Silence switch doesn't affect iPhone alarm

It was, of course, at the most dramatic point in the play we were watching that my boyfriend's phone started blaring Disneyland's "Tiki tiki tiki tiki tiki room" song. Mortified, he fumbles in his pocket and mashes at the screen. Tragically he'd only achieved the "snooze" function, and when the song reoccured 10 minutes later, he hurriedly turned the phone off. Mercifully the actors hadn't reacted, but audience members around us were less than amused. After the show, we examine his phone, and the silent toggle is definitely on. We test it: calls are silent, texts are silent, alarm is not.

So far all the information I've been able to find has been in praise of this feature, allowing one to make sure it is your alarm that wakes you up and not an unwanted phone call. Seriously though, is there a way to fix this? If I want the ringer off, I'll turn the ringer off, but my boyfriend and I both work in theatre: when I need my phone silent, it needs to be silent, and turning it all the way off during work isn't always an option.

In short: is there a fix that doesn't involve toggling each individual alarm off at the beginning of the silent period and back on at the end?

Thanks. I don't mean to sound so ranty, but I find this pretty unbelievable.

It's not really a matter of easy or hard, I just have a daily recurring alarm to take meds, and if I happen to be in a movie at that time, let's hope I've remembered to turn it off, and if I do, let's hope I remember to turn it back on.

I've just never had a phone before where silent didn't mean silent. Some warning would have been nice...

I'm with you on this. Silent should mean silent, imho. As for hearing alarms when in silent mode, that's what vibrate is for.

My workaround is to have my phone in silent mode at all times and I dial the ringer volume down to zero. This way, calls, alarms, and calendar alerts (only three I use) all vibrate. This works for me since I carry my phone in my pocket and can feel it vibrate.

If I'm going into a theatre or other critical-to-be-silent place, I switch the phone to airplane mode to block incoming calls and texts. Alarms will still vibrate. If the meeting is super critical (we are delivering a proposal presentation to a prospective client), the phone goes off.

FWIW, I've had to work out how to handle ringing, alerts, alarms etc. with every make of phone I've had. iPhone isn't the only one with this type of behavior. Hope this helps.

Actually, yes, it can be that hard. You could have hundreds on events in your cal, any of which could be set to alert during the time in question. When I set an event for my anniversary dinner, with an alert for a month before to remind me to buy a card, do I know when i set the alert that that I might be in a movie? Not likely!

AFAIK there's no way to search events by "alert date/time" either.
