iPad 2 crashes, restarts on its own

After restoring my back up though iTunes on a Win 7 machine, the iPad 2 consistently crashes, resets on its own, reverts to home screen when starting an app, and generally does things the iPad never did. After one of times I tried to reset (off switch & home button), it locked up with the silver apple, the timing circle and two purple lines (image posted on ipadforum) and remained that way until I pressed/ held the off switch & home button again. Anyone else with these issues?

I am having this exact problem.

Seems to be happening the most after I use Facetime or Photobooth. Right now, when I try to open ANY app, it crashes, locks or freezes. I have tried many things including a hard restart. I am very frustrated!!

I am trying to restore it now, thru iTunes. Waiting for the giant "iPad software update" to download, then I'm going to restore it. I hope this works, or I'll be at the genius bar tomorrow.

Try a System Reset:
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.

A System Reset does not remove any apps, music, movies, etc. nor does it cause any settings to revert back to default.

Also, you might wish to download the iPad-2 User Guide. Pay special attention to page 162. Note that this Guide also applies to the iPad-1 with IOS 4.3 except for those functions that are not supported by the hardware.

Finally, a less thorough version of the Guide is included as a Safari bookmark and a more thorough version of the Guide can be downloaded at no charge via iBooks.

Restored last night and it still crashes. I'm not very computer knowledgeable but it seems programs which are video intensive crash it or degrade its capabilities to the point that simple actions, like going to the settings screen, do not work. Facetime, Midnight HD, and Plants vs. Zombies HD will crash the device. There may well be others but I haven't had the device long enough to figure out more and haven't been able to keep it running in any case. Now to the Genius bar or just return it and wait for one out of a later production run?

Just wanted to give an update.

After a full restore thru iTunes, the iPad 2 continued to crash.

I visited the Apple store and the Genius tried to restore at the Genius bar. It failed to restore! He deemed it defective and swapped me for a new one. He said I was the first return (to that store), and that Apple would want to study it.

Incidentally, the Apple employees were telling everyone they were sold out. My replacement came from "a private stock" for defects. I'm glad they were able to help.

Great customer service (thanks Luke "Apple Genius")!

We had the same problem. It would sometime freeze up, sometimes the apps would just open for a second then close, sometimes it would re-start itself. After a few phone calls to apple and restoring it three times, they arranged to replace it at the local apple store even though I did not buy it there. I guess they hold some back for exchanges. I'm unhappy that this one had a problem, but the customer service was great and I am going to exchage it tomorrow.

Recap and update--Upgraded to latest iTunes before initially connecting it; installed backed up settings from previous iPad; crashed/reset frequently. Did a complete system restore, installed backed up settings from previous iPad; crashed/reset LESS frequently but still crashed/reset in a repeatable manner. Box it up, let it sit, did not reconnect it to a computer, then can't get it to crash at Apple store. Genius does confirm the shut down events so I'm not loco (cool diagnostic software btw). Take it home and, you guessed it, it reset in the middle of an app. Should I wait a little while for iOS and app updates?

The latest - complete reset/ erase; setup as new iPad; installed apps; first app used SiriusXM, played, quit unexpectedly, went from app initializing to home screen, then started again; later system froze on home screen, had to sys reset to start; later froze again, stuck on silver apple, sys reset. Off to Genius Bar.

Genius Bar offered a replacement but refused to replace a white model with a black model. Like for like is the policy. Which generally makes sense but I was a little put off by it given this product hasn't been on the market a week and I went out of my way to buy it on day one. So it goes. Ended up returning the iPad 2 to the military PX where I purchased it and might later purchase another. Definitely won't go out of my way to do so as this has been a lot of effort for no reward.

I am having these same problems. Soft resets where the apple logo shows on a black screen while using an app and then comes back after about 30 seconds. Also, problem where opening any app closes immediately. Also, Safari closes on it's own quite often.

Do these problems occur on the original iPad with iOS 4.3?

This is my first Apple product and I am really surprised by all of the issues.

I have an iPad 2, 64GB, AT&T, white which has twice reset itself. Both times just set it down and happened to notice the whote apple reboot logo. Came back to life quickly which I attribute more to the speed of the processor than to it being a different kind of reboot.

Since I am clearly not the only one noting this I am not going to rush to the Apple Store to get a replacement, will see if a software update fixes it soon and to make sure that there's not a grand recall about to happen if this is a hardware problem! I might return it in any case since I am seeing some light leakage around the edge of the screen especially with a dark screen such as with a Netflix movie.

This is especially disconcerting because I use it in the airplane for charts.
