Field rendering - why?

When you go to output an mov from MOTION 4 what is the option to check called Field Rendering and when should one have it on/checked?

Mac PRO 3.0 GHZ, 12 GB RAM, Mac OS X (10.6.6), FC Studio 3

Only needed for Interlaced footage export.

thanks very much - so if I have been checking that option even for progressive or 24 fps Motion files, is there any detriment to the quality of that export if I chose Field rendering for it?

I turn off Field Rendering unless the project is interlaced.
