordinarily purchased for personal use. We explain them below.

    Goods

Retailers and other such suppliers guarantee their goods will:

    • Be of acceptable quality (see definition below).
    • Be fit for a particular purpose that you asked about.
    • Match the description given in advertisements or sales brochures, or by the sales assistant.
    • Match the sample or demonstration model.
    • Be owned by the consumer, once purchased.
    • Be a reasonable price, if no price or pricing formula has been previously agreed.

Manufacturers (the definition includes importers) in New Zealand guarantee that:

    • Spare parts and repair facilities will be available for a reasonable time.
    • They will honour any written warranty that comes with their products.
    • Goods are of acceptable quality.
    • Goods match their description.

    Services

Service providers guarantee their services will be:

    • Performed with reasonable care and skill.
    • Fit for the particular purpose they were supplied for.
    • Completed within a reasonable time.
    • A reasonable price, if no price or pricing formula has been previously agreed.

    Acceptable quality

    This means goods:

    • Do what they are made to do.
    • Are acceptable in appearance and finish.
    • Are free from minor defects.
    • Are safe and durable.

The Act's terms "reasonable" and "acceptable" are deliberately open-ended. It depends on what a reasonable consumer would think was acceptable based on the nature of the goods, the price, and any statements that have been made about the goods. A concert violin is required to meet a higher standard than a child's cheap instrument. Ultimately a tribunal referee or a judge may have to decide what is reasonable or acceptable in the circumstances.

If a defect was pointed out to you before you bought the good, then it doesn't count towards making it unacceptable.

    I fixed mine!!

I was having the same problem:  My iphone Wifi works great, but my iPad2 is super slow, losing connection, etc.

To fix it all I did was went to the Settings > Wi-Fi then clicked on the blue ">" next to my Wi-Fi network.  Then I carefully wrote down all the various settings/numbers under "DHCP".  Then clicked on the "Static" tab and re-entered all the same settings/numbers.

    Voilà!  No more slow/dropped Wi-Fi!

well yes....BUT (unless I a missing something here) that method ONLY works for the network you are presently seeing on the iPhone.  That then also ASSUMES you have an iPhone handy at that time to acquire those network settings to then mirror and enter into your iPad2.

MY issue is that it seemingly does not matter WHERE I am..... I just don't "see" any wifi.  Again - today at work - a colleague 4 office doors down from me also has a 64GB wifi only iPad 2 and it sees the company wifi networks, and my iPhone4 sees the same networks, but my iPad2 does not.

SO....we shall see if the NEW iPad2 coming via AppleCare is free from these issues.

What is most frustrating is that my iPad2 USED to see wifi just fine.  And no - I haven't dropped it or submerged it.  It just stopped recognizing almost any wifi signal.

Thanx MacBook-sf  my problem has been fixed well for now but for almost 2 days it has not dropped a signal. I have a trend net TEW-651BR router I changed the auto channel scan to off and now it stays connected, when I'm on or off or in sleep mode whenever. Your advise worked thanx again!

Actually I didn't need/use the iPhone to solve my problem -- I just copies my iPad2's current "DHCP" settings and pasted them into "Static".  But if yours doesn't even see your working WiFi network it sounds like there's a bigger problem.  Hope the new one from AppleCare works!!

I have this exact same problem.  I'm using a Belkin N+ router, and if I turn off WPA security, the problem goes away 100%.  However, having no security enabled on my network isn't exactly the "solution" I'm looking for.  For now, I've disabled broadcasting my SSID and enabled MAC filtering, but I shouldn't have to do this, and if a determined hacker gets onto my network, I'm going to be really ****** at Apple.

....thanks all - but this still doesn't address my issue of not being able to see ANY wifi network.

The replacement rig is now likely a week away......not thrilled

Bought TWO new ipads yesterday (wi-fi 16GB / 64 GB), and both have the same issue - internet performance degrades as I move away from the router, and drops completely in the next room (15 feet away) ... Going to try and return these today.

Tried changing the router settings as mentioned in this thread, but nothing helped!

Ipad 2 32 Gb wifi only still at 4.3. Router Belkin N+. i had problems with the wifi connection from my ipad2. No problems from my other devices. Tried everything on this thread until Belkin recently updated the firmware for my router (20 April). Updated today mine. Seems that my problems are gone. :)...

Another observation after updating the router firmware is that everytime i wake the ipad from sleep mode, it appears like the wireless is reconnecting ( wifi sign not showing and appearing after a few seconds). Is like creating a new connection while before i had the the wifi sign immediately after waking up the ipad.

Same thing happened here.  I could not see any network.  Called Apple support, made an appointment at my local Apple store and they said it was a hardware issue and just replaced my iPad 2 32Gb WiFi.  It's running 4.3.1 and works great!

In regards to the Belkin N+ router, I've heard others say that the latest firmware update fixes the problem as well, however, the update doesn't work on all of the different models of the N+. Of course, I have a model that doesn't have the latest update.

I have the same issue. Only it seems to happen to me when I am out of town at hotels, etc where the auto log in auto join feature seems wonky. I will see full wifi strength but get no response from browser, mail, etc.

The auto log in auto join window that you sometimes see in the network settings is quite often missing on my iPad 2 but is seen on my iPhone in the same place.

Went to Apple Store. Genius told me to restore and reset as a new device. Great. Now I will need to spend 2 hours putting my apps back into folders because Apple hasn't figured out how to back up this setting yet.

I still think its a bug in the software. iPad 1 never did this. So maybe the last update or so did something.
