Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

I am having same trouble.  I went to general settings and reset area.  Then reset network and enabled ipad2 on network.

Also, I set the lighting on ipad down.

So far it is working much better.

I think this is a power issue, none of router settings were changed, just renewed.  The lighting seems to be making a difference.

I think the wireless radio in ipad 2 may be subject to power issues.

I thought I'll add since I purchased a TP Link W8960N router ,my I Pad 2 has not dropped connection once in the last week,I went from wanting to throw it out the window to making it my best friend.

I can see there are different solutions to this issue, for me I am lucky to find a router the I pad seem to be compatible with, and it operates in wireless N mode.

I hope Apple sorts this out quickly, this can not be good for any company.

I've been following this thread since I first received an iPad 1st gen 32G from my brother this February.  Picked up free wifi, no problems.  When I tried to use it on my home network, it wouldn't connect even though the iPad showed wifi range (just like most the people on this thread).

Thanks to all the posts on this thread, especially FastBike's post of all the routers that work and don't work, I purchased a new D-Link 655 N+300 through Amazon (which I got in only 2 days!) and it works like a CHAMP now!!  I even tested for drops after "sleep" mode and after powering off and back on and it's still connected!!  Yay!

I hope everyone else finds success with their iPad issues too.

I Vivek I Arequipa, Peru and the only way I can connect to the web is via wifi. When I visit my local Statbucks I see many people using brand X computers using wifi. Not me! Until Apple comes up with a fix I have an eight hundred dollar paperweight on my desk and am not happy about it.

    I received my new ipad2 (64G WIFI, IOS 4.3.3 8J2) on May 28, 2011.

Unfortunately, I come up with the same issue of connecting to wifi. To fix this problem, I tried to update my router(TP-LINK WR941N) to the lastest firmware version, disable wireless security, mac address filter, set router to 802.11g only mode, reset my ipad2 to the default using itunes, using static IP address. But this seems no help. Ipad2 still can not connect to the wifi, sometimes it can connect but disconnect only 1 minute later.

I tried anthoer 2 router, D-LINK and NETGEAR, the same as my TP-LINK.

    It's really annoying!

What can i do to slove this problem?

I would try it with the iPad power-supply plugged in to see if this effects the performance of the wireless card in the iPad itself.

Perhaps you could change the channel that your wifi is operating on, but first you should learn what channels are currently being used by other devices in your vicinity. No idea how you do this on a Mac, but I know you can do it from the console in Windows with this command:

          netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid

If possible, try to choose a channel away from any others that are operating in your area. By that I mean that the channels overlap so opting for an adjacent channel is not the best strategy.  If channels 1 and 11 are being used, for example, then you should opt for 6 (piggy in the middle).

Another thing I did was not to use "auto channel select" in case the jumping from one channel to the next was leaving the iPad behind.

    Good luck

Hello, I'm having the same problems some of you are having here.

I have an iPad 2 WiFi 32 GB running iOS 4.3.3. My router is a ZyXEL X550N. Whenever I have WPA2-PSK security enabled my iPad 2 drops the Internet connection after being idle for about 5 minutes, but it remains connected to the WiFi network and has an assigned IP Address. As has been said here already, the only way to restart the Internet connection is to turn the WiFi off and back on.

If I remove the router security and leave the network open, the iPad doesn't present this problem. The Internet works immediately after being idle for long periods of time.

No other device in my house presents this issue when I enable WPA2-PSK security.

If anyone knows of a solution, perhaps changing some preferences in the router's options, I'd appreciate it very much. I can't leave my network unprotected because of the pesky neighbors.

Oh, and I've set the router to channel 11, and given the iPad a fixed internal IP, all to no avail. Regardless of what I do, if WPA2-PSK is enabled, the iPad will not regain Internet connection after being idle.

    Thanks!

Update your router to the latest manufacturer's firmware which can be found here: http://us.zyxel.com/Support/Download-Library-Result.aspx?mif=PDCA2008013

That's the first thing I did.

I will try FastGear's solution of setting a Re-Authentication interval, once I confirm that using a longer password doesn't work.

Hello everyone, sorry for the triple post, but I just wanted to chime in quickly and say that activating the router's security re-authentication to 60 seconds fixed the problem for me.

I now happily use the network with WPA2-PSK enabled and my iPad 2 has no problems with the Internet access.

Ikus this fix of mine worked OK at home (I still had the odd disconnect but a lot less than before) but because I obviously couldn't re configure the routers at the hot spots I used I retruned my iPAD.

Yes I understand the limitations of this solution, but I'm stuck with my iPad because it was a gift from a friend living in the USA (I'm in Venezuela). I have no AppleCare and returning it is virtually impossible.

I can only hope that Apple will address this issue in iOS 4.3.4 because I didn't have this problem with 4.3.2, which is the OS that came with the iPad. I doubt it's a hardware problem, even though it doesn't affect all iPads.

    Thanks BillyGerent!

I tried to change the channel that my wifi is operating on, channel 1,3,6,11 and 13. Furthermore, I close all wireless device in my home.

Now, my router has no security, working on 802.11g only mode. My Ipad2 still can not connect to the wifi.

The same as Ikus, i doubt it's a hardware problem of ipad2.
