Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

I powered down the router and then back up. Still dropped so I powered down the modem and back up and it dropped the connection. So I took your advice and powered down the router, then the modem and waited for 5 minutes. Brought up the modem first and waited 3 minutes and then brought up the router. Then I reset my IPad. It has been hooked up for about 2 hours and works fine. I'll let you know tomorrow PM if it's still up. Thanks for your input.

Well, the connection just dropped out again. It lasted maybe three or four hours. I'd take this thing back but it's four months old. Worst $500.00 I ever spent.

If restarting the router makes the problem go away for a time this indicates that the router has a bug, perhaps a memory leak, or a process that shuts down. These issues are cleared by a restart and the router functions correctly until the bug reappears.

What is the make, model, and version of your router? Have you checked for a firmware update for your router?

I own 2 iPad 2s and they both have wifi connection problems with various routers. Had the original and it didn't seem bad. I get out my iPhone 4 sometimes when I get tired my iPad stuttering. I can usually get the info on my phone much quicker. No issues with the iPhone. Or my MacBook Pro. Or my Dell laptop. Or my Asus android tablet (flys by the iPad when surfing).  Or my apple tv. Or my HP Printer.

-- Just the iPads. Only the iPads. Nothing else. And there are those that want to say it's my router? Wow.

And me sending off to Apple and getting it back scratched up didn't do diddly.

It is not a router problem. Please for the love all that is holy stop trying to pin this Ipad2 WiFi rubbish on the routers.

I have literally HUNDREDS of these:

Cisco IOS Software, C1240 Software (C1240-K9W7-M), Version 12.4(25d)JA, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

cisco AIR-AP1242AG-A-K9   (PowerPCElvis) processor (revision B0) with 25590K/7168K bytes of memory.

    Processor board ID FTX

PowerPCElvis CPU at 262Mhz, revision number 0x0950

    Last reset from power-on

    1 FastEthernet interface

    2 802.11 Radio(s)

    32K bytes of flash-simulated non-volatile configuration memory.

    Part Number                          : 73-9925-03

    PCA Assembly Number                  : 800-26579-03

    PCA Revision Number                  : A0

Top Assembly Part Number             : 800-26804-01

    Top Revision Number                  : A0

    Product/Model Number                 : AIR-LAP1242AG-A-K9

    Configuration register is 0xF

    HUNDREDS!

The only device that is an issue is the Ipad2. Its the only thing that generates all these support tickets.

I even have one of these at home, and I have a Cisco Aironet AIR-RM1252G-A-K9 at home, at work we have quite a few of those, too.

I can do analysis on WiFi issues with counters for things you have never even heard of.

Network Interfaces: Radio-.G Detailed Status , Radio , RadioType , Radio AIR-APGA , Radio Serial Number , GAM , Radio Firmware Version ,  Receive Statistics , Total , Last Sec , TransmitStatistics , Total , Last Sec , Host KBytes Received , Host KBytes Sent ,Unicast Packets Received , Unicast Packets Sent , Unicast Packets To Host , UnicastPackets Sent By Host , Broadcast Packets Received , Broadcast Packets Sent ,Beacon Packets Received , Beacon Packets Sent , Broadcast Packets To Host ,none , none , Broadcast Packets By Host , Multicast Packets Received , MulticastPackets Sent , Multicasts Received By Host , Multicasts Sent By Host , MgmtPackets Received , Mgmt Packets Sent , RTS Received , RTS Transmitted ,Duplicate Frames , CTS Not Received , CRC Errors , Unicast Fragments Sent , WEPErrors , Retries , Buffer full , Packets With One Retry , Host Buffer Full , PacketsWith More Than One Retry , Header CRC Errors , Protocol Defers , Invalid Header, Energy Detect Defers , Length Invalid , Jammer Detected , IncompleteFragments , Packets Aged , Rx Concats , Tx Concats , Rate . Mbps Statistics ,Total , Last sec , Association Statistics , Total , Last sec

    I can also get information on packets for 1, 2, 5.5, 11, 6,9, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, 54 Mbps individually.

    Thats just the beginning.

The point is here, there is a big time bug with Ipad2 and WiFi. And its not in Ipad1, its not in MacBook Pro, its not in the 20-30 other types of devices in my networks.

    JUST THE IPAD2.

So please, I think the literal tome of complaints here should point out to Apple, which as 50,000 employees, that there is an issue with the Ipad2.

Oh, yeah, and not everyone has the Apple wireless base stations. In fact, 99.9% of of the worlds hotspots are on stuff like Xirrus, Aruba, Cisco, Meru, Trapeze, Colubris, etc.

It really does seem Apple is far more concerned with preventing JBs than getting its products to work properly with wireless. I guess we WiFi only ipad2 users are not considered important because we try to avoid the Racketeering of the 3G/4G providers to charge for every single bit transferred. (Which, as a side note to Apple, makes streaming stuff to these devices useless, so I would recommend strongly you use that Apple  influence to get the unlimited plans back into play or these things are just useless).

Ugh. This is a classic case of Icarus' wax wings.

Same here. I travel with the Air or the MBP. The ipad2 is finished for now.

Its not the router. Ignore people here trying to blame them. I have hundreds of wireless access points. Ipad2s are the only repeat offenders right now. They drop off. If you power cycle the ipad2, it comes back. Then after some time, it falls off again. All other devices, including the rest of the apple line up, work fine.

I would say that most of the people here are WiFi only that are complaning, at least you have the 3G to fall back on.

Its not the router. I have a hundred APs that prove this to be a typical, rather Windows/PC-esque control-alt-delete/reboot it fix. Your not fixing the issue, you cover it up by doing this.

I have a large, mostly G network, and can safely say that 4.3.4 didnt fix it.

Why dont you ask Apple to speak about this issue instead of grilling Jim. All of us are giving anectdotal and emperical evidence there is a severe issue with Ipad2s and WiFi.

And then you get mad at people for sharing this information in a collaboration with a large, 50,000 employee company worried about fixing JBs and not giving any form of respite or infomration to those with WiFi only Ipad2s.

Forget mentioning your router. It is not the router.

I can see this happening -

Go to a 5000 room hotel and tell them you want (nay, need) to use your ipad 2 on their premises. So could they

go to all their comms cabinets and power off all the WAPs and any routers they are using. Then pop down to the server room and power off the modem (only affects perhaps 2000 other users) and then go back and power on all the routers and WAPs throughout the establishment. Oh, and do this every 2 hours.

Apple is running the biggest con job I have seen in some time by not acknowledging the existenace of this problem. Of course some nationalites have themselves to blame because they are so litigous that nobody in their right mind would admit to something so wrong like this otherwise they will get sued with lots of bad publicity.

I've been having the same problems as everyone with WiFi not working after the iPad went into sleep mode.

But I may have found a solution. I set the side switch to act as screen orientation lock, locked the screen (wide screen format) and haven't had any problems with WiFi since. Maybe it was a coincidence, but I would appreciate it if anyone can confirm if it works for him too.

I've tried every reasonable suggestion on this site, including yours. The connection will not hold for more than a couple of hours. However, it will reconnect over a period of time, without help, and then drop again. I'm going to sell this piece of crap on Ebay.

For me, upgrading to 4.3.4 did nothing to solve the iPad 2 wifi issues. My workaround is to turn airplane mode on, which turns off 3G, then turn wifi back on inside airplane mode. No wifi problems until I switch airplane mode off, where wifi becomes molasses after a few minutes. So far, I have refused to mess with my router (Airport Extreme) so far, because the 15 other devices in my house work perfect, but I may try the channel setting if this goes much longer.
