Snow Leopard and Windows 7 networking - Can't see in Finder

I have 6 Mac Pros all networked, and have just added 2 Windows 7 Ultimate computers. I have gone through the setup on all machines so that I SHOULD be able to see the Windows 7 machine in the finder, but I cannot. I have a folder on one of the Windows 7 machines that I have shared with "Everyone", but still no dice. I have a Windows XP machine that I hooked up and it shows up fine in the finder automatically. The Windows 7 machines however do not. Can anyone shed some light on what I might be missing? Thanks in advance.

First - you do have file sharing turned on.?...if so, under options, you have smb and afp enabled?

Also, are you using wireless..or..ethernet or combined?

Have you tried on the finder menu - to go => connect to server => and manually try connecting to the windows machines using - smb:\\<windows 7 ip address>?

Also, check to make sure your Workgroups on both the mac and windows machines are set correctly. On the mac - you can check in System Preferences => Internet and Wireless => Network => Advanced =>Wins.

Thanks for your reply. I definitely have file sharing with SMB and AFP enabled. This setup is through an Apple Airport Extreme over ethernet. I meant to mention that I CAN connect by going to Go / Connect to server / and putting in the IP address. This is just quite a few steps. Like I said in the original post, the Windows XP machine that I hook up is seen in the finder by all of the Mac Pros.

Maybe I am misunderstood what your issue is? You mentioned you couldn't see the Windows 7 under shared in finder - if you do the connect with server - you should see them listed under finder. Also, in response to anyone else having a remedy for this - the link I provided, sounded like an issue someone else had that was similar to yours? Did you read it?

I am curious to see how this issue is resolved?

Thanks for confirming that Rodney -

After you re-booted your machines - leaving the Windows 7 for last, you can check the status of the MB, by doing the following:

In Terminal - nmblookup -M-- -. (notice the 3 dashes followed by a period) you should see

querying _MSBROWSE_ on 10.0.1.255
10.0.1.6 _MSBROWSE_<01>

or...by going to the pc and typing - net view - and after listing your computers..you can go through each one by typing

nbtstat - a <computer name>

and look for the one with the .. msbrowse. entry.

I would do it from the mac - as its easier

To clarify, I cannot see the Windows 7 machines in the finder WITHOUT using "Connect to Server", whereas the Windows XP machine just shows up in the browser when it boots. Basically, there are a couple of steps that I have to do in order to get connected to the Windows 7 machines as opposed to the Xp machine just showing up. At the end of the day, its not a massive deal, but it would be nice for the Windows 7 machines to appear in the finder just as the XP machine does. Thanks for your reply.

I will try the reboot options, but I am almost certain that I tried this yesterday in making sure the Macs were up and running before any of the Windows 7 machines were turned on.

I just bought the new macbook pro this Monday and I had to transfer huge amount of files from my Win7 laptop. I was able to share my Win7 c:/ d:/ and "User" drives on the sharing network. It's pretty easy if you follow this tutorial on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSm0YflelJ4

In summary
On Win7:
- join a Workgroup if you haven't; if you're already part of Homegroup, turn file sharing on
- go to the files or drives you want to share with then right-click. Go to >share with >specific person>
- Set up an account for "Guest", and add privileges

On Mac OSx (mine's Snow Leopard 10.6.6)
- Go to finder, on the window type cmd+K or right-click to finder and click "Connect to Server" (both are the same)
- type in smb://[pc name]/user
- Connect

If you want to connect to other files or drives on Win7, just allow sharing with "Guest" by adding privileges, you do the same for Mac with Network Sharing.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. As I said in an earlier post, I am able to connect the way you describe, but I thought that after sharing the drive on the Windows 7 machine that it would just show up in Finder on the Mac under shared just as the Windows XP machine does. It seems like there would be a setting that would allow it to show up on the Mac without having to use the "Connect to Server" command. Thanks again for your help.
