New iPad 2 LOCKED to ATT or Verizon

I talked to an Apple technician at 1800-SOS-APPL and the rep clear stated
that the new iPad 2 is locked to ATT or Verizon, and that changing the SIM card
will not allow it to work with other carriers.

They're not locked in the sense of a cell phone being locked.... But they operate on different technologies and can't be interchanges with each other. But the "AT&T" iPad (i.e. the GSM iPad) can have it's SIM card excgphanged with any GSM network worldwide. The "Verizon" (CDMA) iPad could likewise be used on any CDMA network, but I don't believe there are any outside of Verizon and a few of their affiliates/subsidiaries in parts of the US .... At one point I believe CDMA networks were prevalent in Korea and/or Japan, but not anymore?

I have the same issue, I bougth an iPad 2 3G Verizon. I want to activate it on a mexican carrier which uses CDMA technology. In matter of fact, Verizon is a shareholder of my carrier. Is there any way I may configure my iPad so it starts looking for my carrier instead of Verizon and stop displaying "roaming" on my screen?
Also, I went to activate it here, but their system displayed "Invalid ESN".

I am coming to Hawaii for a few months. I plan on buying an new replacement for my Mac Book Pro and a new 2nd gen iPad with wi fi & 3g.at the same time. I do not care if I have Verizon or ATT while I an in Hawaii. I will be going to Europe and Asia before returning to Australia. Can I have the iPad configured to accept a micro sim that will allow me to change carriers depending on where I am in the world rather than pay exhorbitant roaming rates.
In the latter part of the year I will be returning to Australia probably permanently. I will then get an Aussie carrier like Optus, Vodafone or Telstra if I can.
My query is while I can use my MBP anywhere in the world, does the iPad 3G limit me to where ever I buy it for normal 3 G carrier service rather than a roaming service ?
Does the video capability play Quicktime, or only MP4 formatted videos ?

I'm assuming that the Aussie carriers are all GSM - that being the case, the GSM iPad (i.e. the AT&T one) should work back in Australia.

You'd have to either get a SIM card in each country you visit, pay the roaming rates to use your native SIM card in other countries, or restrict yourself to just WiFi when abroad. You can't "configure" it to work in different countries, from what i understand, but you can just take out and replace the SIM card as you travel.

Not sure about the video capability - there are several threads devoted to that question throughout the forum, I'd do a search first and if that doesn't help you start a new question rather than piggyback it onto this one.

I have ordered the ipad and says that delivery will be in 2-3 weeks....my question: is it possible to get it in 2 weeks or probably will be 3 weeks??

There is no way anyone here could answer that for you. There are a number of threads in which people are posting their updates. You may want to peruse them.

Based on current events, popularity of the product and phases of the moon, I'd guess later rather than sooner. But that's just my guess. There really isn't anything you can do but check the status periodically and hope for the best.
