Find my iPad app won't locate my iPad??

I have the find my iPhone app on my iPhone 4 and when I try to locate my iPad it says "no location available"? I have a 32g iPad 2 wi-fi only. Does this app only locate iPads with 3G service on them? Because I didn't see anything that says that.

i also have the wifi only. find my iphone will work, not not fast and not exact. If you leave the app running for a long time, if the pad is on, and if it is connected to a wireless network, it will return a location related to wherever to wifi is regestered to. (not your house, I believe it is upstream from there - like where your ISP's servers are registered. ) In short - it is fairly close to worthless for a wifi model.

As Chris stated, the WiFi only model uses the location services routers information and my experience is the same as yours. I just located my iPad using Find My iPhone - it is sitting on my lap as I type this - but the app tells me it's in some guy's swimming pool about 6 houses away from my house. Not terribly accurate.

I installed - never use it - never let my iPad out of my sight when I am away from home with it.

These are generic fixes that actually work many times so give these a try.

Quit Find My iPhone by double tapping the home button to bring up the multitasking/recents tray at the bottom, hold down on any of the app icons in the tray until all the icons wiggle, then tap the minus sign in the corner to quit the the app. Try your app again.

Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button at the top of the iPad until the red slider appears, then slide to the right to power off the iPad. Turn the iPad on again by pressing the sleep button until the Apple logo appears. Once the iPad has fully rebooted, find your app, and tap the icon to relaunch.

Try a hard reset by pressing and holding down on the sleep button at the top of the iPad while holding down on the home button at the bottom, until the Apple logo appears and the iPad restarts. Launch the app again and see what happens.

Just to clear up some minor confusion (not specifically directed at you Demo!) that people seem to have.

The "Find my iPhone" app *does not* need to be installed on an iOS device for that device to be findable.

The "Find my iPhone" app is only for locating one iOS device from another iOS device.

For "Find my iPhone" to work (with or without the app installed) your "Find my iPhone" MobileMe account needs to configured in the Settings of the device as described here:

*iPhone Setup:* http://www.apple.com/iphone/find-my-iphone-setup/

*iPad Setup:* http://www.apple.com/ipad/find-my-ipad-setup/

*iPod touch Setup:* http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/find-my-ipodtouch-setup/

Thanks for the tip. I was misinformed. I just watched the video in the link that you provided. Not sure why I though it had to be installed, but now I know better. I guess I was confusing having to set up each device with having to install the app on each device.

So little time and still so much knowledge to be gained! 🙂

does the Map app show you correct location? If not then FindMyiPhone will not find it.

Actually, the location shown on the Map app will be the location shown in FindMyiPhone, even if the Map app location is incorrect.
If a location does not show up at all in the Map app, it (most likely) will not show up in FindMyiPhone.

Find my iPhone will only work for WiFI iPads IF the Wift router your iPad is connected to is registered with SkyHook.

iPads with WiFi don't have GPS in them, they can only therefore locate based on WiFi signals.
Even if an iPad is connected to a WiFi signal, unless the WiFi signal has its location registered you will not be able to get a location.

What you need to do is register your own WiFi network here :

This is not true. This person is just trying to get you to sign up for some crap.

After iOS 3.2, Apple devices use an Apple database. Apple quit using Skyhook with iOS 4.
And users don't need to register at Skyhook. Skyhook has gathered data from various sources without uses rs needing to actually register.

I am NOT trying to get people signed up to crap, and please do not say such things.

I have done some research on this subject, and there is plenty information around about this.

I have discovered that Apple no longer use Skyhook for iOS 4 devices, but it is still used for iOS 3 or older.
