Scratches on iPad 2 from smart cover

I have ordered a smart cover that I should receive in a few days. I have read in a few places that the cover leaves scuff marks on the left side of the iPad. Has anyone used one and doesn't have scratches? Or should I expect and accept that the product will leave scratches?

Thanks,
Zach

I just got home from the Apple Store to look at the Smart Covers. The sales person I talked to wasn't aware of any problems with the Smart Cover scratching the iPad 2. He brought out an iPad with a Smart Cover for me to see and after I played with it a bit, I removed the cover and sure enough, there was a scuff mark on the iPad where one the hinges attaches.

He admitted that it must be a potential issue. How could he deny it now after all. In fairness, I'm sure that demo model gets rougher treatment than we would most likely put ours through but it is definitely something to take note of.

Needless to say, I walked out without one and going to shop for a third party case now.

After one week of use, I have no screeches on my screen from the Smart Cover. Looking closely at how the Smart Screen comes in contact with the iPad, the hinges don't touch the screen or even comes in contact with it, open or closed.

The iPad you saw at the Apple store are touched by thousands of people. More than likely you saw miss use of the unit and Smart Cover.

An update on the Smart Cover rubbing against my iPad. After the second Smart Cover started to show signs of the metal being rubbed of its hinges I took the covers and iPad to the Apple Store. None of my friends have had any problems and I haven't seen any other reports like mine. So the Apple Store was awesome, the exchanged the iPad and both Smart Covers and now I can see the difference. It looks like the first iPad might have had some slight back case anomaly or the magnets might have been misaligned which caused the rubbing. The new iPad and Smart Covers aren't hitting each out so things look good.

Anyway, I think my iPad was a fluke (Apple Store hadn't seen any problems come in). I highly recommend the Smart Covers. I love mine and now that they attach correctly I am a very happy customer. Plus, Apple's customer support at the store was amazing as usual.

Thanks

I'm waiting for this case to ship (see link below), so it will cover the back while still being able to use the smart cover. The smart cover is very nice and to date I have no marks on my case or screen from using it.

While I'm waiting for the case to come in I put 4 little Silicone feet on the back which I will peel off when the case comes in.

Thanks, dakine808! Given your response and lack of any other responses, I am guessing my concerns are valid. I will get something like what you've suggested. Are you sure these two (Smart Case and Microshell) backing can both work in concert? I am also looking at this back protection: http://www.amazon.com/ZAGG-invisibleSHIELD-Apple-iPad-Full/dp/B0038BW3W6/ref=sr14?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1300925421&sr=1-4

That is exactly what was happening with my iPad and Smart Cover. Check your Smart Cover hinge where it contacts your iPad when folded back and see if you notice the metal starting to get dull. I got a new iPad and new Smart Cover and it has started happening again (I thought it was something specific to the first iPad 2). I finally just put some scotch tape on the iPad where the rubbing occurs.

I bought a smart cover a couple days after I recieved the Ipad 2 in the mail. It works great, but yesterday I noticed for the first time some small scraches on the surface of the screen. Looking closer, there are a lot of small scratches down in the lower left corner close to where the smart cover attaches. I've had an Ipad 1 for aover 6 months with a 3rd party cover with no scratches whatsoever on it. But after less than 2 weeks of using the smart cover, I'm getting cosmetic scratches on the surface of the Ipad...not cool. I've been careful with it and it has only had the cover on there so it must be the cover that is causing the scratches. My guess it is the sharp edge where the magnetic bar connects to the hinges and when I reattach the cover after having it off for a little while, it slides along the top of the glass and scratches it as it moves into place on the side of the ipad. Anyway... though a nifty innovation, I can't afford to get my screen all scratched up so I'm not going to use it anymore. $40 down the drain.
