Charging iPad 2 using USB ports

This is my first iPad and I recently purchased the iPad2 on Friday and have noticed that the iPad will not charge when plugged into my PC or will not charge using a powered USB port. Is the iPad only charged when plugged directly into a wall socket? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Your experience is normal. Most USB ports on PCs and powered hubs do not charge the iPad when the iPad is awake. It will charge slowly when the iPad is asleep or off. This is because the screen/backlight usies a lot of power. Most USB ports are limited to 1/2 amp (500 ma) while the supplied iPad wall charger is 2 amps.

It will only charge at a decent rate when connected to the wall charger due to its power requirements (which is why it's charger is twice as powerful as that which comes with the iPhone or iPod Touch). It might charge slowly if attached to your computer's USB port, but the wall charger is the best way to charge it.

Thanks all, do you know if there is an extended power cord that Apple sells. I mean the cord they give you is not very long, and if I want to charge the iPad at work I would need at least 10 feet cord. But i appreciate all the advice, sorry I just thought the iPad would work similar to the other devices.

You can plug the walL charger into a 3 dollar extension cord or a power strip. Or you can use a USB extention between the charging block and the short apple-supplied cord.

There is this one on the Apple store http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1826ZM/A?fnode=MTc0MjU4NjE&mco=MTg3MDQzOTM - but it would be cheaper just to get an ordinary extension cable to go between the wall socket and the iPad charger.

Did Apple change something on the iPad 2 charger? I had a car charger that would charge my iPad but it will not charge my iPad 2. However, my Wagan 150 watt slim AC inverter's USB port will charge the iPad 2.

Does anybody know of a product that can charge an iPad or iPad 2 and connect at USB 2.0 data rate via Cat5/6 solution?

I've found various that will connect up to 100m at USB 2.0 data rates, but this discussion worries me that they wont be able to charge the unit. I know of cables that will combine power from (2) USB ports, will (2) 500ma ports combined be able to do the job, or do I need to daisy chain these cables to combine power from (4) ports?

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

My objective is to permanently mount the iPad or iPad2 in the wall utilizing it as an advanced automation Crestron touch panel. If someone knows of a all-in-one wall dock w/ power and connectivity that would also be a viable option. Currently I'm planning to use the following products to mount the panel:

in order to charge the ipad 2 on the pc usb ports, you'll need a very high powered usb port in order to do that but also the ipad will stil charge (but slowly) even when it says "Not Charging"
