MacBook Pro 2011 USB Tethering Cause of Kernal Crash READ
I went back to apple and got a replacement anyway just in case it's a hardware issue. With my new Macbook Pro, I haven't installed any 3rd party software and browsed the internet for 3 days using my regular Wifi at home with no issues at all. Today, I connected my MacBook Pro to my iphone for internet tethering and BAM kernel crash within 5 minutes with standard out-of-the-box software. This is a software/firmware issue and Apple needs to send us all a new update.. In the meantime, if your having this similar issue please post your responses to the following questions lets try to further narrow down this problem:
1)It could be specifically an Iphone tethering issue not all smartphones possibly due to not being the most current iphone software version.
2)Are you using a jailbroken app (MyWi) to tether or the tethering approved and paid for by your service provider? (Does it happen via usb or wifi also?)
3)Is there a way to downgrade a new MacBook Pro O.S.? Maybe this software version is causing it (10.6.6) Might or might not fix the problem, but worth a shot if other MacBooks have this issue?
If we can all post detailed answers to these questions, we might be able to pinpoint exactly what is causing it and also to help apple produce a proper fix.
I'll answer first:
1) Iphone 4 tethering
Iphone version: 4.0.1 (8A306)
2)Tethering thru MyWi v4.52.2 via usb or wifi both crash MBP
3)MBP 2011 - 17'
i7 2.2 GHz / 8 GB RAM
Mac OS X (10.6.6)
MacBook Pro 2011 17',
Mac OS X (10.6.6),
I7 2.2 GHz / 8 GB RAM
Same for us on USB tether. I'm trying B/T now, we’ve only just connected via B/T and no issue thus far, will also try WiFi now I've read it works.... Which is the preferred option when considering speed/sync etc??
I'm new to Mac so 1st experience is somewhat questionable. Biggest issue for me I must admit is learning the different interface/system. Otherwise it’s very, very nice, a bit like driving a European car… I love iPhones/iPods too.
MBP 15" (2011)Intel Core i7 (2.0Gb), 4Gb RAM, 500 MB HDD
iOS X (10.6.6)
iPhone4 Ver. 4.2.1 (8C148)
Everything is pretty much fresh out of the wrapper.
My MacBook Pro is 15", i7, and 2.2GHz. The rest is stock.
Both my MBP and iPhone 4 is up to date and I use AT&Ts $20 tethering.
My computers keeps asking me to manually shut it off..
I am gettting frustrated since I pay $20 for this to keep happening so I don't know wether
this is a AT&T issue or an Apple issue.
Same issue here. 2011 15" MacBook Pro. WiFi and Bluetooth tethering work fine. Kernel panic with USB tethering. Appears to be a 2011 MBP issue and not the iPhone.

Yes I have the same problem with USB tethering my iPhone 4 with my 2011 MBP 15" i7 2.2GHz
Both 4.3 updated.
I keep getting the gray curtain of death randomly at a minimum of 1minute intervals of accessing the web. Sometimes it will come far later, like an hour or two... but then sometimes you forget and when you work on something--all information is lost!
Same problem with a 13" MacBook Pro, running 10.6.6 and an iPhone 4 (OS 4.3 (8F190)). At first I thought it was problem with Firefox, then with Flash-Videos in general as it also crashed with Safari running instead of Firefox (usually it crashed while watching something on YouTube). But it might as well be some problem with USB tethering.
Anyway, thanks for the posting, I was already wondering whether my MacBook Pro was defective ...
So far this seems to be a software/firmware issue as we all have the new MBP 2011 and are using USB tethering when the system crashes. Even though the MBP's at my local Apple store would not crash when the Genius tried to duplicate the issue on similar units. But it also could be a hardware issue on a small percentage of units. Not likely sense it seems to be happening in different countries, unless they were all made in the same plant! Lets hope it's just a software issue that will be fixed with the next update.
Once again I had no problems on my MBP 2010 or my MBA 2010, all three connections work with no problems.
FWIW I see the problem periodically on my 2010 i7 2.66Ghz MacBook Pro. Same issue - doesn't happen with anything but USB. It happens enough that I've ceased using USB. I'm running 64bit kernel, btw.
I've had this computer for two days. I had no problems with the computer until this afternoon after I synced my iPhone and configured the USB tethering. My kernel panics have been happening since. Different from the posts I've been reading here, they've been happening despite my phone not being connected via USB (or bluetooth).
My iPhone 4 is not jail-broken and tethering is free from my ISP. I'm running iOS 4.3 (8F190).
I've deleted the networking options for the USB tethering to see if that will prevent the kernel panics...

If I open Tethering on my iPhone (under Network) .. I receive this error message to restart the computer. Please help or create a fix for this bug @Apple..
