This is not true. This person is just trying to get you to sign up for some crap.
Perhaps if you would read a bit, you would see that your statement is false.
It's false that you don't need to use Skyhook? Really? Funny I don't use it and my iPad works fine with Find my iPhone. -
Mar 13, 2011 12:57 PM in response to sw0rdfishby Chris CA,No it's false that, "This person is just trying to get you to sign up for some crap".Funny I don't use it and my iPad works fine with Find my iPhone.
But Skyhook probably already has your location. -

Ok fine, but I didn't sign up for it. Therefore you don't have to sign up for it. He may not have been trying to get him to sign up for 'crap', but he was wrong. -
Mar 13, 2011 1:14 PM in response to sw0rdfishby Ian Parkinson,Your apology is not accepted.
You may not have signed up, but your WiFi network will most probably have already been collected and is being used to provide your location.
If the OP is not getting a good location on his iPad then his WiFi is most probably NOT registered with location finding services like SkyHook and therefore I suggested her register it.
You on the other hand have provided not help whatsoever. -
Mar 13, 2011 1:41 PM in response to Ian Parkinsonby sw0rdfish,I'm not apologizing.
You show me where Apple says "register your Wifi connection to skyhook" then I'll consider it.
The point of the Find your iPhone app is os that you can find it, when you dont' know where it is... are you supposed to register EVERY WiFi you're on, incase you lose it?
And if someone steals it, are they supposed to register their network so you can find it?
Any time I've used it to show someone how it works, I've been on a variety of random networks, and it's always worked.
Registering it, while that may help, won't solve the problem as you dont have to register your network for it to work. Which is exactly what you said you HAVE to do. Therefore you're statement was false.
I'm done arguing about something to trivial. -
Mar 14, 2011 9:05 AM in response to sw0rdfishby JockoRocko,Stunning to me that people make such definitive statements without actually doing any research. swOrdfish, before telling people they are wrong do your homework. -
Mar 14, 2011 9:14 AM in response to JockoRockoby sw0rdfish,Do my homework on what exactly?
You Do Not Have To Sign Up For SkyHook FACT
That a definitive, knowledgeable statement. Until one of you shows me where Apple says you have to sign up for SkyHook, you're the ones wrong. I don't know why this is getting so much resistance.
I'm not saying they don't use back-end services, and their API hooks, but the whole point of those services is to make it easier on the consumer so you don't have to do stupid things like "register your Wifi"
Also lol @ making a new account just to troll someone. I'm not trying to be some smartass or start and argument here, it's a simple statement.
You Do Not Have To Sign Up For SkyHook for Find my iPad to work. -
Mar 14, 2011 1:24 PM in response to sw0rdfishby Julian Wright,You Do Not Have To Sign Up For SkyHook for Find my iPad to work.
You could do with learning how to read and understand. *Nobody said* you +"Have To Sign Up For SkyHook for Find my iPad to work"+
But, what was true, (before Apple started using their own location database), was that the location of wireless networks in your area, had to be logged in Skyhook's database for Find my iPhone/iPad to be able to correctly locate your device using WiFi.
If Skyhook had not already logged the location of any local networks in their database, Find my iPhone would not be able to locate WiFi only devices.
You could, optionally, help improve Skyhook's database (for the benefit of anyone in your area) by manually entering the location of your WiFi network into Skyhooks database. That is what was suggested by Ian Parkinson.
He didn't say you had to +"sign up"+ - just that you could register the location of your WiFi network in their database.
I did it for my location, as a test, as Find my iPhone could not locate my old iPod touch, and within a few weeks after Skyhooks database was updated Find my iPhone did work.I don't know why this is getting so much resistance.
Perhaps for the simple fact that you're claiming people said users have to +"sign up with Skyhook"+ and Ian was trying to get people +"to sign up for some crap"+ - when nobody said anything of the sort. -
Mar 14, 2011 1:23 PM in response to Julian Wrightby sw0rdfish,Now we're arguing symantics...
Sign up / Register that's not the point.
The point is that you don't NEED to do it and he said you did.
Not to mention that Apple doesn't even use that anymore... whatever I'm done.Ian Parkinson wrote:
What you need to do is register your own WiFi network here :
