Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

When your iPad started experiencing problems and your mates was fine on the same network did you compare WiFi setups on your iPads?

    Were they identical?

Were you both using the same DNS, etc?

Have you had your iPad replaced yet?

Roy their is a free App called IP Sanner Lite that you can get off the app store that may help you troubleshoot your WiFi Issues. It allows yo to do some simple network diagnostics directly from iPads.

Whoops typo that should have read 'IP Scanner Lite'.

You can also use apps like YFY Network Scanner to test Wifi signal strength and to diagnose WiFi networks. But to use ANY of the iPAD WiFi diagnostic apps you will need to jail break your iPAD first as Apple pulle YFY and all other WiFi diagnostic apps of the App store...their reason for doing this makes perfect sense to only one person in this Forum thread...the rest of you might chuckle.

My new iPad 2 had terrible performance and connections with wifi. I just updated to the latest ios and things work great now. Huge improvement.

I have been experiencing same issues with my iPad 2

Using DHCP it would not connect to my router at all

I decided to set up a static IP address on my wireless network specifically for the iPad using the MAC address of the ipad to allocate the IP address

Setting up the static IP on the iPad enabled my ipad to connect to the router but I could still not access the internet. What has solved the issue for me is inputting on the iPad side the DNS IP address exactly as set up in my modem/router.

So far so good, my iPad wifi is now connected fully to the internet

I had the same issue after upgrading to 4.3.3. iPad was intermittent and finally no connection. I returned it to the Apple store and got a new one. It's working but I have not upgraded to 4.3. I'm waiting for the update that states the issue is fixed before I upgrade again.  Really bad part is buying things from the App store is difficult without the upgrade. Apple needs to correct whatever issue there is. I paid way too much to go through this. Like everyone else, my Mac and iPhone connect perfectly.

Roy Ko, your problem is the same as mine. Simply go to Settings, WiFi, enter your home network configuration and set it to Fixed IP instead of DHCP. It should completely fix the connection problem at your home and this configuration needs to be done just once (and not everytime you connect at home).

We have the same configuration on our iPads: DHCP and no proxy

Mine is a 3G 64G (Verizon) and his (he has always been stingy...;) is a "pure" wifi, 32G.

I have bought mine in the States but I cannot use the cellular connection because here there are no CDMA networks. But it is a present for my daughter that is going to study at NYU...

My cousin's modem-router is a brand new, updated n-router (D-Link but I don't remember the model - WPA-PSK) while the one of mine which usually disconnects less is an "old" Belkin, "pure" g (WEP) that paradoxically shows the weaker signal. Two other routers of mine (that I use at work and in the apartment I rented where I work) are n routers and, even if the signal is stronger, compared to my Belkin, they disconnect frequently (WPA-PSK) These two are not configurable by the end user, they use a Broadcom 6358 chipset.

No speed improvement features activated on both mine and my cousin's, SSID is broadcasted and the channel has been chosen using INSSIDER among the less crowded ones, without any overlapping.

No difference at all using a static IP...

MarioPezzo suggest you download free app IP Scanner lite. Free, very simple to use and although it is very basic it can be quite informative. Wouldn't be surprised if you don't get a few surprises the first time you use it.

Done! But which kind of surprises should I expect?

I downloaded the full version and I found my active devices. The only thing is a very erratic ping to the router that goes from 2 to more than 1000 msec.

No disconnections, however, in the meanwhile.

    Dear Ranutso,

Thanks for the suggestion! As many times of trial and errors, I have finally solved the problems. My way was very similar to yours. What I did was to disable the dhcp service in my AP, and made it as a pure bridge mode AP.

The problem I figured out might be the routing table go disorder when updated the latest version of ios in my ipad, which made it didn't know how to send it traffic out. When I change the dhcp server, originally in AP, to the other one, which way is similar yours fix a ip which reconfirgure and fix the routing table. than everthing is perfect.

I am not good at ipad2, actually i am new user. If there is a tools checking the ip layer of osi infrastructure, it would be easier to debug.

It was a very very bad experience, especially i move from andriod to embrace apple os. to be honestly, I felt a little bit regretful. In my opinion, the network connection compatiblity is essential, I mean, now network, internet is everwhere. it is needed by everyone. It should not be a problem in apple, or should have been solved already. It shouldn't be a troulbe shown in the forum and have been discussing for long time. Apple, as I know, it is lucrative company by its items, ipod, iphone, and ipad.... having such problem is too rediculous, especially in the latest version of ios..... I am sorry for saying that. please forgive me, if i am worong...

Thanks for everyone help, and with my best regards to all of you.

    Roy

I think you are correct in saying that it is a ridiculous problem. Why should someone have to manipulate hardware settings to get an IPad to work? Apple is a very arrogant company.

The sort of surprised you might see is extra devices listed (i.e. your neighbours if they are on the same wireless channell and are in the same address range, Multiple DHCP servers, Intermittently no DHCP server, No DNS server).

Your router ping time is very erratic. If it is also your DHCP server this could cause some problems and of course it is also your relay to your DNS servers.  The first one is often higher but subsequent pings are typically less 10msec on a small network with only a single router hop to your Router. Do these response times change if you reset your router.

What are your ping times like to your DNS (Domain Name Server)?
