Q: Intermittent Wifi issues with iPad 2 and WiFi

Greetings Community,

I recently purchased the iPad 2 16GB WiFi only device. One thing I noticed, the WiFi will only work for a short while, then completely stop. I have to disable and enable the wireless to get it working again. Anyone else having this issue? Any resolution? iOS version is 4.3.

Thanks.

Saumil.

    @Kroty:

Airport Extreme is my router.  The Airport Express is used to extend the network signal to a wider area.  It picks up the signal and retransmits it.

I still see occasional signal drops, and I shoudl have mentioned that.  But overall, the usability of my iPAD (and my wife iPAD1) are so much improved that I am celebrating that right now.

I said I thought the iPAD has a seaker antenna because I've never had this signal strength problem with my several other wifi devices.

    Good luck to you.

I had similar problems and solved them entirely by enabling BOTH TKIP and EAS encryption in the WPA settings under Encryption Algorithm.

Verizon FIOS 9100EM router. Set the encryption to TKIP and EAS. Also I set the Group Key Update Interval to 3600 seconds as it was set to only 900 from the factory.

I have not had any wifi connection issues since making these changes.

I have had so much connection issues. I have only connected to WiFi in the last 2 weeks about 10% of the time. Getting kind of upset at my new shiny paper weight.  But today I bought a brand new router. It has 2 speeds. A slow 2.4 GHZ and a faster 5 GHZ. The iPad 2 seems to like the faster speed and it has connected in the front room of my house! 2 rooms away from of the router. I had to practically sit right on top the old router to connect and if I walked more than 5 ft. away it dropped the connection. My old router was 6 years old. For now I am happy. It also connected in MacDonalds and Starbucks today. (It did not connect the last 2 visits to 2 different Starbucks) Strange, not connecting away from home has nothing to do with my home router, but what ever. For this minute....... I am doing a happy dance and not threatening to play frisbee with my new shiny iPad.

it seems I'm going to need a router to connect at home since airport/sharing on my imac isn't connecting my ipad.

can I ask you which router you bought? I'm hoping to not spend too much more for connectivity, since I've already given Apple a load of cash after they assured me I would be able to connect my ipad to my imac via airport/sharing with my imac hooked up to a modem with high speed cable. argh

I know I probably spent way too much, but I had the money and at this moment, I just wanted the headache and grief of my $500 brand new purchase NOT WORKING to go away! I also felt at the time that my problem at home may be that my router didn't have a strong enough signal??

I bought a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router. Model WNDR3700. It was $129

It has probably more bells and whistles than I will ever need. Speed 300 + 300, Secure connection, WiFi and Power on/off buttons, Parental Controls, Best Range, Multiplayer Gaming, USB Storage Access, Streaming Multimedia, Dual Band, and Gigabit. Says it's ideal for HD Video Streaming, and I am hoping the gigabit for faster wired connections will help the 2 old G4 iMacs run faster too.

I did not go with the Airport Extreme because I just was not certain about the 2 older iMacs. I am not knowledgeable about this stuff.  Trying to read the system requirements on the box, I thought my 2 desk top computers that are hard wired may be too old as they are running 10.4.11 (Tiger) Oh and the $179 price tag helped me shy away from it as well.

All I know is the iPad2 is connecting to the higher speed 5 Ghz.  You can assign each speed a network name and password, I gave them both the same name but put a "5" after the higher speed one so I would know which one the iPad preferred. No way was my old "g" router that powerful.

This netgear router has a 680 MHz powerful 32 bit processor.

All I know is I have not dropped my connection all night long. Whereas I could not connect here at my home all day long! I hope this helps you!

After perusing this discussions recent issues I think mine is not exactly the same.

I dont have any drops in my wifi signal .  The meter is always full or one below full depending on where in the house i am.

My problem is that I cant watch videos on the apps that I've installed so far... such as CNN or How Stuff Works.

The problem is that it is intermittent in the sense that sometimes I can watch 3-4 of them and then on the next one it says unable to play video !

To remedey this I disable and then enable the wifi on the ipad and sometimes this works sometimes it doesnt.

Aside from videos, sometimes i cant open certain web sites (even this discussion!) it says safari cant open the page because server wasnt found !

I know it is a wifi or modem problem because the above only happens when i'm at home.  In the office everything is perfect .

    I'm using a D-Link 2640U modem with wireless included.

I've scoured forums and tried most reasonable solutions, but the best seems to be wifi off on for a temp solution which is ridiculous.

It seems silly that I have to buy a new modem (mine is only 3 yrs old) with 5G to resolve this issue..... There's got to be simple setting to adjust !

    Ah patience is a virtue

there's that too. unfortunately, I bought my ipad in the city, but I live on an island, so not so easy to return.

I don't know what I am doing wrong, but I can't seem to establish a connection with airport/sharing from my imac. it shows up on my ipad that I'm connected with full bars, but there's no connecting to the internet. Is there something I might be doing wrong?

Your problem is lost in this unwieldy thread. It really has nothing to do with the original topic of this thread.

Start a new thread if you want a chance of getting help. Most forum members don't bother to keep up with threads like this.

    thanks.

I found the solution to my problem: connecting ipad2 to wifi via airport on imac should anyone else be looking for the solution, this is it: https://discussions.apple.com/message/15047989#15047989

Good advice, I have also had success in chaninging the key time out interval on routers to address this issue on multiple occassions. It doesn't solve the problem but it does seem to reduce how often it occurs.

However it is not advisable to reduce your security settings to either WPA or TKIP from WPA2 as WPA and TKIP keys are trivial to hack and can be done with free downloadable software.

This is going to seem really obvious. But I have had Wi Fi issues with my I Pad2 also. I have the Apple cover on my I Pad which is magnetic (isnt this a problem with shielding signals). I take off the cover and so far I have no problems with signal or drops outs for 2 days now playing BBC i Player and ITV Player with no signal problems. Maybe worth a try if you have a cover also. Mine was the red leather apple cover. Let me know if you manage to solve your problems too.

I found MY solution and maybe for some of you.

I uncecked encriptation in my router so now my router has no passwd and to make it better I did hide the SSID.

Now ipad2 when I wake up it works fine with no wifi issues  .

Is not good has no passwd but as I hide the SSID is the only way to make it works.
