Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

I should also add to the above post i just posted...all three devices were always using different IP addresses - even when they were in the same wireless SSID/network. So DHCP wasn't the issue. Hope it all helps.

I have been struggling and frustrated by not being able to get Wi-Fi on my ipod-2 for the past week - nothing at all. This after normal Wi-Fi use from purchase for at least one week. Going to Settings the Wi-Fi shows as OFF and nothing I can do will change that. Everything else in my home office is working well on Wi-Fi. After reading all the comments on the the web site it looks as though Apple does not know what to do - could this be true?

First, this is a user-to-user technical support forum. No one from Apple is posting here. If you want help from Apple contact Apple Support. Phone numbers are here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

If you cannot turn on WiFi then you should try the steps given in the following document to see if you can solve this problem. Be aware that you may have a hardware problem:

iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim

By the way, posting in a long-winded grab bag thread like this is not a good way to get help. Start a new thread for your specific problem.

Add me to the list of iPad owners with wi-fi issues.  After not being able to connect at home, in work (unsecured connection), and a public hotspot (McDonald's) I exchanged the iPad.  I want to note that at home, we have 2 iPod Touches, a laptop, and netbook that connect with no problem.  In addition, I've never had a problem with my iPod Touch at work or any wi-fi hotspot.

I brought the 2nd iPad2 home and same problem.  It sees the network, but after entering the WEP key will not get a proper IP address so would not connect to the internet.  Most of the time the wi-fi signal isn't even showing - despite the fact that my Touch, literally right next to the iPad, is connected.

Brought iPad2 #2 in to work this morning, and it would not connect here either - again the Touch connected right away.

I may take the iPad to an Apple store this afternoon, but it seems to me there's a QC issue with the wi-fi hardware or software on the iPads.

Changing routers at home is one thing - not to mention a PITA.  Can't very well do anything about public wi-fi hotspots.  3G is a backup solution for me - I will not pay 3G fees just so I can connect at home or anywhere there's wi-fi available at no charge.

    I'm open to suggestions.

I am still connected with no drops since I replaced my router. It's been great being able to stay online. Thought I'd let you know.

Hopefully this helps someone else. I have posts in other threads about my issues connecting to wi-fi at home.

I logged in to my router, and at first just disabled the security. The iPad2 connected to the internet, no problem. It was using WEP, and I understand WPA2 is supposed to be more secure so re-enabled security with that instead.

Entered the new password into the iPad, and bingo! Problem solved. Apparently the iPad doesn't like WEP security. No matter what I did when the WEP security was enabled it would not connect nor would it hold the proper IP address.

I've already had it connect to 2 different public wi-fi spots so for now all is good.

What I have not done yet is upgrade the firmware - right now it's on 4.3.3, though iTunes has already indicated 4.3.5 is available. I'm ascared to update it now, LOL.

This issue appears quit prevalent. Obviously that is why I'm here. I've had wifi problems for a few weeks now and like most people was trying to blame the router. Don't believe that's it. I have a new router and both my cell and Mac have no problems picking up a strong signal. After the last few hours of having little to no signal I did the following and shazam a strong signal... Settings/General/Network/Reset Network settings. Hope this sticks

I had reset the network settings as well, but that didn't solve it for me.  For whatever reason my iPad didn't want to get an IP address with the WEP security.  WEP either has to be disabled or the router set to WPA2 instead.

This is really depressing. I find that this issue has been extant since Apple put out the iPad 1, threads going back over a year with no resolution.

Regarding the WEP and WEP2 commentaries. I have two locations and one of those with a resonably new NetGear n router doesn't even use a password because I am so remote from other people. Connection drops out on this router all the time, what a pain. Most recent firmware upgrade as well.

But my cable modem router from Time Warner in NYC never drops out. It is old too and has WEP password. It may well be a G router, which might be a solution. Hmmmm.......

Although my iPad 2 wifi is working fine this morning after last nights network reset ( I feel this is going to be a temporary fix), the problem arises when I return from work. The iPad doesn't appear to be able to connect to my home wireless. I have a feeling from what I've read this is an Apple problem and not a router one. Had the same trouble for two years with a first model of 350z that was eating up front tires. They never came up with a solution. Simply hoped the complainers would go away. Which they did,

I know this off topic and a shot in the dark but I know a Mark that resides in Jersey and is from Edmonton. Any chance?

I couldn't agree more about this being a problem on Apple's side.  Given the number of threads here and on other forums, it is not uncommon and it seems to be very random.  If I had problems with either iPod Touch that we use on our home wireless, the laptop, or netbook then I'd tend to agree that it had been my router.

But given the variety of different routers involved I'd have to say there's maybe a QC problem with Apple's wi-fi hardware.

After about a month of perfect connection to my home wifi (and some other wifi networks), i updated the OS on my iPad 2. Since then, my signal have been dropping constantly (at home, several other wifi sites a.o. McDonalds). At certain times i'm not even able to revive it, by going to the settings and selecting my network (again).

I called Apple on this issue, and despite many posts like this on the web, they claim this isn't a problem they recognize or have heard of before. (When referring to these posts, they responded  'on the web they also claim Elvis is alive'.) The problem is, I now owe my iPad 10 months. So not within 9 months, and i have to pay to get service. If it is hardware, they will repair it as it's within 12 months warranty, if it's software (and the OS is software), they won't fix it and I loose my money and will still be stuck with an iPad that isn't able to go on the web !

So @Thunderthighs 'Simply hoped the complainers would go away. Which they did.'  Please don't stop complaining

I have seen this before. A company says the problem is at your end and not enough people appear to be having the problem (which is obviously bug us) for them to be having a problem. Just stay persistent. They are just stalling until you go away while they try to determine a fix. If Apple admits they have a problem this would affect sales.

My Mac a cell pick up a strong signal at home but my iPad is very temperamental.
