MacBook Pro 2011 USB Tethering Cause of Kernal Crash READ

I went back to apple and got a replacement anyway just in case it's a hardware issue. With my new Macbook Pro, I haven't installed any 3rd party software and browsed the internet for 3 days using my regular Wifi at home with no issues at all. Today, I connected my MacBook Pro to my iphone for internet tethering and BAM kernel crash within 5 minutes with standard out-of-the-box software. This is a software/firmware issue and Apple needs to send us all a new update.. In the meantime, if your having this similar issue please post your responses to the following questions lets try to further narrow down this problem:

1)It could be specifically an Iphone tethering issue not all smartphones possibly due to not being the most current iphone software version.
2)Are you using a jailbroken app (MyWi) to tether or the tethering approved and paid for by your service provider? (Does it happen via usb or wifi also?)
3)Is there a way to downgrade a new MacBook Pro O.S.? Maybe this software version is causing it (10.6.6) Might or might not fix the problem, but worth a shot if other MacBooks have this issue?

If we can all post detailed answers to these questions, we might be able to pinpoint exactly what is causing it and also to help apple produce a proper fix.

I'll answer first:

1) Iphone 4 tethering
Iphone version: 4.0.1 (8A306)
2)Tethering thru MyWi v4.52.2 via usb or wifi both crash MBP
3)MBP 2011 - 17'
i7 2.2 GHz / 8 GB RAM
Mac OS X (10.6.6)

MacBook Pro 2011 17', Mac OS X (10.6.6), I7 2.2 GHz / 8 GB RAM

I had provided a feedback to Apple Care that their people must be aware of postings in this Forum and in any forums worldwide - otherwise how would Apple be in the front-line of knowing what went wrong with their hardwares and softwares.

When I called Apple Care, I am surprised how little they know about this crash problem!

BTW we can use Bluetooth or Wifi for tethering but I noticed that some callers couldn't get through...the line seems to be unavailable to callers.

Anyone with this problem of missed calls?

Yes deleting the iPhone from the networks pane will keep the kernel panic from happening but if you turn off the hot spot then you do not have to delete the iPhone out of the networking pane. Remember this will happen every time tethering/hot spot is turned on and there are internet app running, whether you are using it or not. This means mail, itunes and possible even calendar, only if syncing with mobile me, but there is not that much data transferring so it would be while for calendar or idisk to crash the computer.

Thanks for doing this!

I have had this problem for 2 weeks but had not discovered this thread. I called Apple Care numerous times without much help (clearing memory, test under different user, reinstall OS, if nothing works go to Apple store and get replacement). I spent all day monday going to the Apple store to be told that the problem is solved by 10.6.7.

Today I finally got some sense out of Apple CARE! So thanks I owe you for that.

They now admit I need to run in 32 bit for problem not to occur. They have asked me to test it and I have managed to run it for several hours with no problems. They now say they are seeing if the iPhone development team can come up with a solution.

For everyone having trouble with mac book pro crashing while tethering .. HERE IS THE SOLUTION User uploaded file
Its not great but all you have to do is convert to 32 bit!
Its that simple! As you start your machine, hold down the '3' and '2' together at the same time until your machine boots up and is ready. Thats it! It doen't look any different nor does the machine run any differently.
I have had countless crashes with the so called grey wall error while tethering using my usb cable into both an iphone 3 & 4 and since converting to 32 bit each time I start my machine ... no crashes what so ever! ITS EASY, PAINLESS and now i swear a lot less.

IMHO, that is not a solution. That is a 'workaround' to avoid seeing the problem while eliminating capabilities that some 64bit users need. To really be a "solution" it has to fix what's broken in 64 bit mode, not avoid 64 bit mode. When there's really a solution we won't need this discussion topic anymore except to say 'it's fixed in the latest software update'.

Can I ask a dumb question?

Why do we want to boot in 64-bit kernel mode anyway?

I mean, it seems to me that we're having to go out of the way to do something that Apple do not necessarily want us to do by default, and this is just one example of why.

Perhaps I am being dumb or overly simplistic...but why do we want to boot in 64-bit kernel mode?

I see absolutely no difference in performance either way. No difference in boot time that I notice...nothing.

Pardon me if I'm being dumb, but I don't really understand.
