Download a file to my iPad from email and view it outside the mail app

Is is possible to email a file, open it on the iPad, download the file to the iPad to view and or listen to outside of the email program in the iPad.
Second, can I send a M4A file to my iPad via email, download it to the iPad and then listen to it in the iPod/iTunes app?

Yes, you can download an email attachment outside of the Mail app. However, you need an app(s) to do that. One good general purposes app is GoodReader. When you tap and hold on an email attachment you will be offered different apps in which to open an attachment. The number depends up the apps you have.
I looked briefly and could not find an app that can play m4a files.

It looks like the answer to Wireman's question (and mine is the same) is no. You cannot separate the attachment from the email. True, as long as the email with the attachment is in your inbox, you can tap it and open it. (I open it in PDF Reader.) But as soon as you delete the mail from your inbox, the attached files go with it. Like Wireman, I was hoping to put the attachment on my iPad outside the email program, in iBooks or Library. Looks like it can't be done.

JK - read lllass again. tap the attachment once to download it tap and hold, and the 'open in' box will appear, and you can open it in any app you have on your machine that reads that type of file. The attachment will then be saved withion that app, and you are free to delete the email.

Thanks, pjI123. The problem was PDF Reader. After opening the documents, they got lost. I tried again after your reply, using iBooks. Now they are sitting neatly on the shelf-- J. D. Salinger's uncollected stories 1940-1948. The email is deleted.
