Trying to import from Canon Legria FS306

I am relatively new to MacBook and also using a new camera but simply can't import from the camera to the MacBook using my USB connection.

The 'Import' option doesn't appear, and if I select 'Import from Camera' I see only my mugshot staring back at me from the computer's camera.

Grateful for any tips on doing what should be the simplest of tasks !!!

The FS300 is listed as being compatible with Apple, but the mpeg-2 files sure seem to be causing a lot of consternation.
I don't have one but a reviewer on Amazon said that plugging your camcorder into your mac and then dragging over the .mod files worked. Try it.

A suggestion on this thread said that dragging the files may not work, but if one goes to file-import movies, then iMovie will do the rest.

And here is one of Apple's support pages on the subject. One can put iMovie avchd lite in search window to get more.
