DVD formatted for regions 1 and/or 2

I have a discs that apparently is formatted for region 2. When I install it, I get a panel asking me to change from region 1 to region 2. If I refuse, it kicks out the disc. If I accept, it plays the disc and does so perfectly. However, I have a huge problem....

I have been told by an apple rep that I can alter the regions on my iMac only 5 times and after the 5th time, the machine stays locked on whatever it's set on and cannot be changed. Somehow, it doesn't seem to make sense to limit it to 5 times since it serves no useful purpose to have a computer restrict itself in such a manner when it involves an important function. Also, it seems to me it would be just as easy to permit it unlimited abilities to switch region formats as it would be to force it to lock up after the 5th shift.

My question is: is this true? Does the computer really restrain itself in such a limited fashion?
(I have a 21.5-inch iMac recently purchased running system 10.6.6)

This is standard behaviour on the vast majority of DVD players both standalone and built in drives. commercial DVDs are usually region coded to make the movement of DVDs from one region of the world to another less attractive. I would strongly recommend against trying to find ways to circumvent the region locking on your iMac. If you have a large collection of DVDs from several regions, a multi region DVD player to connect to your TV is relatively easy to find and inexpensive to buy and will let you watch DVDs from any region.
