Q: iPad Is 16GB large enough ?.

Considering iPad Wi-Fi 16Gb and wondering if it's large enough.
*Question. Is the 16GB completely free available for Apps or does the OS require part of the 16Gb.*

iPad 16GB, iOS 4, HP Desktop. Windows 7

You wont have exactly 16GB available. I'm not sure of the exact figure but it's probably around the 14 GB Mark. Whether this is enough will depend on the usage you intend. Mine is almost exclusively used at home and I stream a lot of thing from iTunes so don't actually use a lot of on board storage so for me I went for the 16GB and the money saved pays for apps, movies etc to use with it. If you are out and about you are going to want to store a lot more onboard. The following thread covers the same topic and you might find it useful.

    Hope that helps.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Just phoned an Apple Store (Cambridge UK) They thought OS took 2Gb, so your answer appears correct.
Also thank you for the link.

Not in my view. Throw a bunch of HQ movies on there, a decent music collection, plus photos and apps, and you're full. Esp for travel (unless you also plan to take a computer), you're better off spending and extra $100 for 32GB (that's what I wanted, but it was sold out so I bought a 64). Usable space on the 64 is really about 60GB. Note there are some HD apps that are in the hundreds of megs.

Leave the minimum 16gb option to your phones.. tablets naturally should have more storage. And dont forget iPad apps are generally larger than iPhone apps.

You don't get 16GB completely free, unfortunately. The OS and the pre-loaded Apps do take up space so if you're got exactly 16GB of music / videos to sync, you'll have to make a few cuts :P

Personally, I didn't have too much trouble filling up an 8GB iPod Touch 2G. However, I was one to delete Apps when I was done with them / found them useless. I never let them linger and take up space on my iPod.

If you're one who likes to download a lot of Apps and has an extensive music library you should look into a 32GB. I was very conservative with my usage - mostly because 8GB was all I thought I would need. If I could do it again, I'd have gotten a 16GB.

Considering many of the apps for iPad in the high 100's mb (iBird Pro HD is 1010MB, which is 1GB basically, but that's if you like birds, like I do hehheh), and depending on what you are actually going to put on it (I do not put music on it as I use Audio Galaxy to stream my music from my computer from anywhere I am at with wifi, and there are video stream apps too, but I admit I have about 21 movies on my iPad) but in apps alone I think I am using most of the storage on the 64GB version of the iPad. I am really at a loss why Apple didn't increase the storage on the iPad, especially since many of the apps are so large, people will want movies and music on their device, and people may even want to read ebooks, like I do. With other devices out there, like the Android tablets, they include an SD slot where you can increase storage. Don't know why Apple is so behind on technology and still has not implemented SD storage (if only for photos, books and music at the very least). Perhaps in the iPad 3? Who knows?

Depends on how you use it. If you store a lot of music and movies on it then probably not.

Personally have never come close to filling it. Can stream everything.

    ME TOO !!!!! I don't know which to select , 16 or 32 ? !

My interest is in using the ipad to take video ..lots of shorts ones. Birthday and holiday parties, school recitals, lots of my dogs doing fun stuff, my granddaughter dancing, singing, etc. About how many hours of home video recording can I expect from a 16? ...I  imagine I would be wanting approx. 50 videos @  5-10 minutes each.  and possibly 500 pictures. I'm not much of a movie person...so that is not much of a concern to me.

    Thanks !!!

I think if you're going to take a lot of video or photos you have to go at least 32gb, but maybe even 64gb.  There are a lot of opinions out there, but there is not way you're going to be happy with 16gb!
