All audiobooks do not show up in home sharing

I have iTunes 10.2.1 on my iMac and my MacBook Pro, as well as Mac OS 10.6.6. I have updated my iPhone 4 and iPad 1 to iOS 4.3. I was excited to be able to use Home Sharing on all devices now, because I have a huge iTunes library that wouldn't fit on one device.

Here is the problem. I checked to share everything in my library, no exclusions. Everything does show up perfectly to share across all devices, except my audiobooks. The audiobooks which I loaded onto iTunes from CDs plus the few I purchased from iTunes do show up for sharing. However, the books I purchased from Audible.com do not "share" with my laptop, iPhone nor iPad.

All the (more than 100) audible.com books automatically appear in my iTunes library host computer, under
Books, but no audible.com audiobooks will share. If I make a playlist of audible.com books, it is blank on the MacBook, iPhone and iPad. I can drag audible.com books to different devices and they show up and play perfectly. I can use the audible.com app on the other devices perfectly, as well.

Does anyone know why these books are in my main library but will not share?

MacBookPro 2.4 GHz, 4GB RAM, 256GB SolidStateDrive,, Mac OS X (10.6.6), Intel iMac +500GB ext.HD, 64GB iPad, 32GB iPodTouch, 32GB iPhone 4

I have the same bizarre problem. The reason seems to be that if the "media type" is set to 'Audiobook' Apple assumes it's not 100% yours. Note, this is not "Genre" 'Audiobook' which is a different thing. Media type puts your files into the iTunes media ... Audiobooks folder.

So, note: this folder is only for stuff you don't own 100% (i.e. not CD audiobooks). Use "Genre" 'Audiobooks' and you'll be able to Homeshare. Could iTunes get any worse? It seems unlikely.

Just in case anyone else has this problem, here is what Apple replied to me:

"Dear Carol,

Greetings from Apple iTunes Customer Support. I am Sayantan and I am glad to assist you today.

I understand you are unable to share audio books using home sharing. I know how upsetting it can be. I will help you with this.

Unfortunately, you cannot share iTunes Store Audio Books, Audible spoken word content, or QuickTime sound files.

In accordance with iTunes Store policy, you may share the music in your library and playlists with up to five other computers, provided the following conditions are met:

1. Your computer is using Mac OS X version 10.4.11 or later, Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7.

2. The other computers are on the same local area network as your computer, in the same subnet.

To share a song in a password-protected shared library or playlist, you will need to enter a password.

To share a song that was purchased using an iTunes Store account that is not authorized on the computer you are using, you will need to enter the Apple ID and password with which the song was purchased.

You can share MP3, AIFF, WAV, AAC, and radio station links, but you cannot share iTunes Store Audio Books, Audible spoken word content, or QuickTime sound files.

To prevent other computers on your network from seeing or listening to songs in your library or playlists, turn off music sharing.

More detailed instructions about sharing music may be found in the Help menu. In iTunes, select iTunes Help from the Help menu. Click "Contents," type "sharing" (without quotes) in the search box, and press Enter. To read more about one of the topics that appears, double-click it.

Carol, thank you for being a valued customer, your satisfaction is of the utmost importance. If you have further queries please write back to me. I will be happy to help you. Have a great day!

Sincerely,

Sayantan
iTunes Store Customer Support"
