Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

I agree; I'm having the exact same issue.  It also doesn't always happen; but when it does, it's happened on EVERY WiFi network I have ever used.  It happens at home with my Linksys router.  It happens at work with my Cisco Access Point.  It happens at my brother's house with his Actiontec.  It happens on the road with my mobile hotspot.  It happens at Starbucks, McDonalds, Panera...

I have to say that this issue is not only specific to the iPad 2...My iPad V1 has still the same issue since the 4.3 upgrade....

I still have the intermittent Wifi deconnections....Really a shame for Apple...

Just got my iPad 2 16gb 3g and it has the same problem. It is getting annoying after a while. I'm tired of switching the wifi on/off every 10 minutes. After all this, is it a hardware problem or is it from the 'wonderful' iOs that is starting to get on my nerves?

This issue is a DNS issue. You need to do a STATIC confiuration of your Wireless Network. Make sure you know the DNS server of your provider. It will not be a pivate IP Address like 192.xx.x..x 172.x.x.x. 10.x.x.x it will be a FQDnumber for ATT its 68.94.156.1

    1. Turn off 3G

    2. on my Ipad I went to Settings, General, reset, networks, reset network settings.

    3. Went to Settings WIFI Networks, even if yours shows up choose other. Then Static

    4. My settings from my router is a network numbered 192.168.1.1 thru 192.168.1.253

    5. Set Static IP to known open address 192.168.1.69 Took the Subnet from the router settings 255.255.255.0

    6. Set the Router 192.168.1.254

    7. Set the DNS again from router info 68.94.156.1

Saved the setting opened up Safari and voila i was at a page.

    8. Enabled 3G data

    Hope this helps

Seanfromel,  that's completely unacceptable when you hop onto networks outside your home throughout the day.

Agreed - the notion of setting up your iPad2 into a static mode complete negates the very concept of having a mobile tablet device.

DESPITE AppleCare telling me yesterday that my replacement rig would not ship for another week.....well - it arrived today.  It sees all of the home networks and even caught wifi signals from the neighbors.  The trick will be to see just how long this lasts since the previous device (sitting behind me and waiting to be lobotomized and shipped back to Apple) also worked just fine out of the box and then began to have issues.

I will say that the fact that the iPad back-up/restore does NOT remember your folders is a a tad annoying.....but I actually could fire up the old rig and recall how I jhad set it up before.

Keeping my fingers crossed.  I'll let you know how this one works.

I got mine to work, in iPad2 settings/general/network/wifi I clicked the blue arrow to the right of my network name to get into the ip address settings for my network.  Not all of the lines for DHCP had address numbers.  So, I clicked Static, then clicked DHCP and the iPad2 seemed to communicate with the router and all lines filled with complete address numbers.  After that wifi connection not a problem!!!!  Hope that works and maybe the 4.3.3 patch will address this.

just got my ipad2 wifi 16gb working - in my home network. i found out that the ipad2 had problems with wpa2. so changed my router's wifi to wpa-personal, restarted router and ipad, reconnected to the wifi, done. i know, wpa is less secure than wpa2. but at least, i can fully use the device properly until apple releases a fix.

    This is not a solution.

When you choose WPA instead of WPA2 your connection speed drops down to 54mbps.

It is the same way if you just set your router to the B\G mode instead of B\G\N.

(some apple notes about it: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3361?viewlocale=en_US)

So, the problem seems to be exist only if 802.11N (WPA2 or no encryption) connection is used and operates at full speed.

Thanks Sean, it does seem to be a problem with DHCP not renewing properly and a static config worked for me. Not ideal but it's a stop gap until they fix it.

    Cheers,

    Seb.

seems like the problem is gone. I don't know if it's temporary, but I sure hope it isn't.

I changed the encryption protocol from WPA to WPA2 and it seems to be working for now. Just hope they find a fix for it soon.

For what it's worth, this problem was consistent for me when using a Belkin N+ router with any type of WPA encryption.  I wouldn't go more than 10-15 minutes without having to turn wifi on/off on the iPad to reconnect, even though the iPad still said I was connected up in the top left of the screen.  I switched to a D-Link DIR-655 router yesterday, updated the firmware, and enabled WPA2 encryption, and so far, I have not had the problem.

Also, I tried almost all of the various fixes people mentioned here with my Belkin N+ router, including assigning a static IP to my iPad, and none of them fixed the problem in my case.  The only "fixes" (or I guess they're better referred to as "work-arounds") that I didn't try were going into G only mode or using WEP encryption, since I didn't want to slow down my entire network b/c of one poorly designed device.
