Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

There are no changes to WiFi or inactivity time to sleep in 4.3.4.

This release only contains a correction to a PDF file handling bug which could (and did) allow the execution of malicious code.

Many thanks for that Jim. How did you verify that? Have you inside information as an Apple employee?  I understand you may not wish to confirm or deny this?

BTW have you played with the pre-release beta of 4.3.5 yet - there seems to be a number of operation changes in this.

You can add me to the list of wifi problems. Got my ipad 2 a couple of months ago, and it worked fine, but about a month ago my wifi would drop out completely while using it. If I'd leave it be for 5-10 minutes, I could come back and have wifi again, but it would drop within minutes. If I restart  the wifi settings become grayed out, and simply says no wifi. My ipad 2 does this on ANY network I've tried, and is the only device I've ever had problems with on my network, let alone all the networks I commonly connect to. I am putting a call in to apple support tomorrow as there is no apple store anywhere near where I live.

I've read everything about this subject that I can find, and in this thread I see that many of you are saying this is a router issue. So... explain this...

My husband and I both have ipad 2s purchased in late March. We have NEVER had any connection problems (other than my connection not being as strong as his, even when in the same part of a room). We even changed over to U-Verse in mid-June and still experienced zero problems.

However, last week we went away for a few days and used airport wifi connections. Previous to this trip, we have both used wifi hot spots around town with absolutely no problems. However, now that we're back, we are BOTH experiencing these unable to connect/lost connection issues that others are reporting because the ip address keeps reverting over to a 169 address. When we enter in the correct address, our connections will hold as long as we DO NOT try to click on a link that takes us to another web address. When we do this, we have to reenter the correct address again. So tiresome and I'm getting really upset about it.

This does not make sense, especially since all of our laptops and phones connect just fine. I hesitate to change any of the settings on my router since ALL of our other important devices are working. I find it very hard to believe that this is not some sort of weird Safari/Apple issue. Something is inherently wrong within to have this many people having problems. It SHOULD NOT be our responsibility to purchase certain routers just to make sure we can use these devices. It should be the reverse, especially given the price of these units.

Looking forward to a solution that makes sense.

My 16GB WI_Fi drops the connection after the first use and I have to sign off and sign on to the WiFi in settings. This only started happening to me after the last OS update. What a mess!!!

I think you are right. Since the last software-firmware update (4.3.4) wifi disconnections at home have almost disappeared. But I am still experiencing a lot of intermittence at work.

But I have noticed that they are somehow application-related: if I use Skype I am sure it will disconnect every other minute while browsing rarely causes disconnections.

Movie streaming is painfully intermittent as is network speed testing while reading a forum runs smoothly.

Anyway I have just to wait few seconds and ignore the attempts to connect to the 3G network and to the wifi network for the connection to reappear (otherwise I have to reinput the WAP or WEP password).

My iPad1, iPhone, iPod, MacBook and PCs, in the meanwhile, stay connected rock-solid....

I just checked my Ipod touch 3rd gen. and it is doing the same thing the Ipad2 is doing. Jut drops the wifi after two or three minutes. My PC is working perfectly. Do you think we can get Apple to do anything about this?

I was experiencing wi-fi drops with my IPad 2 under 4.3.3 and 4.3.4 using my Airlink 101 router flashed with DD RWT. I upgraded to an RT-N56 and no more dropped WiFi.

So I need to change my router to work with Apple stuff that they screwed up? Isn't that a bit silly? My router, Ipad2 and Ipod Touch all worked perfectly in March April and May. Now neither Apple will stay connected. Maybe I should change my Laptop too.

What is being said is that your router may have developed a problem that only appears on certain devices. This is more likely since the problem has occurred on more than one Apple battery-operated device.

A quick solution might be to simply restart your router by removing power to it for 30 seconds and restarting it.

If you need more help please give the make, model, and version of the WiFi router that you have and how it is configured.

Hi new to all this forum stuff but I bought a I pad 2 from las Vegas in may this year. When I got it home to the UK I had the same problem as everyone on this thread. Pulling my hair out trying to sort it out. With no luck so I was at the point of returning it to apple in Westfield when a friend of mine who also had an I pad and the lucky git did not have any of the problems that we have. Suggested switching off the 3G service so operating on Wi fi alone whilst at home. hey presto I ran BBC I player for an hour with no drop outs previously I had only managed about 10 mins before it stopped. Although this worked for me and it may not work for everyone but if you have not tried it give it a go I cant hurt can it. Good luck I will let you know if it fails again. But really Apple you need to sort this out as a matter of priority. Make it number 1 on your fix list NOW.

I would say that restarting the router won't work. I did that and my Ipad2 still would not connect. It wasn't until I cut the power to the MODEM for 5 minutes that everything has worked. And I have had know issues. The promblem was that DHCP settings under WiFi were not reporting a Router Address or DNS Information. As Soon As I got the Modem up and running those values were updated and now works without problems. After all the reading here about the Ipad WiFi problems I have yet to see anyone mention the MODEM!

Well, I do believe I said I tried restarting the modem along with the router in my original post, but I may have fortten to add that part. It's true that, for me, power-cycling both router (D-Link DIR-655) and modem do resolve the issue, for a time. After a day or so, it has to be done again. This proceedure is more like taking Advil for a headache: it covers up the pain for awhile, but doesn't remove the problem.

I am using Apple Extreme Router and ENGenious Router with AT&T MODEM. Since I did the reboot my Ipad and Iphones continue to work. So Wifi Issues for me have been fixed. I do know that in SYSTEM/WiFi/ Your Network and look at it's settings under DHCP. If the router and DNS blocks are empty that is the problem. I had to cut the power to the modem and the routers for 5 minutes. Then bring the modem up then each router. That fixed all!

well, I'm glad to not be the only one having issue with the iPad2 WiFi reception. With enough annoyed users Apple might due something about it - if it's just software problem.

My observation: Reception *****. Considering it is a device that heavily relies in the wireless capabilites, it performs way below what I need. No matter what network, at home or on the road, my MacBook Pro connects like a gem while my iPad2 doesn't find the WiFi signal or connects at one bar (yawn).

I'm quite annoyed by this, especially because I bought an iPad w/o 3G. It's been a moth only, I'm considering going back to the Apple store.
