Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

Try setting the group key update interval to zero in the wireless security software in your modem router.

I have done this in my DSL2730B modem router and my iPad2 has not dropped out all day.

Thanks for the suggestions!  I was able to get it to work by changing the security from WPA to WPA2 and making the encryption "AES only."  I left the auto channel on.

Add me to the list of people with this problem that it appears isn't a priority for Apple. Me and my wife both have iPad 2's and both started getting this problem when we upgraded to 4.3.3. She went up to 4.3.5 and still has the problem. I've tried assigning static IPs through DHCP and that did not work. I've also alternated between my 2.4ghz and 5ghz channels and it happens on both. This makes me EXTREMELY dissatisfied with my purchase because it renders my iPad 2 virtually useless.

I'm wondering if the current problems are all stemming from 4.3.3 because since then my Ipad is a colorful brick that does pretty much nothing else. No one really seems to care either.

I exchanged my first iPad after 1 day when it wouldn't connect to any wi-fi.  The exchanged unit has, knock on wood, been perfect with wi-fi after changing the security on my home router.  It is still on 4.3.3, although iTunes nags me about 4.3.5 everytime I connect.  I don't think it's an issue with 4.3.3.  My feeling is there is hardware issue, maybe a QC problem with the wi-fi chip or a component in the chip.

I  know this will sound too simple but I did this the other day and I've had perfect wifi reception since.

Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network Settings. I know the problem is somehow with the iPad because both my phone and Mac work perfectly. It would seem strange that Apple would make it only comparable with certain router settings that is why I have trouble seeing it as a router issue.

I've had the wi-fi intermittent loss connection problem since at the very first week I bought my iPad 2 (64GB 3G) last May.  I honestly don't think it has something to do with the current update.  At first, I just dealt with it.  Then, I finally it really sick of it and decided to visit this forum.

I follow one of the advices here (resetting network).  It's been at least 5 days now and have had not problems whatsoever with wi-fi losing it's connection to my Airport.  Usages is not limited to just checking my mail, but also surfing the web, visiting app stores or other sites.

    I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

My iPad was fine when I got it, but after updates it just started dropping wifi like crazy. At some points, it even says there is no wifi, and grays out the option in settings......

I'm at a loss, and my warranty period has been up a while. I have a useless tablet.

Mine worked great for about 3 weeks, then it just started acting up. I too think it is a hardware problem because it won't connect when my MacBook will.  And..... it absolutely would not connect at Starbucks the other day! It would show the ATT WiFi with full signal, and I would select it, but it would not do anything. Not even give me the Agreement page. I tried several time and could not get it to work. Weird thing is..... I was able to connect to my friend's iPhone.  I know it is different, but weird I could tether to her iPhone, but not connect to ATT wifi at Starbucks. Back at home, it is hit or miss. Mostly miss.

I tried the RESET in the General settings. Tried turning the airplane mode on and off again. This really *****, who can afford to have a $500 useless shiny brick lying around? It still keeps asking me to select or join a network. Asks for the password. Then says it cannot join. If I go practically sit right on top of my router it will finally connect! But if I leave the room, it drops the signal.

I've tried the "Reset Network Settings" on the iPad 2 a few times and haven't had any luck with that. I've tried every bit of troubleshooting Apple recommends and still have problems. It's not just my router because it happens when I try to tether to my phone also.

I tried your solution and it worked. Am grateful for the help, hope it lasts. I think mine started with the OS upgrade. Thanks

I'm glad to hear it. I have version 4.3.4 running on my iPad. After reading all these peoples problems I'm almost scared to hook it up to the computer it's working so well. Definitely not going to press any button that says there is a software upgrade. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I had the same issues at home (but not at work) with my ipad 2, i am using a d-link systems wireless router. i went into the router's admin page  and unchecked the "enable auto scan" and it seemed to have fixed it. still needs fixing on apple's side though.

I am having the exact same issue as you, cmlstudio. I have had my ipad since the end of April this year. Worked fine with ny FIOS at home and also FIOS at my sister's house. Traveling with it for the first time to FL, and it won't work at Starbucks. It says I am connected to their ATT network, but when I open Safari it tells me I am not connected, and also keeps telling me to sign up for a cellular plan. Not sure if this is all because of the recent updates or not. I have tried turning off and on, resetting things etc.  I was counting on this for internet access when I travel. Is it too late to return this, Apple?!?!?!?!

Your post calls for a reply as I, too, just spent a good hour at Starbucks today.  However, I never lost any connection with their wi-fi.  I was also @ Coffee Bean this morning before heading to work.  I had no issues whatsoever with my wi-fi connection.

It's been over 5 days since I've reset my network.  So far, it has worked flawlessly at home, Starbucks, Coffee Bean, gym and work.

I'm currently on iOS 4.3.5.  I purchased my iPad 2 (64GB 3G) last May.  A friend of mine who also purchased his last May (same 64GB 3G) has not had any problems whatsoever with wi-fi connections.
