How to pay Month to Month with the Verizon iPad 2??

Hi,

I used to have an AT&T iPad 1 and would only enable the data plan when I need it. In order to avoid the plan being renewed automatically I would just cancel it after activating it, and continue using it till the end of the month or till I ran out of data. I just tried the same with my new Verizon iPad 2 and it actually canceled the plan entirely and cut off from the internet. I even received an email saying that any remaining data would be lost.

I spoke to the VZ Mobile Data Support group for over 1 hr, and they were unable to reactivate my account but gave me the $20 back. However they were unable to satisfactory answer my question about automatic renewal. If you look on the *Cellular Data Account* setup screen, it says *Recurring Domestic Plan Options*.

My question is how can I avoid the plan to automatically renew?

Let me follow up on this question as I'm new to the 3G IPad 2.

I'm also with Verizon and today set up my cellular data account and was immediately charged $20.

1: does that $20 get me a full month of use, until April 15th, or just the remainder of March?

2: will the account automatically renew each month and charge me the $20 or will it only charge me if I use it?

Many thanks!

OK, I turn it off in my iPad and that will keep my usage low. Got that. But if I don't want to be charged for it I have to actually cancel the subscription.

Which means 2 things, I'm guessing:

1: that when I want to use the 3G coverage I have to go through the set up process

2: If I don't cancel the subscription I will be automatically charged the monthly fee.

Correct or not? Thanks for everyones help.

I've been following this thread because I just purchased an iPad 2 with Verizon 3G and curious to how this all works. My friend who has had a iPad 3G uses this strategy to manage the account from automatically renewing each month. He uses a virtual credit card number (like those from Citibank) that are only good for one-month. When they go to auto renew his plan, the credit card doesn't work, they send him an email notice, then he either enters a new virtual credit card number or turns it off for the month. That's what I am going to try.

I too am on Verizon now coming off an ATT iPad and 3G plan.

I purchased a data plan on the new iPad, cancelled the plan "later" and it shut off auto renew just like on ATT.

BUT I just purchased my next month and when I go to cancel the auto renew on this month it only offers me the "Cancel Plan Now" option. I assume this means the "do not autorenew" stays in effect across plan purchases? ATT did not work this way, you needed to cancel the autorenew each time you purchased a new plan.

Am I correct in my thinking?

As long as only "delete account now" is offered, autorenew is OFF ?

Thanks in advance,

James

Well, this activation issue is a real problem...at least it was for me until I decided to do and 'end' run. I bought a new iPad3 and was having issues with connectivity so I called Apple. They agreed the new iPad3 was on the fritz so they sent me a new one and I returned the defective one. (Deal with Apple directly on this issue because others may give you a refurbished one and we all know how that might turn out!)

I was very happy! My new iPad3 ran fast and was a dream right up until the point that I tried to connect to cellular service. Just read all of the previous posts and you will see what I mean. After spending too much time with Verizon trying to fix this issue (90 minutes just last night), I told them to cancel my cellular plan at which time they told me that doing so would fry my SIM card!!! I have discovered after reading some blogs that if you deactivate the prepaid plan like they say you can, after a time, the SIM is fried. How about that?!

I just happened to have my original iPad2 that I had passed down to my DH and had NEVER had a problem with using and stopping prepaid service. I just grabbed that up, keyed in my information, and I am up and running like a champ! So, when I want to travel with cellular, I just make sure I grab the older iPad2 and off I go. TaDa!!!

Obviously there are some serious bugs in this new iPad3 regarding connectivity, and I certainly don't like the way Verizon is handling the prepaid situation. IMO, I am buying something expecting the same service and not getting it. It strikes me as a money grab. Just MHO.

Hi,

I am new to this iPad. I just bought the NEW iPad with Verizon. I bought the Data Recurring. I am not clear if it will automatically renew or everytime I used up all the data I will have to renew it. Verizon recorded the Card number etc but not the CVV number (3digit on the back of your card). I was trying to do something to the information and it asked for te CVV. Correct me if I'm wrong. They cannot autorenew it unless you allow or give the CVV, right?

Thanks,

Jhan

I have called the Verizon customer support and asked about this matter...

She said when you do not want to be charge automatically or autorenew below are the steps.

1.) Settings > Cellular Data > View Account > Login Username & Password

2.) Add Data or Change Plan > Cancel Plan > Choose "DELETE ACCOUNT LATER"

This will only STOP the AUTO RENEW but will not delete your account. DO NOT choose the DELE ACCOUNT NOW as it will fry your sim card and will not be able to use it again and you will have to buy NEW SIM CARD. Keep in mind that after 5 months of not using the Verizon Account it will automatically delete your account.

Sadly, if you had looked at the previously posted screenshot (identical to what I am seeing on my iPad 3), you'd notice that the "DELETE ACCOUNT LATER" selection you refer to does not exist. So, we're back to square one: how do you stop your Verizon data plan from renewing, while preserving the ability to "turn it on" later when you need it (perhaps in 3-6 months)?
