Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

Alright. I have an iPad 2 WiFi 16GB and I always experience this issue. I thought I am the only one who enounter that problem. Can someone help me configure my router? I have a BUFFALO WCR-GN. On the router's clients list, it shows that the iPad is connected using 802.11n. Thanks in advanced.

Has anyone actually walked into an Apple store and told them the problems they're facing? If so how did you get on? I too have the same issues and have came to the same conclusions as others, that it is indeed the IPAD which is at fault and hopefully the firmware it's currently running!

I did and they told me that they had never heard of anyoneone else experiencing WIFI issues with their iPad 2. Anyhow, of course the issue did now replicate at the Genius bar (likely because the AP is not protected and probably right beside me), but they replaced it as a good will gesture. I had the same issue with the replacement unit and resolved it by adding another AP on the other side of my apt dedicated for the Ipad. I do loose wifi connectivity the moment it goes to sleep, so I wonder how someone could ever initiate a facetime call..

Just curious... Can anyone who is testing iOS 5 beta confirm if they are experiencing this as well? I am hopping it is resolved in the next release, as 4.3.3 just made this problem worse.

Well it's a worked around but not the magic solution at present. Hopefully if more take their machines back the geniuses might put two and two together. Will be popping into apple soon to see what they can come up with.

I took mine back after 9 months. As I used to be a certified wireless engineer they escalated my issue to the senior Apple engineers. When I first spoke to them about the issue they seemed well aware of the compatibility issues. At one stage one of the senior marketing guys from Australia who was involved in a conference call with myself and the Apple engineers in the States pointed out that Apple was not accepting responsibility for the problem. When I asked him point blank if Apple was denying the problem existed the senior engineer asked if he could have a quick off line chat with the marketing guy. When they came back on line we had no more nonsense denials.

The outcome was that I was given a full refund earlier this year. Senior Apple engineering staff are very much aware of this problem. At one stage they suggested I wait for a new firmware release to address the issue. I am happy to publish Apples correspondence to me on this issue.

I keep following this thread because I am just amazed by it.

I found that by turning WiFi off, turning airplane mode on and then switching WiFi back on fixed my problem of losing my wifi signal on my Ipad 2 every 10-15 minutes.  Very easy to fix and surprised that Apple did not have a solution to this probem

Didn't work on my Ipad2. I think Cnet needs to know about this problem.

Although based upon my initial experience, I thought that the upgrade from 4.3.3 to 4.3.4 had fixed my problem, it didn't.  I certainly does seem to have changed the way my iPad 2 behaves, however.  Although it still drops wi-fi signals, it seems to be able to recover more quickly without my doing anything.  It also now shows a diminishing signal (the number of bars drops) prior to losing the signal.  It seems clear to me that something has changed.  As matters now stand, the problem arises where the signal is not terribly strong.  At work, this means I can work around the problem by adding an extra WAP closer to my office.  At home, the signal is generally stronger (my WAP is pretty robust and centrally located), so it hasn't been a problem.  Unfortunately, this type of work-around doesn't work where I have to rely upon others to set up the wi-fi network (like at a hotel).  There, it is hit-or-miss.

The curious thing is that others seem to describe it as a sort of handshake problem--that is, the device sleeps and has the problem when it wakes up.  For me, it is unrelated to its waking up.  It really is just a matter of dropping signals that aren't all that strong in the first place.  Having said that, I don't think anyone still believes it is a problem with the WAPs/routers.  Clearly, wi-fi is just not adequately robust on these things, since my other wi-fi devices don't share the problem.

Based upon the change of behavior that occurred with the recent firmware upgrade, I am willing to believe this is a software problem.  For that reason, I continue to hope that Apple will slip a fix into the next upgrade.  (On the other hand, there is no way I will load the beta 5.0x.)

Still in shock about this wifi issue I will always in the future check the net for apple products before purchase. This iPad is going back to apple soon as I have waste time trying so many things!

I have tried lots of stuff. It's now become unbearable to use this iPad 2 I some times have to turn wifi off and on about every 30 seconds I can't be bothered to use it when it's like this =(

Think I will also be returning it

About a month ago I reported good results.  I thought I had things working

when I changed the wireless to a static address and changed to a different

channel.  Unfortunately that only lasted for a few days and the problems

returned.   Finally went to the Apple Store.  They gave us a new Ipad and it

seems to have better WiFi reception, but still drops the connection.

I'm a little reluctant to say whether my latest adjustment solves my

problems as it's only been a few days and you need a week or more to really

declare it solved.  I looked at other posts and one of the common problems

appears to be related to the NAT.  It seems the wireless and router are both

trying to keep track of the Ipad address (the wireless is supposed to just

pass the info onto the router).  For some reason the Ipad doesn't do as good

of a job as the other wireless devices sorting this out.  So I turned off

UPNP in my D-Link wireless.  The 2wire router is taking care of UPNP so no

    need to do it again.

I've had no drops for days now.  I won't know for sure until we take the

Ipad away from home and connect elsewhere.  It seemed in the past that

reconnecting the home wireless was particularly troublesome.

    Hope this helps someone.

When I take the iPad to the apple shop for a replacement do I restore the iPad so that every thing is deleted? I would not want all my info left on it
