I'd like to back up my iPad by right-click iPad in iTunes under Devices as advised in many tutorials but there is no "Back Up" option in the menu. Only "Restore from Backup" is available.
I'd appreciate any ideas how to back up my iPad.

Mac mini, iOS 4

Have you performed a sync previously? If you sync to iTunes on your computer a backup is created automatically and the you should get the option to backup the next time you connect your iPad

My device has been synced a heap of times over the last couple of month. Although only a initial backup dated June 2010 is offered if I select "Restore Back Up".

Were you never able to backup like you describe?
Have you tried rebooting your iPad and your computer and the trying to sync again?
Have you tried quitting and restarting iTunes?
Have you tried reinstalling iTunes as well?

If you know this stuff, so much the better, if not, give them a try.

Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button at the top of the iPad until the red slider appears, then slide to the right to power off the iPad. Turn the iPad on again by pressing the sleep button until the Apple logo appears. Once the iPad has fully rebooted, launch iTunes and try again.

Try a hard reset by pressing and holding down on the sleep button at the top of the iPad while holding down on the home button at the bottom, until the Apple logo appears and the iPad restarts. Launch iTunes, connect your iPad and see what happens.

The backup is created automatically when you sync ... I just don't get this one.

Launch iTunes on your computer - doesn't matter if the iPad is connected - click Preferences at the top under the iTunes name, click on Devices on the window that pops up - does it show the most recent backup as that June 2010 backup?

I'm not sure. I never cared about backup because I thought it is done automatically.

Have you tried rebooting your iPad and your computer and the trying to sync again?
    Yep

Have you tried quitting and restarting iTunes?
    Yep

Have you tried reinstalling iTunes as well?
I updated iTunes to the latest version yesterday. No difference.

I did a hard reset. No difference.

At the preferences pane the the most recent backup is shown as of June 2010. It's located on MacOS at ../Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup.

I must confess that I don't know what to do next. I appreciate any hint ...

When you open iTunes on your computer, if you select preferences at the top of the menu, the window that pops up lists-General-Playback-Sharing-Store-Parental-Devices-Advanced. If you select devices -that also shows the June 2010 backup as well? It would have to if that's what the Mobile Sync folder shows but now I'm desperate for a solution.

I'm trying with every fiber of my being and as much as my tiny brain will allow. I did notice something that you changed something in your profile. ... Now showing iPhone iOS 3.1.3 - previously showed iOS 4. You are running iOS 4.2 at least on your iPad?

The one and only thing I can think of to try is to delete that old backup, sync again and then try to just backup the original way that you wanted to .... Another thought ... you don't have restrictions enabled on your iPad do you? I have no idea if this would effect backups but from June 2010 ... something bizarre is going on.

When I select "devices" a backup as of June 2010 is shown.

I recently installed iOS 4.3 from the scratch and afterwards became aware of the problem when I tried to recover it from a previous (old) backup. Previous version was 4.2 (4.2.1? I'm not sure).

Now I tried to delete my backup and sync again. Unfortunately the problem still exists.

There are no restrictions enabled on my iPad.

Really bizarre. Are there any other tools (except iTunes) available to backup my iPad?

Well at least the two match, your Mobile Sync back up folder and what the iTunes preferences are showing. However, it defies all logic and reason. A new backup is created every single time you sync. It IS ceased automatically by iTunes.

You mean you tried to restore from a backup that was running 4.3 ?

Not that I have any more ideas but if you now select the backup from the preferences in iTunes, does it still show June 2010 as the backup?

    Desperation - grasping at straws!

No. The only way to back up is by syncing your iPad to iTunes on your computer.

I'm reaching for anything now. Is the date correct on your Mac Mini in the system preferences? If not, I wonder if that could be causing a conflict.

Have you ever run the disk utility in the Utilities Folder in Applications on your Mac? You run the Disk Utility program and try verifying the hard disk, repairing the hard disk, verify and repair the disk permissions. Maybe there is something out of whack on your computer. Sometimes a fragmented disk can cause weird goings on. But this one is really, really weird. Something may be corrupt somewhere in your system or on the iPad. If you do run Disk Utility, reboot when you are done before you try another sync.

None of this makes sense. I know you are baffled and I am as well. I just don't know what else to suggest except a call to Apple Support. Stay in touch and post back and in the meantime, if I can think of anything else I will post.

Thanks a lot for your various hints. I tried several of them. Some hours later I tried to sync the iPad using another Mac user. And big surprise ... the backup option was available and I was able to perform a backup. Hence it must be problem related to my user profile. Maybe the the best solution is to uninstall iTunes. Any idea which folders must be deleted to start from the scratch?

Any new info on this? I am trying to transfer my iPad to my iPad 2. The standard way to do this is to back up the old one, then restore the new one from that backup. But "back up" is not available as an option in iTunes on my account (which has administrative authority).

It IS available from a separate administrative account on my machine.

To set up the new iPad, here's what I did:
    1) switch to my superuser account, connect the old ipad, and do a backup
    2) open a terminal window and switch to su
    3) cp -R /Users/<su name>/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/* /Users/<normalusername>/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
    4) log out of su account and log into my normal account
    5) plug in the iPad2, open iTunes, and right click on the device
    6) select restore and restore from the (now visible) backup

That works. but surely it's more convoluted than necessary.

I suspect there is a permissions problem somewhere.

    just found a solution,
look for the file iTunesPrefs.xml and look for

    <key>DeviceBackupsDisabled</key>
    <integer>0</integer>

    set the integer to 0
and the backup option is back

Maybe the the best solution is to uninstall iTunes.

    Don't do that.
    Select the iPad in iTunes.
    Right click - Reset warnings.
    Or iTunes prefs > Advanced.
Reset all dialog warnings: Reset warnings.

    Also, iTunes prefs > Devices.
Uncheck *Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from automatically syncing* . Pretty sure this being checked will prevent it from backing up.

    same problem with windows...

found it, must have been a corrupt preferences file located in user/appdata/apple computer/roaming/itunes

followed this article and by removing that folder and reopening itunes, it backed up just fine!
