This is probably a dumb question, but I have an iMac so I don't think I have a firewall or anti-virus software (or would it be a firewall associated with my router? Any idea how it would work for us or how I find out if I have a firewall? It keeps saying that the network connection timed out.

I am having the same problem. I have disabled both my windows firewall and my anti-virus program. same problem. I do not know what else to do. any help would be great.

You have to dissable windows defender as well, a quick search on google will walk you thru it. I know this because I had the exact same problem you guys had but it worked perfectly when I finally dissabled windows defender.

So the answer is disable all your internet security! Why does one have to do this just for Apple devices? Why are Apple telling us that to download stuff from them we must open the door to all the hackers in the world? What don't Apple know that every other software distributor does?

Disabling security is only necessary with a few poorly designed or configured apps that can't recognize Apple servers as secure or routinely block necessary ports. The great majority of PCs don't need security disabled when updating/restoring.

It's not up to Apple to design their systems around half- * PC security. It's the other way around....

Listen, I for one can assure you that I do not use 'HALF * programs' or equipment, it is a great insult you say this, to all who spend big bucks to use Apple Ipod's and pay your wages to work for Apple. I know that programers who write these updates are individuals who are very highly intelligent in their field. For them to take nanosecond and provide a little more time to keep all users safe, even the ones who may use your so called 'Half * programs" safe, they still pay good money to use iTunes, Apple products.

Here is a suggestion, make the updates alittle smaller, AND a whole lot less attitude from customer service people we are only asking a question.

i followed the instructions on the apple web page and had success. You must add the following sites to your trusted web sites in your firewall program:

itunes.apple.com
ax.itunes.apple.com
albert.apple.com
gs.apple.com
