ipod touch will not power on

I got my ipod at Christmas but have not used it until now. It has powered on a few times in the past but today, nothing but a black screen. I have plugged it in to charge, tried pressing Hold + Home for minutes on end and even restore by pressing Home while plugging in. iTunes does not recognize it when I plug in. Any advice?
