Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

Here's my work around....turn the ipad2 upside down so that the home button is vat the top...no joke...it's mush faster now and hasn't dropped at all now.

My router is on the first floor and my iPad is used on the other side of the house on the second floor.  It must be related to the antenna design radiation pattern, etc.

Usually you'll want the access point up high, so I'm going to try to move the router upstairs.

My troubleshooting might have saved apple 1 return...

    What is this??? I have a brand New iPad 2 64g wifi+3g

    after 6hours.

TheWIFI just drop out.. no signal at all.

The main reason i bought this, its a SLIM Device easy to carry and it has a WIFI. In our country almost anywhere there is WIFI spots and there is no way i could ask them to CHANGE the bloody settings.

Is apple looking on this problem???

Just curious but do you know where the iPad is in relation to the access point?  Does it work when your right next to the access point?

Got the same issue as you all. Incredible that Apple after 48 pages of posts does not communicate to their stores and to the iPad users. I live in Switzerland and the Apple store has "Never" heard about it.

Reading through all posts i believe it is probably Ipad2 which is incompatible  with some of the wifi Standards. The post on page 43 re the ARC Cache seems to pinpoint the issue.

I will on trial and error try some new wireless hubs.

Same issues here - 16gb white.  you have to renew the lease every 8 hours, the connection is fine.  2wire 3800HGV-B router, N isn't an option.

would like to see apple address it but it will take another 48 pages and 100's of new threads for them to notice.

Update on wifi connection dropping issue.....

I went to the Genius Bar yesterday and they gave me a new iPad2 due to the fact that I tried all the possible resolutions to fix the problem. There was an issue with the first iPad. I got home and began using new device and started dropping connection but not as frequent as the first device did. I was really upset thinking I would have same issue again. I moved to a different location in my living room and looked at the wall and saw blinking green lights on the Home Plug that I totally forgot was plugged in for my husbands Roku box. I knew there could be problems from various appliances such as a microwave but had not even remembered the Home plug devices. I researched that the home plug can have RF leakage. I unplugged the Home Plug devices and my iPad has had rock solid wifi connection for hours. Check your house for devices that could cause interference.

Same issue here and still have it with my iPad 2 and my iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS (all on current IOS). I have the Verizon FIOS WiFi Access Point at home and have called Apple Support 2 times. In these calls I have done a full reset on my iPad but continued to have the issue. However, with these devices on other WiFi hotspots and access points I seem to not have a problem, therefore causing me to think the issue is with my AP or interference in my house (although I have no issues with wireless on my HP laptop and desktop, B&N Nook Color, or Xbox).

Recently, I reconfigured my AP to be 802.11 G only and on a different channel (which helped with my iPad performance) but I was still having disconnects. I then changed my security from WPA2 down to WPA and so far my disconnects have gone down significantly across all IOS devices. I have read that there could be some issues with IOS and some WPA versions so I am chalking this up to that for now.

I am considering buying a new AP (such as the Linksys E2500) but would be interested if anyone has had the same problems with that AP using WPA or WPA2??

the apple support doesnt know very well about the problem,

if they do, the ultimate fix would already be here

the fix that apple support provide, is not really solving problem, indeed :

    1. ipad 2 is designed optimally to be used with wifi 802.11 N

    2. ipad 2 with ios 4.3.3 and 4.3.2 have this issues mostly

    3. ipad with ios 4.3.1 doesnt have this wifi issues

    4. people are reporting this issues after they upgrade their firmware from 4.3.1 to the newer firmware or people who bought ipad with ios 4.3.2 or newer preinstalled.

    this is the ultimate fix:

downgrade your ipad firmware, until apple resolve this wifi issues

ask apple's technician to downgrade your ios (which i doubt they will do it)

    or downgrade it yourself

you can ask people wich have experience in downgrading ios 4.3.3 to 4.3.1

Hello chadfromgrapevine, I also had no issues with two other laptops using same network,  only the ipad2. I tried all of the fixes such as assiging static ip to the ipad2, went through 3 different routers, two modems, used all of apples recommendations for configuring the router, tried using guest network on two different routers, the static ip was outside the dhcp range, tried using the 2.4 ghz and the 5ghz networks, limited the MTU to 1492 from the 1500 default which did increase our speeds, tried moving all devices in the house to one network and put the iPad on the other band.  none of it worked. It came down to probably something faulty in the first iPad and then the interference from the home plug. I would highly suggest not changing your security from WPA. That leaves you very vulnerable if you are using WEP. I don't believe I recall seeing anyone having success with the iPad issue by downgrading security. This is very frustrating. I spent two months working on all these fixes. It could be the firmware upgrade too which

Seruman suggests. I have been connected all day with no wifi connection drops now that I located the interference problem.

I agree om your assessment. That's exactly what happened to my ipad2. The firmware upgrade was the culprit. I never had this experience before when it was first launch. I want to downgrade it in itune before by resetting to default, but it's too late; I had upgraded it twice.  Another upgrade from 4.3.3 might be a solution from Apple. I hope so.

I seem to be have the same problems as all of you. The range on my Wifi iPad 2 is seriously broken. I can only use it if the router is 6 feet away from the device. Have apple said they are going to fix this? There are far too many of us here complaining for them to ignore it.

I have the same issues described above. This is my second iPad 2. Traded out the first and while it seemed to work better initially it is now hardly working at all on wifi. I'm hoping Apple will acknowledge all of us reporting the issue and send out a fix.

Its no use posting here and expecting Apple to acknowledge your problem. If you want to get some focus on this issue then give Apple the feedback on this link. http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html.

You might also consider tipping off a couple of the sites that cover apple news such as this one http://www.engadget.com/ If you scroll to the bottom of engadget home page there is a link "Tip us on news". If enough people who are posting on this site do this WiFi Gate might get some attention from Apple.

There are several other sites such as http://www.theipadguru.com/ that cover iPad news as well.

Last night when I was reading this forum topic I had to restart my wifi by the time I got to the bottom of each page. I read something interesting by a networking guy about arp cache so I logged in to my router to look for it. I won't get into the specifics of my router because I think that part is irrelevant. I will say it's wireless N enabled. I never found my arp settings and I only changed and saved 1 setting. Every wireless router I have ever used has offered to broadcast on a specific channel this particular router was set to broadcast on channel 8. I changed this setting to auto, the end. Not one drop or false positive signal since. Try it out might save your sanity.

I have the problem of the ipad intermediantly asking for my wifi password again even though it is stored on the ipad.  I put in the correct password  but it pops up saying incorrect password and will not let me connect.   The blogs are full of people having the same issue.  I have 4.3.3 loaded now.  Any ideas why it still does this anyone?
