Hi Ecruz976-
I'm an OS9 novice myself, not to mention stuck on dialup AND terminally lazy...so i'm all about the easy way to do things.
Hit Ebay and Search for MacGold. This wonderful little disk has Windows Media Player7,Realplayer8,Quicktime6 for your pleasure...not to mention Itunes,Limewire,Internet Explorer and Outlook Express,Netscape7,Yahoo messenger, firmware and OS updates,third-party updates for common software such as Appleworks(must have the original installed of course)and five or six dozen more things I can't recall right now.
My copy was about $9 including shipping...I think several Ebay stores carry it periodically, and for all I know there might be other places online that carry it as well.Everything i've installed from the MacGold disk runs like Rolls-Royce on my G3.
Hope this helps.

Prior to downloading WMP, make sure you have no older versions on your system.

After installing WMP, you must increase it's preferred memory between 200%-300% (depending on how much real RAM you have).
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=18278 Mac OS: Assigning More Memory to an Application Program.
The same directions are also in the OS Mac Help Menu.

Then you must rebuild your desktop. Use Techtool Lite or Trash*Desktop (TD may delete Finder comments )to rebuild your desktop w/extensions off. Does a better job than manually & you avoid all the finger gymnatics. You just have to hold down the shift key to shut off extensions.
Restart to turn the extensions back on again.

If you want to rebuild manually, see KB article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=10182 Rebuilding Desktop File and Icon Recovery.

Good luck
