Choice: Auto connect to unknown WiFi -or-Get unwanted messages every time

Here's what I would like to happen (iPhone OS 4):
1) Connect to my home & known wifi networks automatically (this happens)
2) DON'T connect to any other networks unless I go to Settings > Wifi and choose one I want (this isn't an option)
3) DON'T keep telling me about every goddam network in the street every time I get my phone out to use email / safari.

I know I can prevent the available network messages by having "Ask to join networks" off - but then I'm joining every unsecured network in town as I walk around - this is insane. I don't want to be opening up my email and password to snoopers on every unsecured network in town as I travel around. I want to use my cellular network providers data - that's what I'm paying them for.

But when I'm at home I want to automatically join my home wifi network. The rest of the time, don't keep hassling me about every network in the street. Don't join unsecured networks without me even knowing about it. Godammn bonkers.

The only way around this is to turn off wifi every time I leave the house. This is bonkers.

Any reason you can't just leave "Ask to Join Networks" on? Your phone is only going to bug you if it is actually on. If it is in standby, it isn't going to bug you. I guess your alternative is to turn WiFi off - you will certainly use your cellular network then.

BTW, you aren't necessarily at particularly high risk when connected to an open network so you might want dial back the paranoia a bit and enjoy your phone. You can connect to an open network, use VPN, and be highly secure. Another alternative is to use web based email which uses the HTTPS secure protocols - unlikely to hacked as well.

I agree more control over WiFi networks would be nice. I have a WiFi router at home, but it has a data limit, the phone has unlimited. So when I am at home I only want to connect to my WiFi when I want to, not just because the phone found it. Now other places, yes I want to connect to free WiFi. But, as I drive down the road I don't need to get the pop up showing every WiFi in the area every time I slow down or stop at a red light. Would be nice to actually identify "known" networks and assign a connection option to them.

Uhh that is what the iPhone does. It does not auto connect just to any wifi unless you previously connected to it. It wont connect to any network regardless of that option.

What could be your issue is your SSID is a generic default, for example you have your wifi network named linksys, belkin, apple, etc.

So I am betting your wifI network is a default name and when you go somewhere someone else has that name. You should also be using wifi security or your anyone can use your Internet if they are in range. Also if you connect to a wifi network and don't want to auto connect to it again you must select that network by pressing the blue arrow and selecting forget this network.

The iPhone checks the network and connects to your known list of networks, it does this by using the SSID. What you need to do is go into your router configuration page and change your SSID, then do the following:

Here is what u need to do to fix this problem. Go to settings > general > reset > network settings
Wait for it to reset and reboot your phone. Then reconnect to your wifi and make sure ask to join networks is off.

Not correct. I had a meeting for several hours in a hotel recently and when I went to use my phone I noticed that it had connected to the hotel Wifi network (which was unsecured). As my mail checks every 15 mins that means it was being downloaded on their network, which not what I want. Could this happen in an area with poor cellular connection / no service? There was some service when I went to use my phone but maybe it was a weak signal and had disconnected whilst I wasn't using it?

I've never been to the hotel before and didn't have an iPhone the last time I was in that town, so I've definitedly never logged onto that network and it wasn't a generic SSID - it was the hotel name and I've never logged onto another SSID with that hotel name.

That is when I switched "ask to join networks" on and hence the irritating messages every time I unlock my phone and use safari / mail.

I think the current method needs to be reversed in approach so that I have to go to settings to join an unknown network manually (which I do once in a blue moon), rather than the iPhone telling me about every network in the vacinity every single time I go to use mail / safari. I'm quite fine using the cellular data connection, but I do want to automatically connect to my home Wifi.

I have ask to join networks off. I only use my home wifi and there are tons of open wifi networks and never has my iPhone connected to any of them even when I am not in range of my own.

So please follow my instructions to reset your network settings on the phone and make sure ask to join networks is off.

It shouldn't be doing that, if it still is after resetting the network settings, then your preferences could be corrupted and you need to do a restore and setup as a new iPhone, not from a backup because it will likely have that issue.

If your jailbroken it could be caused by a mod installed.

But please reset your network settings and reply back.

Thanks for your reply. I have reset the network settings as per your instructions. Only time will tell whether that has fixed it, the incident I described was the only occurance I was aware of (kinda hard to check this when the phone's in your pocket!). What about the scenario where there are unsecured networks available but there is no cellular service? Would it connect automatically then?

I still think that the logic of the OS is back to front. For instance, if I want to use an unsecured public hotspot and I first turn on VPN for security, what happens next time I'm in the vicinity of that hotspot? Presumably it will auto-connect but without the VPN because I'm not aware that it's connecting when it's in my pocket.

For the handful of times I want to use public networks it'd be far more convenient to have to got to settings and chose to connect than have these messages popping up every time I unlock my phone. Or the other equally unappealing option of auto-connecting to a network I used once but don't necessarily want to use every time I walk past it.

No the iPhone should never automatically connect to a network unless it was connected it before.

So with ask to join networks off, it will not bug you nor will it auto connect to a unknown wifi, it will auto connect to previously connected networks. So since you reset your wifi settings it should only allow your home wifi.

Having no cell data doesn't matter, it wont connect to a network unless it been connected to it before. So as long as your home wifi SSID is unique you shouldn't run into any accidental connections either.

Oh so that's your issue you are connecting to these networks but the next time you are in the area you don't want it to auto connect? Only way to prevent that is before leaving that area, you must go to the wifi settings and press the blue arrow and press forget this network, if you don't it will auto connect.

Your post didn't make this clear it seemed like your phone was just connecting to wifi networks you never connected to.

No, sorry for confusing the issue. I had never connected to the hotel network that I mentioned in the earlier post. I didn't have my iPhone the last time I was in that town. This is the issue - automatically connecting to unsecured networks without my knowledge.

Following on from your responses, I also concluded that the situation I mentioned - where I use a VPN for public networks but not the rest of the time - is a flaw in the OS logic. I maintain that it is far more convenient to go to >settings to connect to a unsecured network every time rather than to be either - prompted about every network in your vicinity when you are out (because you have "Ask to join networks" turned on) - or automatically reconnecting to a unsecured public network without VPN just because once upon a time you used it with VPN.
