MacBook Pro 2011 USB Tethering Cause of Kernal Crash READ

I went back to apple and got a replacement anyway just in case it's a hardware issue. With my new Macbook Pro, I haven't installed any 3rd party software and browsed the internet for 3 days using my regular Wifi at home with no issues at all. Today, I connected my MacBook Pro to my iphone for internet tethering and BAM kernel crash within 5 minutes with standard out-of-the-box software. This is a software/firmware issue and Apple needs to send us all a new update.. In the meantime, if your having this similar issue please post your responses to the following questions lets try to further narrow down this problem:

1)It could be specifically an Iphone tethering issue not all smartphones possibly due to not being the most current iphone software version.
2)Are you using a jailbroken app (MyWi) to tether or the tethering approved and paid for by your service provider? (Does it happen via usb or wifi also?)
3)Is there a way to downgrade a new MacBook Pro O.S.? Maybe this software version is causing it (10.6.6) Might or might not fix the problem, but worth a shot if other MacBooks have this issue?

If we can all post detailed answers to these questions, we might be able to pinpoint exactly what is causing it and also to help apple produce a proper fix.

I'll answer first:

1) Iphone 4 tethering
Iphone version: 4.0.1 (8A306)
2)Tethering thru MyWi v4.52.2 via usb or wifi both crash MBP
3)MBP 2011 - 17'
i7 2.2 GHz / 8 GB RAM
Mac OS X (10.6.6)

MacBook Pro 2011 17', Mac OS X (10.6.6), I7 2.2 GHz / 8 GB RAM

I just trashed the app, did not delete any plists etc., then reinstalled.

Now after a few hours of tethering, no kernel panic! Previously I would have had a KP within seconds of using the internet on a USB tethered connection.

Looks like this is the fix. However, I am not sure why updating to the latest version did not accomplish the same thing, as the updater seems to download a complete version of iTunes each time it updates.

I have this issue too with a brand new MacbookPro. I was advised by the Genius bar in Sydney to start my machine in 32bit mode (hold down the numbers 3 & 2 when you press the power button to start). However, a word of warning, this fix does not work when the machine is running on battery power, and the MacBook will crash again.

To reactivate 64bit mode hold down the numbers 6 & 4 when you next start the machine.

Not happy at all with Apple. This is my first Mac and not a good first impression.

Pommy,

This is the fix that we have just been advised about. Update your iPhone to 4.3.3 thru iTunes. Once that is complete do your software update on your Mac: apple icon~software update. Once your Mac is up to date, drag and drop or right click your iTunes app from the app menu to the trash bin, then empty. Once the trash has been emptied, go to www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and download iTunes 10.2.2 and then re-install. So far this has been working and no extra steps needed. This fixes the KP (kernel panic) when USB tethering.

Wow, havent checked this thread in a while, looks like it blew up!

Okay, so last time I checked people were able to charge the iPhone via USB cable if they removed the iPhone from Network settings as an option to connect to. That way at least you could charge your phone and use the WiFi tethering app to tether via WiFi.

Is that still the case? Does that at least still work? Because thats all I was really looking for anyway. While it was nice to not have to turn MiWi on, I dont really mind it too much as long as it works and keeps my phone charged!

Ben_r_,

Are you on Verizon? Is your iPhone a 3GS or 4? So far, this is the fix:

1-Software update on your Mac.

2-Update to 4.3.3 thru iTunes.

3-Move iTunes from the apps folder to the trash.

4-Empty the trash.

5-Download iTunes 10.2.2 from www.apple.com/itunes/download.

6-Re-Install iTunes.

So far, this has corrected the KP while USB tethering.

Sounds good except Im not about to leave my jailbroken 4.1 version. Most of the rumors going around are that AT&T is catching people tethering by using the built in support from iOS 4.2 and up. Fortunately there is nothing I really want from anything 4.1 or up so Im gonna go ahead and stick with what I got. I am fine just having the USB port charge my phone and using MiWi to handle the tethering function. I just wanted to know if that option was causing OSX panics even after the iPhone 4 had been removed from the Network options.

I tried to tether my MBP with my iPhone (via USB port) just yesterday and computer crashed on me, asking to turn it off and then turn it back on.

In case there could be a hardware problem I changed USB but it crashed again. Tried twice in each port with same results. After about 2-5 min of using internet. I specifically was downloading a file, which had no issue once back home on my local Wi-Fi.

I have had no problems using tethering with same iPhone trough Bluetooth. Computer seems fine if charging from USB or syncing.

1) Iphone 4 tethering

Iphone version: 4.2.1 (8C148) GSM

2) Tethering thru ROGERS carrier (Canada)

3) MBP 2011 - 13" (OSX 10.6.6)

  • 2.3GHz dual-core
    Intel Core i5
  • 4GB 1333MHz
  • 320GB 5400-rpm

4) Stock iTunes 10.1.2 (Have not updated, don't know if this can be an issue)
