MacBook Pro 2011 USB Tethering Cause of Kernal Crash READ

I went back to apple and got a replacement anyway just in case it's a hardware issue. With my new Macbook Pro, I haven't installed any 3rd party software and browsed the internet for 3 days using my regular Wifi at home with no issues at all. Today, I connected my MacBook Pro to my iphone for internet tethering and BAM kernel crash within 5 minutes with standard out-of-the-box software. This is a software/firmware issue and Apple needs to send us all a new update.. In the meantime, if your having this similar issue please post your responses to the following questions lets try to further narrow down this problem:

1)It could be specifically an Iphone tethering issue not all smartphones possibly due to not being the most current iphone software version.
2)Are you using a jailbroken app (MyWi) to tether or the tethering approved and paid for by your service provider? (Does it happen via usb or wifi also?)
3)Is there a way to downgrade a new MacBook Pro O.S.? Maybe this software version is causing it (10.6.6) Might or might not fix the problem, but worth a shot if other MacBooks have this issue?

If we can all post detailed answers to these questions, we might be able to pinpoint exactly what is causing it and also to help apple produce a proper fix.

I'll answer first:

1) Iphone 4 tethering
Iphone version: 4.0.1 (8A306)
2)Tethering thru MyWi v4.52.2 via usb or wifi both crash MBP
3)MBP 2011 - 17'
i7 2.2 GHz / 8 GB RAM
Mac OS X (10.6.6)

MacBook Pro 2011 17', Mac OS X (10.6.6), I7 2.2 GHz / 8 GB RAM

I find it strange that Apple and its service personnel do not know of the kernal crash and its cause among the many postings in this forum.

Without spending time and effort they could easily provide an update solution immediately by quickly checking out the bug.

I came over from the Windows camp and honestly I had never got any such hangs since my days with Windows XP, not even with some errant softwares or hardwares.

I agree, Apple machines are certainly not what they used to be.. Well not if you bought them for serious work.. I've just bought the new Macbook Pro but after 6 years with Apple i think when this model ages i'll be going back to PC..

It seems all the focus in on iphone and ipad and the notebooks have been forgotten. The support has all but diminished, it makes me feel like i bought an ASUS for 3x the mark-up price... 5star price but 2star support, it's not good enough..

fyi, I have a self-built Asus i7 under my desk and it's the best PC I've ever had. Superfast, silent, flawless, energy efficient. I don't know anything about their premade notebooks, but for desktops I prefer it to any other brand name as long as you are technical enough to build and do most of the support yourself.

Hey all. I'm in the same boat, but I just assume the fix needs to lie with the developers of MyWi. After all, if we are jailbreaking our phones and using a customized jailbroken app in order to get free tethering, why do most of you believe the onus is on the MBP people to fix the issue?

I looked around for some place to complain to MyWi and can't even find a support forum or a way to report bugs for the product.

This is not limited to Jailbroken devices. The kernel panics occur for those with a paid tethering plan on non-Jailbroken devices.

And if you want to contact MyWi for support, email support@intelliborn.com or go to settings/help and support.

Believe or not mate there is a world outside of America where our phone carriers actually let is tether with no jailbreaking or apps needed (namely all of Asia and most of Europe). I think they call it "TRUE" unlimited and not the fake unlimited sold to Americans where they prefer you to pay twice..

My phone is not jailbroken and i don't even know what Mywi is... This is definitely an Apple problem because it affects everyone not just the tiny community of jailbreakers..

Let me state clearly, this is not a MyWi problem. It's a 2011 MBP problem because it tethers fine with my phone carrier on my older late 2008 Macbook Pro with a factory stock phone here in Asia.

Come on folks, this isn't windoze... Apple doesn't release a ton of updates and patches for the Mac OS each week! How annoying would that be if Software Update nagged you every time you sat down at your computer? Enough complaining. _This forum is for discussion and solutions._ This is not for us to address Jailbroken or other unrecommended/unauthorized use of Apple hardware or software. It's a way for us to share experience and resolutions with one another. What a great way for Apple to further expand it's product support beyond Apple Phone Support!

Of course a thread this size has gotten into the right hands at Apple. Don't get bent out of shape if the human you talk to at Apple Support isn't immediately aware of this issue. This is not the only thing people call them about. When you call Apple Support you are talking to a regular person with basic know how and training based in a call center. You are not speaking with an advanced systems engineer!

*Temporary Solution (while we wait for Apple to address the issue):*
*Boot in 32-bit mode if you need to tether via USB.*

Please post if you are experiencing the issue. Let us know if you have any other normal circumstances surrounding the issue. Please post any other resolutions that may help the group. Please post as soon as anyone has discovered Apple has released the update that addresses USB tethering in 64-bit mode.

Please do not reply to this post if you intend to complain about Apple, my new MacBook Pro, or ME! Maybe some of you should get a Windows laptop if you don't like Apple. Good luck there! I'm sure you can even find a forum for that out there to share your thoughts on that. I'm staying put.

Any useful, helpful, informative posts welcome!
